Chapter 160 - Chapter 160: In War, There Is No Right or Wrong, Only Strength
At dawn the next day, all the Konoha shinobi stationed at the outpost gathered together.
"Lord Jiraiya, everyone is assembled," Tsuchiki reported.
Jiraiya nodded and stepped to the front of the group. With Danzo absent, it was now his responsibility to give the pre-battle speech. When they had left the village, Danzo had been appointed the supreme commander of this operation, with Jiraiya serving as his assistant. However, with Danzo missing, Jiraiya now held the highest authority here.
Without that official status, the clan leaders among the assembled shinobi would never have obeyed his command to attack Tetsuishi Town yesterday. If Jiraiya had given orders without an official position, and the attack resulted in severe consequences, Konoha would hold those who followed him accountable. But since he held an official command role, any repercussions would fall solely on him, leaving the others blameless.
Jiraiya took a deep breath before addressing the crowd.
"Everyone, Tetsuishi Town is crucial to our village. No matter the cost, we must take it. As shinobi, it is our sacred duty to safeguard the interests of Konoha. Now, the village needs us. This is our moment of trial, and we must not let Konoha down!"
He paused, letting his words settle.
"If we succeed in seizing Tetsuishi Town, we will return home as heroes, respected and revered! For the village—and for ourselves—we must claim victory!"
Jiraiya's voice rose in intensity. "How many times in life do we get a chance to truly fight for something? If not now, then when? Tell me, do you have the confidence to take Tetsuishi Town?!"
"Yes!" the Konoha shinobi roared in unison, their voices thundering like a storm, shaking the air with determination.
Jiraiya had delivered a powerful speech. The morale of the troops was soaring.
"Then let's go! Let the shinobi of the Land of Rain witness the might of Konoha! Let them understand that opposing us is nothing but an act of futility, a path to their own destruction!" Jiraiya commanded before leading the troops toward Tetsuishi Town.
...
"Captain Ryūgen, Konoha's forces have assembled and are advancing toward us. Danzo has not appeared. The leader is Jiraiya, Hiruzen Sarutobi's disciple," a jonin reported.
Konoha's movements were too large to escape the notice of the Rain shinobi.
"Danzo is missing?" Ryūgen frowned slightly.
Danzo was a well-known figure in the shinobi world. His sudden disappearance added an invisible weight to the Land of Rain's forces. Ryūgen couldn't help but suspect that Danzo was scheming something in the shadows, a hidden strategy that could pose a threat to Tetsuishi Town.
But after a moment's thought, he shook his head.
"No point dwelling on Danzo's whereabouts. Order all patrol units to return to the town and prepare for battle."
They couldn't afford to leave Tetsuishi Town undefended just to investigate Danzo. Wasting energy on that would only distract them from the imminent battle.
The jonin quickly relayed the orders, bringing all patrol units back inside the town's defenses. Leaving them outside now would be pointless given the scale of Konoha's offensive.
Ryūgen watched as young shinobi took their positions along the town walls. Many were civilians who had risen to become shinobi, as prominent clans rarely sent their own to defend such dangerous locations. With the Land of Rain waging war against three major nations simultaneously, the leadership also had to keep a strong force within Amegakure to prevent a direct invasion.
"Are you afraid of the Konoha shinobi?" Ryūgen asked the younger fighters with a smile.
There was a brief silence before one of them stepped forward.
"Captain Ryūgen, I won't lie. Konoha is the strongest village in the shinobi world. Their shinobi are powerful, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't afraid. But for the sake of our village, I will not take a single step back—even if they are stronger."
Standing atop the walls, staring at the approaching Konoha forces, many of the young shinobi showed signs of nervousness. Fear flickered in their eyes.
Konoha had long been regarded as the most powerful shinobi village. It was only natural for them to be feared.
But the fear was fleeting.
Within moments, their gazes hardened with resolve. Behind them lay their home, their families, everything they sought to protect. No matter how strong the enemy was, they had no choice but to stand and fight. Retreat was not an option.
If they faltered, if they let fear consume them, then the Land of Rain would have no future.
Observing their determination, Ryūgen let out a satisfied smile. Taking Tetsuishi Town would not be easy for Konoha.
A firm will could compensate for disparities in raw power.
Then, a young chunin gathered his courage and asked, "Captain Ryūgen, are you afraid of Konoha shinobi?"
Ryūgen laughed heartily. "Of course, I am! Our opponents are elite Konoha shinobi. A single mistake could cost me my life. But when you think about it, there's no reason to fear them."
He looked out at the enemy forces. "Konoha shinobi are just like us. If they get hit by a jutsu, if a kunai slashes their throats or pierces their hearts, they die just the same."
His voice grew heavier. "Besides, we don't have a choice. We must fight them here. Behind us are our loved ones, the people we want to protect. If we retreat, if we lose, they will fall into Konoha's hands, subjected to suffering and humiliation."
His words rang out like a battle cry. "So, no matter what happens, we cannot take a single step back—even if it means giving our lives!"
"Captain Ryūgen is right!" one of the shinobi shouted. "Konoha shinobi are flesh and blood, just like us! If we strike true, they will die all the same! There is no reason to fear them! They seek to invade our land, but we will make them regret their foolishness!"
Another shinobi added, "Konoha is known as the strongest village, but if we defeat them here, we will prove our own strength! We will make the world fear Amegakure!"
Standing atop the walls, the shinobi of the Land of Rain roared their battle cries, their voices echoing across the battlefield, their morale unshaken.
The battle for Tetsuishi Town was about to begin.
