Myths Reawakened-Chapter 218 (1): It Is What It Is. Let’s Eat First!
“Oh no, Wayne’s eaten!”
From the back of the flying giant eagle, Veronica was at a great vantage point to see the scumbag swallowed by the giant fly. White scales emerged from her arms and face, and she jumped to go to his rescue.
Auston reached out and grabbed her collar, lifting her back to her seat.
She was visibly shocked. She never knew that her father was so physically strong. The two bastards were both keeping secrets!
“Don’t worry about him. The fly is only Gluttony’s vessel in the human world rather than the actual demon lord. It may not be the one eaten in this case,” Auston said without a hint of nervousness. When he noted how anxious his daughter was, he grew envious.
“You and I are still able to defend against the divine power radiating from the vessels rather than falling under the influence of their desires, which means that his thoughts remain, and he’s only pretending to be eaten.”
Veronica frowned slightly. “Why are his thoughts capable of neutralizing the demon lords’ vessels, even influencing me... and you?”
She hadn’t been reading Wayne’s diary for nothing. She trusted that Wayne would protect her, but definitely not Auston, which meant that Auston had managed to shield himself from the temptation of the vessels on his own.
Somehow, she had a feeling that the two generations of scumbags were each able to make quick work of the demons, and they were only chased around because they were wary of each other, not wanting to show their trump cards first.
One plus one equaled zero. As expected of two men from the Lando family, they weren’t dependable at all.
Auston knew Silvia well, which meant he also knew Veronica quite well. He could tell from her expression what she was thinking, so he went against his instinct and talked Trash Jr. up, “I’m not testing Wayne, and he’s not testing me, either. We’re only holding back because another enemy remains in hiding. Compared to the vessels, the person knows the Lando family better and poses a greater threat.”
A trump card had to remain concealed since the mystery was what intimidated people; once the mystery was lost, it would no longer be a hidden ace.
Auston believed that his card was stronger than Wayne’s, so he had been waiting for Wayne to make a move first. Moreover, he simply couldn’t reveal his secret, or the family would more or less break apart.
Veronica scowled. “You’re so similar... Is he really not your son?”
“No. The rumor—” Auston paused, correcting himself. “Since you’ve realized it, Veronica, I’ll be honest with you. That’s right. Wayne Lando is your half-brother born from the same father.”
“Liar.”
Veronica punched him in the face hard, even grinding her fist against him. Auston covered his nose, despairing at his failed plan and the fact that his daughter was already too far gone.
Below, the projections Auston had summoned each fulfilled their duties and subdued the demon lords’ vessels in pairs. The Nature Knight and the Darkness Knight, his aces, were far stronger than the other knights. The Nature Knight, especially, was powerful enough to take on Caim alone, only she wasn’t a legendary mage and thus couldn’t use vitality field.
It was the same for Caim. His power came from the Lord of Night’s blessings, allowing him to rival a legendary mage. He would have a fifty percent chance of winning even if a legendary mage dragged him into their vitality field.
Neither followed the orthodox evolution route. One was a magical creature, and the other was not much different. The same could be said about the other vessels for the demon lords. They varied in different ways, but none of them was normal.
Still in hiding, the mysterious man agonized over whether he should show himself and force Auston and Wayne to reveal their secret weapons. After a moment, he chose not to.
What if the secret weapons were so powerful that the mysterious man couldn’t win?
Just then, the mysterious man sensed a disturbance in the space around them. He shook his head and sighed, commanding Caim to retreat.
The demon lords’ vessels and the Astral Egg were expendable, nothing to cry over after they were spent. Caim was different. A tool this useful should be used until broken to maximize its value.
Growl—
Flapping his wings, Caim took flight and dodged the Nature Knight’s pursuing strikes, his body becoming translucent. He accelerated to his limit and dashed toward the edge of the hellish territory in the shape of an inverted pentagram.
Auston narrowed his eyes. They glinted with black light, and the Darkness Knight emerged from the shadow at the edge of the world. His black cape connected to the boundless darkness and forcefully converted the surrounding space into his own domain.
Caim’s translucent avian form clashed into the thick darkness. His incorporeal body met a substantial reality—no, it was an even more incorporeal being.
Countless black chains swept toward him from all directions, grappling his serpentine neck and wings. No matter how Caim struggled, he could not escape.
The mysterious figure cursed. Auston’s two aces each specialized in offense and defense. The Nature Knight had incredible offensive power, while the Darkness Knight was unrivaled in defense. If they didn’t make a move now, they would lose their best employee.
Thankfully, he had come prepared.
The Book of Hell sewn into Caim’s body slowly opened, triggering the Divine Comedy of the Seven Deadly Sins written on it. It gave Caim a powerful buff by exhausting his vitality.
The familiar entered the second phase.
Caim cried out in pain as another pair of black wings grew out of his back, and then two other avian heads with serpentine necks emerged. The hellish bird evolved into its ultimate form. As he took flight, his raw power broke the chains binding him. The Darkness Knight remained where he was, raising his hands to send darkness sweeping toward the strange bird.
Caim didn’t intend to stay. Speed was his strong suit, and leveraging it, he flew to the center of the battlefield, slamming against the spatial rampart from another direction.
Auston was just about to react when the giant fly that embodied the Lord of Gluttony stood in Caim’s way. Ever since it swallowed Wayne, it had been rampaging about like a headless fly, and when it saw the enemy running away, it finally recovered its brain.
Caim roared, conjuring black storms around him. His four wings grew to an incredible span of four hundred meters, deflecting the giant fly at collision.
When it seemed like nothing would stop the strange bird, the pale tree below started squirming. The twisted trunk shrank down like time was being reversed, retracing its step back through the succubus’s nine orifices and refilling her chest and abdomen. Her bulging torso made it look like she was pregnant.
She looked up at the shadow in the sky with her white eyes. Suddenly, she opened her mouth, and a pair of white hands reached out. A featureless figure stretched her mouth further to crawl out of her. Its large eyeball locked onto the target, and the white foam that comprised its body expanded dramatically until the figure turned into a giant sword, piercing into the sky.
The fierce blade hit the four-winged bird monster squarely in the chest and didn’t stop until it protruded through Caim’s body by a hundred meters, ignoring the metal wings’ robust defense.
Far down below, the succubus bent backward on her knees, her arms dropping down to prop herself up as she spat out a white blade that was far bigger than she was.
Her abdomen was now flat. Her red lips were stretched so wide that they became deformed, and her originally alluring features were contorted. Webs of veins bulged under her skin. She couldn’t be further from beautiful in this state.
The strange bird flapped its four wings, screaming and failing to escape the blade pinning it down.
As Caim’s form was turning incorporeal, the giant fly flew over and opened the spiral maw in its chest, spitting out another sharp blade of white foam to pierce through the bird, striking a second critical blow.
From where the perpendicular blades pierced through the demon familiar, white foam wriggled and poured into Caim’s blood vessels like liquid, corrupting the flesh and blood to widen the sphere of influence.
A basic evolution could not influence a more advanced one; conversely, a higher lifeform could corrupt a lower lifeform.
Based on his experience of corrupting Filomina, Wayne had developed this new attack—no, it wasn’t an attack. He called it a blessing since he was facilitating the target’s evolution. It wasn’t his problem if his target could not take it.
Caim’s cries of pain faded gradually. White foam filled the two open wounds put in his body. From the outside, the wounds were unnoticeable, no different from a needle prick compared to his large size, but inside, the white foam had devoured and assimilated Caim’s blood cells and muscle tissues, multiplying like cancer cells and taking over the body. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
The takeover was clear in the way the center of Caim’s body was unable to become translucent. He had lost control over a part of his body, and it deprived him of his mobility like shackles.
Sensing the change happening to Caim, the mysterious man was at first stunned, followed by the ecstasy of discovering uncharted territory. He gulped at Wayne and couldn’t stop salivating.
A precious research material—no, a top-tier material!
Although the mysterious figure followed the Lord of Pride, they wouldn’t mind studying such a lifeform from the Astral Plane. As expected, he found the real cause of Obed’s death.
Obed wanted Wayne, but ignorant of his true form, he let his guard down and got corrupted instead. Having lost his sanity, he opened the Gate of Hell and ended up swallowed by an Astral Worm passing by.
That would explain all the suspicious parts about Obed’s death.
How wonderful!
