My Unique Adaptation Skill in Another world-Chapter 27 - 26: The Imperial Capital 2
The meeting room was intimate, a low table surrounded by cushions, maps and documents laid out across its surface. The delegates sat in a loose circle, Iori at the head.
"Now that we’re settled," Iori began, "let’s discuss the Jubilee."
She unrolled a schedule, pointing to marked dates.
"The Jubilee begins in three days, It runs for a full week and culminates in the Emperor’s address on the final day."
"Week-long?" Leo asked.
"Grand celebrations always are," Akane said. "Opening ceremonies, cultural exhibitions, tournaments, diplomatic meetings, there’s a lot happening."
Iori continued. "Day one will be opening ceremonies at the Grand Arena, all delegations are expected to attend. There will be cultural exhibitions."
"Days two through four involve various competitions, magical demonstrations, craftsmanship displays, and preliminary combat tournaments. Diplomatic meetings will happen concurrently for those conducting official business."
"Day five marks the beginning of the grand tournament, this is where skilled fighters from all races compete. It runs through days six and seven, with finals on the last day before the Emperor’s address."
She looked at Leo specifically. "You’ll be attending as a First House representative. That means formal attire for ceremonies, appropriate conduct at all events, and representing us well if you choose to participate in any competitions."
Takeshi’s voice came flat. "You are really going all out bring him along, hopefully our ’representative’ doesn’t embarrass the House."
Iori’s gaze snapped to him. "Takeshi."
Just his name, but the ice in her tone was clear.
He looked away.
She continued as if he hadn’t spoken. "The city is on high alert, there have been rumors of threats, though nothing concrete, security will be everywhere. So stay in groups when possible. Don’t wander into dangerous looking places and if you need anything, the guards and attendants are available."
"For the next two days, you’re free to explore, rest, or train as you wish, familiarize yourselves with the nearby areas, visit the academy if you’re interested." She looked at Leo again. "Try not to get lost."
"I hear you loud and clear, but wouldn’t it be weird though see a human as part of the delegates? " Leo asked.
"Oh it will, but you open to refuse if it’s too much for you " Iori replied with a smirk, and challenge in her voice.
"Just don’t be shocked when I start telling people that we are a couple" Leo shot back playful.
The both chuckled a bit at the comment, making Takeshi roll his eyes so hard they nearly fell out, Daichi and Yuki stayed composed but Akane was enjoying the scene.
The briefing concluded shortly after. The group dispersed to their own activities.
Leo returned to his room, thinking.
Three days until the Jubilee began. Seven days of events and politics and competition. And at the end of it, he academy would start afterward, Iori would eventually leave...
But for now, he still had time.
Time to explore, to learn, and to prepare.
He changed into simpler quality clothes, took a small amount of coin, and headed out into the capital alone.
---
The noble quarter was pristine and stifling in equal measure.
Leo walked streets lined with mansions and walled estates. Nobles in fine clothing strolled past with servants trailing behind. Shops sold items he couldn’t begin to afford, enchanted jewelry, rare alchemical ingredients, custom-made weapons of masterwork quality.
After twenty minutes, he found himself naturally drifting away from the wealth and toward something more..."real".
The scholar quarter lay adjacent to the noble district, close enough to walk but different in character. Libraries with tall windows dominated the landscape. Bookshops displayed tomes on everything from history to magical theory. Students in academy robes moved between buildings, arguing about philosophy or discussing spell formulations.
The atmosphere was intellectual rather than wealthy. People moved with purpose born from curiosity, not status.
Leo felt more comfortable immediately.
He wandered through the streets, pausing occasionally to look at shop displays or watch students debate on street corners. In the distance, perhaps thirty minutes away, he could see what had to be the Imperial Academy, a massive campus with multiple buildings, training fields, and towers visible even from here.
Too far to visit today. He’d need to plan that properly.
Instead, he continued exploring the nearby areas, eventually finding himself at the edge of a market district. The contrast was immediate, noise and color and life. Street vendors called out their wares, the smell of grilled meat and spices filled the air.
Leo bought a skewer of seasoned meat from a beastkin vendor and ate as he walked. It was delicious, better than anything he’d had on the ship, different from outpost food.
The market was more diverse than anywhere he’d seen in the noble quarter. Humans, yes, but also elves browsing herb stalls, dwarves examining metalwork, beastkin selling and buying in equal measure. All races mixing, mostly peacefully.
Mostly.
He noticed the same patterns from the carriage ride, human guards watched non-humans more carefully, elves kept to certain sections, beastkin moved with cautious and awareness, ready for trouble.
The peace was real, but also it was fragile.
Leo spent another hour exploring before the sun began its descent toward evening. The capital was too large to see in a day, or a week, or maybe even a year, each district was its own world.
He’d need months just to understand the areas near the estate.
The thought was simultaneously overwhelming and exciting.
As he made his way back toward the scholar quarter, following a route that would eventually lead to the noble district and the estate, he found himself in a small plaza.
A public garden space, not large. It had a fountain burbled at the center, water catching the late afternoon light, benches sat beneath trees that provided shade from the sun.
A few people occupied the space, students reading, an elderly feeding birds, a couple conversing quietly.
Leo sat on an empty bench, grateful for the rest. His legs ached from walking, his mind buzzed with impressions of the city.
He watched the fountain, letting his thoughts settle, a small smile appeared think about his last experience with a fountain which sounded like a life time ago, but that too washed passed.
Then someone sat beside him, Close enough he caught her scent, something floral and sweet.
Leo turned, slightly startled.
A young woman met his gaze with an amused smile.
She was beautiful in a way that made him forget what he’d been thinking about. High elf, the pointed ears and ethereal features were unmistakable, polished black hair fell in a loose braid over one shoulder, so dark it caught the light like silk, hazel eyes regarded him with open curiosity and something playful dancing in their depths.
She was tall, he realized, easily six feet or more, but not taller than himself, legs crossed graceful as she settled on the bench.
The simple dress she wore did nothing to hide her figure, if anything, the flowing fabric emphasized it, the swell of her breasts, the curve of her waist, hips that flared beneath the thin material.
Nothing she had on screamed wealth or status, no obvious jewelry, no guards hovering nearby.
But there was something about her presence, the way she moved, the confidence in how she’d simply sat down.
This was definetly someone mportant, his instincts whispered.
"You’re new to the capital," she said. Not a question, more of a statement delivered with amusement.
"Is it that obvious?" Leo managed.
"You’re looking at everything like it’s the first time." Her smile widened. "It’s charming, actually, most people here are too jaded to really see anything anymore."
Leo didn’t know how to respond to that.
"Where are you from?" she asked, settling more comfortably on the bench. Like she planned to stay.
"Anywhere the wind takes me," he said. "But currently I’m traveling with... associates."
One elegant eyebrow rose. "Associates? That’s wonderfully vague. Are they nobles? Merchants? Criminals?"
Leo couldn’t help but smiled slightly. "Diplomats, I suppose."
"Diplomatic escort." She tilted her head, studying him. "Interesting work for someone who looks like a fighter."
"What makes you think I’m a fighter?"
"The way you sit, the scars on your hands, the fact that you scanned the entire plaza for threats before relaxing." She leaned back. "You’re aware of your surroundings in a way soldiers are, but you also don’t move like military. So... fighter."
Leo had to admit, she was perceptive, and had obviously been watching him.
"What brings someone like you to the capital?" she continued. "Besides escorting diplomats who probably don’t need escorting."
"I’ll be attending the academy," Leo said. "After the Jubilee."
Her interest clearly sharpened. "Really? What will you study?"
"I’ll be focusing on combat and magic, hopefully learn things to help survive."
"Practical, and two disciplines as well." She nodded approvingly. "I like that, the academy is usually treated like a social club, you sound like you actually want to learn."
"Knowledge is useful."
"It is." She was quiet for a moment, "So...what’s your name?"
"Leo."
She tested it, voice soft. "Leo. It suits you."
He waited for her to reciprocate. She didn’t.
"And you are?" he prompted.
"Does it matter?" Her smile turned mischievous. "We’re just two people talking in a garden."
"Usually people reciprocate, when they get to name sharing."
"Usually isn’t always." She stood gracefully, and Leo found himself standing too without thinking about it. She was indeed tall, maybe six-two, looking him nearly in the eye. "I should go. Responsibilities await."
"Wait—" Leo started.
She glanced back. "Yes?"
"How will I find you again?"
Her smile softened into something almost fond. "I have a feeling we’ll run into each other, Leo. The capital isn’t as big as it seems." A pause. "Especially not when you’re looking for someone."
Then she turned and walked away, disappearing into the evening crowd moving through the plaza.
Leo stood there, slightly stunned. Those hazel eyes with their shifting colors, the contrast of that dark hair against pale elven skin, the way she moved, confident, sensual without trying, a smile that promised mischief, and body that made it very difficult to focus on conversation.
"Who the hell was that?"
