My Ultimate OP System: Summoning All Dragons, Gods, Heroes & Villains-Chapter 85: Right Of Protegitur (Bonus)
Behind him, the dark horse faded away into black miasma and Nightrider quickly rolled back onto his feet, turning briefly to see the passing essence of his mount.
He gritted his teeth but couldn’t waste time mourning the loss.
With an explosive burst of speed, he propelled himself forward, the force reverberating through the air like a thunderclap as he pressed on in pursuit.
Joe ran forward across another rooftop when suddenly his senses tingled.
He stopped abruptly and leaned his head backward just as an arrow shot past his face so close he could feel the wind from it slicing through the air beside him.
His eyes turned to his right side immediately as his enhanced vision caught sight of a figure standing several hundred meters away on a distant rooftop.
It was woman dressed in a frilled skirt attire, while holding a bow in her hands. A white hawk perched on her shoulder, and she watched him intently with unblinking eyes.
This lady was a ranger, and one of the many bounty seekers who had come out hunting for him, especially as his current location had been made public.
She already had another arrow nocked and ready. With that, she fired again. The arrow sped through the air so fast it became little more than a blur, heading straight for Joe’s position.
In the same instant, Joe aimed Katarina at the incoming shot and pulled the trigger.
The arrow’s iron head collided with Joe’s bullet midair, and both canceled each other out upon impact. The arrow splintered apart while Joe’s bullet ricocheted off.
But unfortunately for Joe, in that brief period of time where he had been forced to stop by that distant ranger’s interference, Nightrider had already arrived.
The King class summon had closed the distance while Joe had been distracted dealing with that sniper shot from afar.
Nightrider was already airborne, leaping toward Joe with his sword raised and ready to be brought down upon him.
"Surge, Nobunaga!" The summon called out to his blade as he descended. And the sword instantly took on a brilliant bluish glow of energy that passed along its entire length.
Joe turned toward it with widened eyes as he realized too late what was about to happen next. For just one brief moment it felt like that strike was going to land cleanly upon him.
But then, suddenly, he appeared.
Casper Novachrono.
He materialized out of thin air between Joe and Nightrider, catching Nobunaga’s blade edge effortlessly between his thumb and index finger.
Asides the purple miasma glowing around him, Casper had a wide playful grin, long black hair and purple glowing eyes with mischief dancing in them.
"Casper?" Joe said, his face frozen in shock.
In that same moment, another figure landed gracefully beside Joe.
A woman in a short skirt and fitted blouse raised her hand forward. A magic circle materialized over her palm instantly, projecting a protective barrier that intercepted the next arrow attack from the distant ranger.
The arrow deflected off the barrier.
Joe’s eyes widened even further in recognition the woman. "Greta?"
In the next second, along those rooftops, about eight other figures arrived at different spots. And they all wore either three-piece suits or elegant dresses.
They were the League of Assassins.
Casper still had that playful grin on his face as he watched Nightrider struggle desperately to pull his sword away from his grip.
"What? Am I holding it too hard?" He asked in a mocking tone, tilting his head slightly like a curious child.
Then he tightened his grip just a fraction more and cracks formed along Nobunaga’s blade instantly. The glowing steel splintered and burst apart in a shower of light fragments, forcibly returning the weapon into motes of energy.
Nightrider’s eyes went wide with shock.
But in that very moment, the King class summon also disappeared into motes of light as his summoner had recalled him.
Down below on the streets, Redcape turned his motorcycle around sharply and sped off in the opposite direction without hesitation. He knew when he was outmatched.
Casper’s grin faded into an exaggerated pout as he said sadly, "Too bad. I wanted to play a little."
"I don’t understand," Joe said, still in shock. "How are you guys here?"
Casper turned toward him, tilted his head slightly, and said casually, "Did you not invoke your Right of Protegitur?"
"But I thought Lucien said..." Joe began.
Casper cut him off with a dismissive wave. "Boss obviously doesn’t want trouble in his place of business."
He tapped the side of his head with one finger, adding, "It’s common sense."
Joe still looked dumbfounded, but Casper continued.
"Honestly, I’m kinda jealous of you, Joe." He made a childish sad face with a jutted-out lower lip. "My total bounty isn’t even a quarter of yours."
He looked genuinely downcasted for a moment, then his expression shifted again as he added thoughtfully, "But on our way here, I killed a lot more of these bounty hunters chasing after you."
His purple eyes lit up with excitement as he stroked his chin in contemplation. "So... hmm... let’s say I may have the chance at a one million bounty reward too!"
He drifted off into genuine thought at the prospect now, nodding to himself enthusiastically while completely ignoring Joe’s presence.
"So what’s the plan?" Joe asked. "How did Lucien say we do this?"
Casper looked up suddenly, blinking in surprise. "Wait, you’re still here?"
"Huh?" Joe reacted, looking confused and mildly offended.
Casper sighed dramatically and shrugged. "Your presence in the area has already gone public. You need to move, Joe. We only came to cover for you, but the boss still expects you out of town by nightfall."
Joe nodded in understanding, then raised Katarina in compact mode toward another distant building and fired the grappling line. The wire went taut and yanked him forward through the air toward the next rooftop. And just like that, Joe was gone.
Casper stared after him for a moment, then crossed his arms with a pout on his face again.
"Rudeee... He didn’t even say thanks."
But then suddenly his expression went blank as his playful demeanor vanished in an instant.
His purple eyes sharpened dangerously as his senses detected multiple approaching presences converging on their location from all directions at once.
A wide grin slowly arched across his lips, then spoke out loud so all the other League members positioned around him could hear:
"I know we can all sense the number of prey approaching, but heed my warning: if anyone takes my kill... you will replace it with your own life."
Then he muttered under his breath with genuine excitement gleaming in his eyes:
"I’m going to get my one million bounty."
