Chapter 124: A Haze Of Dark Memories

Ethan sighed and shook his head slightly. "You know you don’t have to do that"

Hayley quickly replied. "Ethan, Anyone comes for you, they come for me too."

Ethan said nothing for a moment, just stared at her with a casual smile on his face before nodding in acknowledgment.

Hayley turned toward the car then, but right before she opened the door, she glanced back at him and winked with a smile on her lips. Then she climbed inside, and drove off.

Ethan remained there a moment, watching the car disappear into the evening light before turning back and walking up the slightly elevated platform leading into main house, where Eduardo waited.

Actually, the butler had only just returned a few moments ago, right as Hayley was about to leave.

Eduardo began speaking immediately as Ethan approached. "I apologize, Master Ethan. I bear the blame for not being here when they came."

But Ethan cut him short before he could continue further. "That’s not the case," he said. "And even though I can’t explain why they suddenly turned back, they would have ended up being outnumbered regardless."

There was a pause before Ethan asked, "So what about the weapon?"

Eduardo sighed and said, "It’s a really long story, Master Ethan. Turns out it was auctioned off way back in some black market, and it was a difficult task finding out how it moved hands over time."

"But...?" Ethan trailed off, waiting for him to continue.

"We eventually got hold of it," Eduardo said. "It was a huge purchase to gain it back."

Ethan frowned slightly. "How much?"

"Fifteen thousand gold," Eduardo replied.

Ethan sighed.

"The sniper has been placed with the body at the morgue," Eduardo continued. "It’ll be burnt along with the body tomorrow."

Ethan’s frown deepened as frustration crept into his voice. "Could it not happen tonight? I’m tired of playing defense. We’re wasting time."

"I understand your plight, Master Ethan," Eduardo said calmly, "but even as I asked, there was no better time it could have been adjusted for."

Ethan sighed again and looked out toward the darkening sky for a moment before speaking again. "Isabella called earlier, they made an attempt with her as well."

Eduardo’s eyes widened in genuine surprise. "What? A direct confrontation?"

Ethan shook his head. "She said it felt like eyes on her from a distance and called it a scrying spell. Trying to spy on her or something."

Eduardo looked visibly angry. "They’ve gone mad."

"Perhaps," Ethan said with a shrug before adding, "This barrier interferes with that for us thankfully, but like I said... We’re running out of time."

Then he turned and walked through the entrance into the manor.

Eduardo clenched his fists in annoyance at how everything had played out today.

The next day in Lucien’s living room...

On one side, was Hector. A man in his mid-thirties with slicked-back dark hair, wearing a black coat, and he held a thin black cane in one hand more for style than support.

Dante was on the other side, with no visible expression on his face.

Greta stood before them both with magic circles glowing over each of her open palms.

She stared into Dante’s eyes, waiting on his cooperation.

Dante stared right back at her, then said: "I do not appreciate my thoughts being read, Uncle."

Lucien was behind Greta with both arms crossed, watching the proceedings. He spoke in a firm tone. "In your mind are the best descriptions for what we need. Greta will only go as far as the most recent memories and nothing more."

Dante muttered, "Hm," then nodded while still staring at Greta.

Greta raised her right hand with the glowing circle and said to Dante, "Stare into it and do not blink."

Dante gave no reaction as Greta focused the circle over his face. The symbols within it began rotating, and after a moment, Greta’s eyes glowed purple as her head tilted upward slightly.

Dante’s thoughts flowed through her mind like a river of fragmented images.

It started with a haze of dark memories. One of them showed his summon piercing through the chest of an unknown person, with blood pooling beneath the body as Dante watched from the shadows.

Another peculiar memory surfaced where he had entered a bathroom with lotion and tissue paper in hand.

Greta’s expression didn’t change as the memories continued unfolding until she found what she was looking for; the events from his camp experience.

It began with students moving about, then the breach zone. After that came several moments of Dante simply watching, his attention fixed on Ethan and the girl he spent most of his time with, Bettie.

Then the auction; the destroyed canopy; the faces of teachers and students scattered across the scene.

She was able to differentiate that the uniformed students wearing black and red weren’t Ethan’s classmates but belonged to Mallory High instead.

With that, she stopped the spell on Dante. They both stared at each other for a moment with no expressions on either face.

Greta then turned over to Hector and said simply, "Stare into the circle."

Hector did as instructed without hesitation. But in his situation, another magic circle opened above his head. His eyes glowed the same purple hue as Greta’s, and after several seconds passed, the glow faded and the circle disappeared.

Greta was a mage who specialized in mind-related spells. What she had just done was extract memories from Dante’s mind using a mind-reading spell, then transfer them directly into Hector’s mind.

Hector stared blankly for a second as the foreign memories settled into place inside his head . He nodded once and said calmly, "I can tell what they look like." 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"Show me," Lucien said.

Right then, Hector stretched his hand out to his side and whispered, "Morthorz."

A violet magic circle opened beside him, and from within it emerged his summon.

The creature imposing, and Its body seemed to be made of smoke. It had multiple glowing eyes of varying sizes, each one blinking independently of the others as they focused on different points around the room simultaneously.

The summon then began shapeshifting, suddenly taking on the appearance of a student. Then it shifted again into another student and continuously in flawless detail, from facial features to clothing and even posture.
