The whistle blows and Atalanta kick off with the ball moving immediately backward to Demien who drops deeper exactly as Gasperini instructed during halftime, and Milan press forward with Tonali and Bennacer both closing the space while their body positions suggest they expect him to try turning like he did in the first half.

Demien waits and absorbs the pressure while the ball stays under his right foot, and when both midfielders commit their weight forward he clips a diagonal pass over their heads toward the channel where Lookman has already started his run down the left side.

On the Milan bench their manager stands with both hands gesturing frantically toward the pitch while his voice carries instructions that can’t be heard clearly over the stadium noise, and several players on the touchline warm up quickly because substitutions are coming soon.

Giroud claps his hands trying to rally his teammates while his voice cuts through the confusion.

"Stay calm!" he shouts, and his Italian carries across the pitch. "Keep the ball! Make them chase!"
