Chapter 312: Chapter 300: Coppa Italia Final - Milan Vs Atalanta IV

Wednesday, May 14, 2025

Stadio Olimpico, Rome

Second Half

6:52 PM

The whistle blows and Atalanta kick off with the ball moving immediately backward to Demien who drops deeper exactly as Gasperini instructed during halftime, and Milan press forward with Tonali and Bennacer both closing the space while their body positions suggest they expect him to try turning like he did in the first half.

Demien waits and absorbs the pressure while the ball stays under his right foot, and when both midfielders commit their weight forward he clips a diagonal pass over their heads toward the channel where Lookman has already started his run down the left side.

Andrea Pirlo — Deep-Lying Playmaker

The ball drops perfectly into Lookman’s stride and he controls it on his chest without breaking pace, and Kalulu backs off rather than diving in because committing to a tackle this early in the half could leave space behind.

Lookman drives at the defender and cuts inside sharply before delivering a dangerous cross toward the six-yard box with pace on the ball, and Scamacca meets it with his head while Maignan reacts by throwing himself upward to palm the ball over the crossbar.

Corner.

The Atalanta supporters in the southern end raise their voices for the first time since halftime while their flags wave frantically, and Koopmeiners jogs toward the corner flag to take it quickly before Milan’s defensive shape can fully organize.

The ball swings toward the near post with inswinging trajectory and Tomori is first to it, and he heads clear but only as far as the edge of the penalty area where Demien has positioned himself exactly where second balls tend to drop.

He controls with his right foot and shifts the ball slightly left while Bennacer closes from his blind side, and in the fraction of a second before the tackle arrives Demien strikes with his right foot.

The away section holds its breath and the shot is rising toward the top corner with power behind it, and Maignan leaps full stretch while his right arm extends as far as physically possible.

Fingertips.

The ball deflects off the crossbar and bounces clear toward the halfway line, and Atalanta players hold their heads while groans echo from their supporters because that was inches from changing everything.

46’ - 53’ |

The tempo doesn’t drop and Atalanta win the ball back immediately when de Roon intercepts a lazy Milan pass in midfield, and possession is recycled quickly through short combinations that stretch Milan’s defensive shape horizontally.

In the fifty-third minute it happens.

Ederson intercepts a loose Milan pass near the halfway line when Tonali’s touch is slightly heavy, and he looks up immediately before threading a pass between two red and black shirts into the space where Demien has dropped to receive.

Demien collects with his back to goal and Tonali is tight behind him again with his chest pressing against Demien’s shoulder trying to prevent the turn, and for two seconds the ball is shielded while Demien scans the positioning ahead through peripheral vision.

N’Golo Kanté — Everywhere at Once

The pressure builds as Tonali’s weight increases but Demien’s body stays balanced and strong, and then his decision comes—he rolls the ball backward with his sole and spins away from Tonali in one fluid motion that takes him completely away from the challenge.

「LEGENDARY SKILL ACTIVATED」

Johan Cruyff — Turn Innovator

Space opens and suddenly there’s twenty-five yards between Demien and Maignan’s goal, and Kalulu steps out from the defensive line to close him down while Tomori holds his position to prevent passes being played behind.

Demien takes two touches forward with his eyes locked on Maignan’s positioning, and the goalkeeper is slightly off his line trying to narrow the angle for potential passes to runners.

He plants his left foot and strikes with his right while his body weight transfers completely through the ball.

Finesse Curler (Epic)

The ball stays low and skims across the turf while dipping slightly as it travels, and Maignan dives to his right but the trajectory beats him and the ball slides inside the near post before settling into the net.

GOAL: ATALANTA 1-3 AC MILAN (53’)

The Atalanta away section explodes with noise that crashes across the stadium like a physical wave, and flags wave frantically while smoke rises from flares creating blue and black clouds that drift across the upper tiers.

Demien turns toward the traveling support with both fists clenched at his sides and his voice releases in a roar that’s audible even over the crowd noise, and teammates sprint toward him from every direction.

Lookman arrives first and grabs his shoulders while his face shows relief mixed with belief, and Ederson wraps him in a bear hug from behind while lifting him briefly off the ground, and within seconds the entire team has piled on in celebration.

The scoreboard updates above the center circle.

Commentary Booth

"WALTER!" the lead commentator shouts while his voice rises over the chaos. "What a strike from twenty-five yards! Atalanta have hope! They needed that so desperately and their young star has delivered when it mattered most!"

"Look at the technique," his colleague adds while the replay begins. "The Cruyff turn to create space, two touches forward, and then that low finish that just skims across the turf and beats Maignan inside the near post. That’s world-class execution under pressure."

53’ - 56’ |

Milan restart nervously and the mood has shifted because one goal against the run of play can happen but conceding now means momentum is completely with Atalanta, and their passes become slightly more cautious while they try to slow the tempo.

Atalanta press immediately with intensity that’s higher than anything they showed in the first half, and the shape is aggressive with Demien and Koopmeiners both pushing high to force Milan backward.

They win the ball back within ten seconds when Lookman closes down Kalulu and forces a hurried clearance that travels only as far as Ederson, and possession is regained in Milan’s half where space exists behind their retreating defensive line.

Lookman receives on the left and drives inside past Calabria who backs off rather than committing to a challenge, and he plays a quick one-two with Koopmeiners that takes him past Bennacer’s attempted interception before delivering a low cross into the penalty area.

Scamacca stretches to reach it but the ball is traveling too fast and it runs past his outstretched foot, and for a moment it seems the chance is gone until Demien arrives late at the back post where Milan’s defensive shape hasn’t tracked his run.

Unmarked.

Six yards out.

Side-footed finish into the empty net.

GOAL: ATALANTA 2-3 AC MILAN (56’)

The away section erupts again and this time the noise is even louder because hope has transformed into genuine belief, and Demien turns toward the corner flag with both fists raised toward the sky while his expression shows focused intensity rather than wild celebration.

Claudio Marchisio — Balanced Engine

The entire Atalanta squad chases him and players jump on top of each other in a heap near the advertising boards, and the stadium shakes while the scoreboard updates again showing the gap is now only one goal.

Commentary Booth

"Are we witnessing history unfold?" the commentator’s voice cracks slightly with emotion. "Three minutes! Two goals! Atalanta are right back in this match and Demien Walter is single-handedly dragging his team back from the brink!"

"Milan look rattled," his colleague observes while the camera shows their bench. "Their manager is on his feet shouting instructions and you can see the panic in their players’ body language. They had this match won at halftime and now suddenly they’re hanging on."

56’ - 61’ |

On the Milan bench their manager stands with both hands gesturing frantically toward the pitch while his voice carries instructions that can’t be heard clearly over the stadium noise, and several players on the touchline warm up quickly because substitutions are coming soon.

Giroud claps his hands trying to rally his teammates while his voice cuts through the confusion.

"Stay calm!" he shouts, and his Italian carries across the pitch. "Keep the ball! Make them chase!"

Play restarts and Milan try to slow the tempo through short passes that move side to side in their own half, but Atalanta’s press is relentless and doesn’t allow them time to settle into any rhythm.

In the sixty-first minute they win it back again when de Roon steps in front of Brahim Díaz and intercepts a pass that was meant to switch play, and the ball is immediately moved to Ederson who looks forward for options.

Ederson plays it into Demien’s feet and he tries to thread another pass through Milan’s defensive line, but Tomori reads the intention perfectly and steps across to intercept before the ball can reach Scamacca’s run.

Milan break quickly on the counter and Leão receives on the left where space has opened because Atalanta’s shape is stretched high up the pitch, and he drives forward with the ball at his feet while only Tolói tracks back desperately.

He’s one-on-one and cuts inside before shooting from the edge of the area with his right foot, and Musso dives full stretch to his right while his hand reaches the ball just enough to push it wide of the post.

Corner.

The away section exhales collectively because that would have killed the comeback completely, and Musso receives brief applause from his teammates while he quickly positions himself for the corner.

The ball swings in toward the near post and Giroud rises highest using his superior strength advantage, but his header goes just over the crossbar and into the crowd behind the goal.

61’ - 68’ |

Milan sense they need to score again to kill Atalanta’s momentum completely and they push forward more aggressively, and space opens behind their defensive line because their fullbacks advance higher trying to create width.

In the sixty-eighth minute Atalanta exploit that space.

Demien drops deep again to collect from Musso’s throw and he turns immediately before looking up to scan the positioning ahead, and Hateboer is making an overlapping run down the right flank where Milan’s left-back has pushed too high.
