My SSS-Rank Grim Reaper System-Chapter 58: Shadows
**[APARTMENT ]**
Alex couldn’t sleep.
He had tried. For two full hours, lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to the distant sounds of the ocean and the harbor.
But sleep wouldn’t come.
Just that feeling—persistent, irritating, impossible to ignore.
Someone was watching him.
He sat up in bed, rubbing his face with both hands. The room was dark except for the silver moonlight filtering through the window that looked out over the sea.
Grim stirred from his cushion in the corner, red lights flickering to life.
**"Master. Not. Sleeping. Again."**
"I can’t," Alex admitted quietly. "Something’s wrong. I can feel it."
**"System. Feels. It. Too."**
Alex blinked, turning toward the small skeleton. "The system talks to you directly?"
**"Not. Talk. Directly. But. I feel. Its. Warnings. Through. Bond."**
Interesting. Apparently his connection with Grim ran deeper than he’d realized.
He got up, padded barefoot to the window, and looked down at the city below.
Port Coral at night was beautiful—lights blinking like fallen stars, the ocean gleaming under a full moon, a soft breeze carrying the smell of salt and fish. Ships rocking gently in the harbor. Everything peaceful.
But his instinct—that same instinct that had kept him alive through months of being hunted—was screaming the opposite.
**[SYSTEM – ALERT]**
**[THREAT DETECTED – UPDATE]**
**[THREAT LEVEL: HIGH → VERY HIGH]**
**[NATURE: HOSTILE SURVEILLANCE CONFIRMED]**
**[ESTIMATED DISTANCE: 200–500 METERS]**
**[DURATION OF SURVEILLANCE: 16+ CONTINUOUS HOURS]**
**[PATTERN: PROFESSIONAL OBSERVATION, NOT AMATEUR]**
**[RECOMMENDATIONS:]**
**– DO NOT GO OUT ALONE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES**
**– ALERT ALLIES IMMEDIATELY**
**– PREPARE DEFENSES AND POSSIBLE EVACUATION**
**– INCREASE VIGILANCE TO MAXIMUM**
Alex read through the notifications, jaw tightening.
Sixteen hours. Someone had been watching them for sixteen continuous hours without interruption.
That wasn’t coincidence. That wasn’t idle curiosity.
That was *professional*.
"Grim," he said, voice low but firm. "Wake Raven and Emily. Now."
**"Understood."**
The small skeleton leaped from his cushion and ran silently toward the other rooms.
Alex stayed at the window, scanning the visible rooftops.
Nothing. At least nothing he could make out from here.
But they were out there.
Watching.
Waiting.
---
**[LIVING ROOM – 15 MINUTES LATER]**
The three of them gathered around the table—Alex, Raven (hair disheveled, clearly just pulled from sleep, but eyes already sharp), and Emily (surprisingly already awake, a steaming mug of tea in hand, as though she’d been waiting to be called).
Grim (80cm form) sat on the table between them, a small presence that somehow made everyone feel just a little safer.
"The system says someone’s watching us?" asked Raven, rubbing her eyes but voice completely serious. "Since when, exactly?"
"Since yesterday afternoon. Sixteen continuous hours according to the last update." Alex drummed his fingers on the table—a nervous habit. "This isn’t paranoia. It’s confirmed."
"From the tournament?" Emily suggested, blowing on her tea. "Someone recognized you there?"
"Probably. Lyssa did. Others could have too." Alex rubbed the back of his neck. "I used Grim’s Awakening Form. That was... memorable."
Raven straightened fully, completely awake now. "The Temple?"
"Possible. Or..." Alex hesitated. "...bounty hunters. 150,000 crowns is enough motivation for professionals."
A heavy silence fell over the table.
The clock on the wall marked the seconds. *Tick. Tick. Tick.*
Finally, Emily spoke, voice carefully controlled. "What do we do?"
Alex considered the options. "First, we confirm how real this is. Raven—can you do reconnaissance? See if you notice anything unusual on the nearby rooftops."
"Now? At three in the morning?"
"*Especially* now. If someone’s conducting professional surveillance, they’ll have a night watch. Rotating shifts. And at this hour, whoever’s on duty might be tired. Less alert."
Raven nodded, already getting to her feet. "Give me twenty minutes. Thirty at most."
"Be careful. Only observe. Don’t engage with anyone."
"I’m not an idiot," Raven replied, but offered a small smile to take the edge off the words.
She disappeared into her room to change into something more suitable for climbing rooftops.
Emily looked at Alex. "And if she finds something?"
"Then we know it’s real. And we prepare."
**"And. If. She Finds. Nothing?"** asked Grim.
"Then it means whoever’s watching us is *very* good at hiding. Which is almost worse."
---
**[PORT CORAL ROOFTOPS – RAVEN’S PERSPECTIVE – 3:30 AM]**
Raven moved like a shadow across the rooftops.
She had slipped out through the apartment’s back window, scaled the neighboring building using ledges and decorative stonework, then taken an indirect route—a wide arc around their neighborhood, always keeping to the shadows.
Looking for... something. Anything out of place.
Her appearance, transformed by Fragment 3, was an advantage here—enhanced eyes that saw better in darkness, quieter movements, sharper instincts.
Five minutes of searching—nothing unusual.
Ten minutes—only stray cats and the occasional drunk stumbling home.
Fifteen minutes—she started to wonder if Alex was being paranoid.
Then she saw it.
A rooftop three buildings north of theirs—a figure beside a large chimney, using the shadow it cast as near-perfect cover.
But Raven had been looking *specifically* for anomalies in shadows.
And that shadow was too *dense*. Too *solid*. Too *human-shaped*.
She approached with extreme care, staying low, using her own dark cloak to blend into the night.
Fifty meters away.
Forty.
Thirty-five.
The figure adjusted its position—a small but deliberate movement. Still facing the direction of Alex’s apartment building.
Thirty meters.
Raven could make out more detail now.
A man. Definitely a man, judging by build. Dark robes or cloak. Something in his hands gleaming faintly—magical lenses? Enchanted night-vision binoculars?
Professional surveillance. No question.
Twenty-five meters.
She ran through her options quickly.
*Option 1:* Confront directly—find out who he was, what he wanted. Risky. She didn’t know how strong he was, or if he had backup.
*Option 2:* Go back and report to Alex—safer, but she’d lose the chance to gather more information.
She settled on a compromise—get a little closer, try to catch any conversation if he was using a communicator, then pull back.
Twenty meters.
Eighteen.
Fifteen.
She could almost make out facial features now—
Her foot came down on a loose roof tile.
**CRACK.**
A tiny sound. Barely audible over the sea breeze.
But enough.
The figure froze completely.
Then, with alarming speed, turned his head—directly toward where Raven was hiding.
For a fraction of a second that felt like an eternity, their eyes met.
Cold eyes. Calculating. *Professional.*
Then the man whistled—sharp and piercing, like the call of a night bird.
From *above*—something answered.
A deep, guttural screech that turned Raven’s blood to ice in her veins.
Not a bird.
Something far, far larger.
"Damn," she muttered, spinning around.
She *ran.*
---
**[APARTMENT – 20 MINUTES LATER]**
Raven practically flew through the back window, landing in a roll, gasping.
Alex and Emily jumped to their feet.
"What happened?" Alex asked immediately.
"Confirmed," Raven managed between heavy breaths. "Surveillance. Man on a rooftop, exactly where you said. Three buildings north. And he has a..." She swallowed, catching her breath. "...flying companion. Big. I didn’t get a clear look, but the sound it made... Wyvern. Or a lesser dragon. Something *large*."
Alex cursed under his breath. "Did he see you?"
"Yes. I accidentally made noise. We made direct eye contact for about a second."
"Did he give chase?"
"No. That’s what scares me most. He just... watched me. Like he didn’t care that I knew he was there."
Emily bit her lower lip. "That’s almost worse. It means he’s *confident*. He’s not worried about us knowing."
Grim spoke, voice unusually grave.
**"Professional. Hunter. Not. Amateur. Does Not. Make. Basic. Mistakes."**
"Exactly what I was thinking," Alex agreed. He stood, began pacing—thinking, planning. "So we need help. We can’t handle this alone."
"What kind of help?" asked Raven.
"Information first. We need to know *who* this is. How many there are. What resources they have." Alex stopped pacing. "We go see Sera. Tomorrow. First thing."
---
**[PORT CORAL GUILD – NEXT MORNING – 8 AM]**
Captain Sera received them in her office, a steaming mug of coffee in hand, looking as though she hadn’t slept much either.
"Early for you three," she remarked, gesturing to the chairs across from her desk. "Trouble?"
"We’re being watched," Alex said without preamble, taking a seat. "Professionally. Possibly a bounty hunter. Confirmed last night."
Sera’s relaxed expression vanished instantly. She set her coffee aside and leaned forward. "How long have you been under surveillance?"
"At least sixteen continuous hours. Possibly longer."
She sighed—long, tired, like someone who had been dreading exactly this conversation.
"Then my worst fears have been confirmed." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"What do you mean?" asked Emily.
Sera opened a drawer in her desk and pulled out three folders. She placed them on the desk in front of them.
"Three bounty hunters arrived in Port Coral five days ago. All registered with the Guild—standard protocol for professional hunters operating in Guild territory. And all three..." She opened the first folder. "...asked about exactly the same thing."
She turned the folder so they could read it.
**[INFORMATION QUERY:]**
*"Unique skeleton with dramatic size-shifting ability. Possibly linked to young summoner, brown hair, approximate level 35–40. Sighted in Port Coral area."*
Damn.
"The tournament," Alex murmured, closing his eyes. "I should have been more careful. I should have lost in the early rounds."
"Probably," Sera agreed, without unnecessary delicacy. "But it’s done. The question now is—what do you do about it?"
Emily spoke before Alex could. "Could we... relocate? Temporarily? Leave the city for a few weeks until they move on?"
Alex shook his head firmly. "No. We’ve run too many times already. Central City, the Fallen Citadel, now here... I’m not going to spend my life running every time someone recognizes me. That’s no way to *live*."
"Then you fight," Sera said simply. "And you’ll want information on who you’re fighting."
"Please," said Raven.
Sera spread all three folders open across the desk.
**[FOLDER 1]**
**Name:** Marcus "Bloodhound" Venn
**Level:** 51
**Specialty:** Tracking, ambushes, forest combat
**Companion:** Hellhound – Level 53
**Record:** 23 successful captures, 0 failures
**Notes:** Prefers capture alive but indifferent to collateral damage
**[FOLDER 2]**
**Name:** Lyra "Shadow" Kane
**Level:** 49
**Specialty:** Stealth, infiltration, clean eliminations
**Companion:** Mist Serpent – Level 50
**Record:** 19 captures/eliminations, 1 failure (target died before capture)
**Notes:** Prefers night work, rarely seen
**[FOLDER 3]**
**Name:** Kael Darkwind
**Level:** 54
**Specialty:** Direct combat, live target capture, interrogation
**Companion:** Black Wyvern – Level 56
**Record:** 37 successful captures, 0 failures, 0 accidental deaths
**Notes:** **GROUP LEADER. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. 30-YEAR VETERAN.**
Sera pointed to the third folder.
"The one most likely watching you is Kael. He’s the team leader. Most experienced. Most dangerous. And..." She paused meaningfully. "...he has a reputation for *never* failing a capture."
Alex studied the photo—a man in his forties, maybe forty-five, black hair with grey at the temples, eyes that seemed to look straight through the camera. Scars crossing his visible hands. The posture of a man who had survived a thousand fights.
"Level 54," Alex said quietly. "Fifteen levels above me."
"Sixteen," Sera corrected. "And it’s not just levels. It’s *experience*. Kael has been hunting fugitives since before you were born. He’s captured..." She checked the folder. "...thirty-seven targets in the last decade. Rogue mages. Assassins. Military deserters. Forbidden artifact carriers. *None* of them escaped."
Heavy silence.
"Wonderful," Raven muttered sarcastically.
"Is there anything else we should know?" Emily asked, voice small.
"Yes." Sera leaned back in her chair. "As Guild Master, I’m technically neutral. Registered hunters have the right to operate in my city as long as they don’t break the law. I..." She hesitated. "...cannot help you officially. The Guild must remain neutral."
"I understand," Alex said, though he felt his hope sink.
"*However*," Sera continued, "I can provide information. I can ’forget’ to report your movements if the hunters come asking. And..." A small smile. "...if you fight in self-defense, well, that’s completely legal, and the Guild won’t intervene."
"Thank you," said Alex, and he meant it.
"Don’t thank me yet. This is going to get ugly." Sera closed the folders. "Do you have a plan?"
Alex looked at his team. "Yes. We prepare. We stay together. And when they come for us... we survive."
---
**[THAT AFTERNOON]**
While the team rested briefly, Grim withdrew to the living room.
Practice.
Form transitions.
80cm → 1.5m → 2.5m → 1.5m → 80cm.
Over and over.
Three full seconds.
Two and a half.
Two.
One and a half.
**"Faster. I must. Be. Faster."**
Alex watched from the couch, a strategy book in his hands but not really reading.
"Why the obsession with speed?" he asked finally.
Grim stopped, turned his small skull toward Alex.
**"Because. In. Real. Battle. Every. Second. Matters."**
A pause, red lights glowing intensely.
**"If. Master. In. Danger. And. I. Take. Three. Seconds. To. Change. Form... Master. Could. Die. In. Those. Three. Seconds."**
Another pause.
**"Last. Time. Almost. Too. Late. Against. Lich. King. Will. Not. Let. That. Happen. Again."**
Alex felt something tighten in his chest.
"Grim... that wasn’t your fault. None of the times I’ve been in danger were your fault."
**"I know. Logically. I know. That."**
Grim resumed his practice.
**"But. Still. I will. Improve. Because. Protecting. Master. Is. My. Reason. For. Existing."**
80cm → 2.5m.
One full second.
**"Better. But. Still. Not. Enough. Must. Be. Instant."**
Alex said nothing more.
He just watched his companion—his friend—train relentlessly.
Preparing for a battle they both knew was coming.
---
**[ ROOFTOP 300 METERS AWAY ]**
Kael Darkwind observed the apartment building through enchanted magical binoculars, making mental notes.
He had seen everything.
The early morning departure (all together—never separated, he noted).
The visit to the Guild (probably seeking information or help).
The shopping in the Market District (magical alarms, potions—preparing for an attack, smart).
The return to the apartment (defensive setup, guard patterns established).
"They realized we’re watching them," he murmured to his black Wyvern, who rested beside him in the deep shadows. "They’re preparing. Good. Shows they’re not completely incompetent."
The Wyvern growled—a low, resonant sound that made the roof tiles vibrate beneath them.
"I know. Makes things harder. But not impossible." Kael lowered the binoculars, thinking. "I’ve observed their patterns for three full days now. I know their routines. Their weaknesses."
He pulled out a small notebook and reviewed his notes:
*– Black-haired girl (Fragment 3 carrier): Occasionally goes out on night patrol. Typical hours: 11 PM – 1 AM.*
*– Brown-haired girl (ex-Temple, healer): Visits local shrine every three days. Last visit: two days ago. Next probable: tomorrow.*
*– Alex Carter (primary target): Rarely goes out alone. Always with at least one other person + skeleton. NEVER vulnerable during the day.*
*– Skeleton (Fragment 1): Never sleeps. Patrols constantly. Greatest obstacle to silent night infiltration.*
Kael closed the notebook and put it away.
"Three more nights of observation," he decided. "Confirm final patterns. Identify optimal moment of vulnerability. Then..." A cold smile. "...I create a distraction. Split the group. Take Carter when he’s at his weakest."
He looked down at the building.
In the window, he could make out a figure moving—probably Carter, setting up his guard shift.
