Chapter 92: Learn The Bitter truth About Me

That night, Dennis sat on the living room sofa with the television on, opening his laptop to type an email to his mother to ask about his own identity. Daisy, sitting beside him while watching a movie on TV, glanced at what he was writing. After reading a bit of his draft, she turned her head and began reading his screen quite openly.

"Honey, why are you asking Mom who your biological parents are?" Daisy asked.

"I need to know the truth. Sorry if I startled you," Dennis answered, not wanting to hide anything from her.

Seeing Dennis’s serious expression and his clenched jaw, Daisy leaned against his arm and read in silence, though she occasionally stole a glance at his face.

"Is there something you want to tell me?" Daisy asked.

"There is, but honestly, I want to get an explanation from Dad and Mom first before I tell you," Dennis replied.

"Hmm... I see. But why are you only sending an email now? Why didn’t you just call when our city was close to Ruby City?" Daisy muttered, not wanting to press further out of respect for her husband’s boundaries.

"Because we’re about to enter the heart of the darkness, right? Before all communications go out, I’d better send an email first. The reply can come later once we pass through the core of the darkness," Dennis answered while typing.

"Oh... that makes sense," Daisy replied, resting her cheek against Dennis’s upper arm.

Dennis turned to look at Daisy’s face and his hands stopped typing. He watched her as she seemed focused, reading the letter to his mother with her round eyes behind her glasses. Then, he took a breath and exhaled.

"I’ll tell you what I’ve been going through," Dennis said.

"Okay," Daisy said, her voice cheerful and full of spirit.

Dennis immediately recounted the two dreams he had experienced. The first was when he was sleep-deprived and fainted on his way to the school building; the second happened after the match and dinner while he was drunk. Dennis said both dreams felt incredibly real—he could even feel the pain in his body as if he were remembering the sensation, and he felt fear, confusion, despair, and a mix of other emotions that were very vivid.

Daisy listened to it all, nodding along without saying a word. She just stared at Dennis with teary eyes behind her glasses, eventually taking them off. Dennis turned and held Daisy’s face to wipe away her tears.

"Hey... why are you crying?" Dennis asked.

"Um... I didn’t know you were going through something like that," Daisy answered.

"It was just a dream, even if it felt real. That’s why I’m emailing Mom—to ask for an explanation about those dreams so I can know the exact truth for once. You’ve met Dad and Mom, right? It’s obvious I don’t look like them. Since I was a kid, I was teased for being fat and called a foster kid. Back then, I didn’t understand... or maybe I did, but I just didn’t want to admit it. But after having those dreams, I can’t just ignore it anymore," Dennis said.

"Yeah... when I met your parents for the first time, I was actually surprised. For a second, I thought maybe you were adopted. But I pushed those thoughts far away because, besides loving you... I love your parents, too," Daisy replied.

"Well, that’s why I want to ask them for the real story. I’m 17 now; it’s time I know the truth... even if for now, it can only be through an email," Dennis replied.

"Do you want me to investigate who your real parents are, my husband?" asked Daisy Number Two, who suddenly emerged.

Dennis flinched in surprise, seeing Daisy’s eyes suddenly turn red and two mini fangs appearing in her open mouth, ready to bite his arm.

"Whoa... give me a heads-up when you’re coming out, Number Two, you scared me. And no thanks—even though I’m curious, I also don’t really want to know, so it’s better if you don’t go looking into it. Besides, my dreams took place in Ruby City, right? You couldn’t exactly go there even if you knew the network," Dennis replied.

"Hmm, that’s true... alright, I understand," Daisy Number Two said.

Then Daisy Number Two went quiet again and began sucking Dennis’s blood through his upper arm while looking at his laptop screen. Dennis calmly continued writing his email, letting Daisy Number Two feed. As he wrote paragraph after paragraph describing his dreams in great detail—since he could remember everything clearly—and asking for the truth about his identity, he also included a photo of himself and Daisy that he took with the laptop camera.

Dennis sent the email to his mom’s address and CC’d his dad. Then, he closed the laptop and leaned back, hugging Daisy as she released her bite, before wrapping his arm back around her so she could continue feeding while they watched television.

"Huaah,"

Dennis yawned, overcome by sleepiness; his eyes flickered and his head began to nod off. Daisy, noticing that Dennis was drowsy, immediately released her bite and laid him down in her lap. She then stroked the head of Dennis, who slept facing her, his arms wrapped around her waist and his face pressed against her stomach.

"Bzzzzzz,"

"Starting now, don’t come looking for me anymore. Tell that kid not to touch me so carelessly; he’s not mine. You slept with other people besides me, and I already gave you the money to get an abortion," a man in his mid-twenties shouted, pointing at a small child about three years old.

"Wh... why? It’s only natural for him to greet his father. What’s the matter? He’s your son; I’ve only ever been with you," the woman, roughly the same age as the man, screamed while hugging the child.

"Shut up! Don’t give me that, take this," the man yelled, his rage growing.

His hand, gripping a belt, swung upward, and he began lashing the metal buckle toward the woman’s back. Suddenly, the child’s body moved, breaking free from the woman’s embrace. He jumped to stand in front of the man and "craaaas," the boy was hit by the belt right across his temple and eye. Even though he winced in pain, he stared at the man in front of him.

"Don’t hit Mama," he screamed.

"Dennis!" the woman shrieked, turning back to hug Dennis, who still had his arms spread wide with tears streaming down his face and blood pouring from a long gash on his forehead. The man grew even more furious; he grabbed a large glass from the table and smashed it directly against Dennis’s head until Dennis collapsed. Before passing out, Dennis could hear his mother’s screams and the sound of her hitting the man with something—the sound was unmistakably clear.

When Dennis regained consciousness, he was already in the hospital with one eye and his head bandaged. Then, he heard the woman, his mother, being told by the doctor that due to the trauma Dennis had suffered to his head—specifically his eye—there was a possibility his eyes would become permanently crossed. Dennis turned to see his mother covering her face with both hands, sobbing uncontrollably behind them.

"Bzzzzzz,"

"Waaaaah,"

Suddenly, Dennis bolted upright from the lap of Daisy—who had already reverted to Daisy Number One—causing her to jump in surprise. Dennis’s body was instantly drenched in sweat, his breath was shallow, and his heart pounded violently. Daisy, seeing her husband looking so shaken, immediately reached for his shoulders, but Dennis stood up abruptly and turned around to face her. Daisy instinctively pulled her hands back, her face filled with deep anxiety and fear.

"Honey... what’s wrong?" Daisy asked, her voice soft and trembling.

Dennis didn’t answer. He clutched his face, his heart still racing. The dream just now felt incredibly real. He didn’t recognize the woman who was his mother, but what made him tremble was that he recognized the man who had caused his eyes to become crossed.

"No... it can’t be... they... my biological parents... no way, I won’t accept this reality... I won’t," Dennis screamed in his head.

[I am sorry, Master. The timing may not be right, but I must say it... the man in your dream... your biological father... is the same man who is your wife’s adoptive father.]

"Shut up, Sami... shut up... I won’t admit it... shut up," Dennis said in his head, gripping his head with both hands.

[Your mother owed a massive debt to the hospital and you were used as collateral. You weren’t kidnapped; you were used as security when your mother borrowed money from an unofficial financial organization in Ruby City.]

"I said shut up," Dennis screamed in his head.

[Forgive me, Master.]

Dennis’s mind fell into chaos. In the first dream, he had indeed heard a scary-faced man saying he hadn’t been ransomed, and now he finally understood. The "ransom" didn’t mean he was kidnapped; it meant he was collateral. Then, everything Daisy Number Seven had shown him returned to poison his brain. He clearly saw the man who was Daisy’s adoptive father doing all those things to Daisy’s sister and to Daisy herself. It made him shake because his feelings were piling up: that man was the biological father who had refused to acknowledge him.

Seeing Dennis looking so distraught, with tears streaming down even as his eyes were wide and his mouth hung open, Daisy stood up and immediately hugged him. This snapped Dennis back to reality, and he hugged Daisy back tightly, sobbing uncontrollably. Eventually, the two of them sank slowly to the floor, locked in an embrace. Dennis screamed and wailed in grief while clinging to Daisy, who kept stroking the back of his head and holding him tight.
