Chapter 109: Back to Emerald Academy

After the meeting, they were finally allowed to go home. Dennis, Daisy, Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly immediately said their goodbyes to Gerald, Kamala, and Rachel’s team. Then, Luke and Noah drove the six of them back to their school in their school’s hunter truck. Since the roads were empty and quiet, they reached their own school gates in just ten minutes. Dennis, Daisy, Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly hopped down from the back and walked toward the front.

"That’s it then, we’re heading back," said Luke, sitting in the driver’s seat with his hand on the wheel, raising one hand and flashing a smile.

"Alright, Luke. Thanks for the ride," Gary said.

"You’re welcome. We’re off. See you again," Luke replied with a smile, as did Noah, who sat next to him, pushing up his glasses and smiling at them.

The truck sped off again to return to Red Wind, leaving Dennis, Daisy, Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly standing in front of their gate, watching the truck turn and leave a red glow from its taillights behind. Then, the six of them walked to the gate, and several students on guard duty opened the doors while asking where they had been and what had happened.

The six of them gave a brief account of what had happened and headed inside. When they reached the school building, they saw many 11th graders—who were part of their unit—on guard duty in front of the doors, looking clean and refreshed. As soon as they saw the six arrive, they immediately swarmed their core leadership team with all sorts of questions. Seeing this, Dennis simply backed away and leaned against the wall, acting indifferent and ignoring his surroundings; besides, no one was bothering to talk to him anyway.

Daisy, noticing Dennis pulling away, quickly excused herself from her friends. She backed off slowly and stood leaning against the wall right next to Dennis. Then, she took his hand and looked at him with a smile.

"Are you okay, honey?" Daisy asked.

"I’m fine, I just thought it was better to stay out of the way," Dennis answered, smiling at his wife.

"Yeah, I understand. I’ll just stay here with you," Daisy replied, smiling back.

Dennis brushed his wife’s hair aside and looked at her neck again. He stroked the bandage on Daisy’s neck before covering it back up with her hair. Then, Daisy reached up, peeled off the bandage, and tucked it into her pocket.

"Why did you take it off? Is it really all healed up?" Dennis asked.

"Yeah, it’s healed. No need for a bandage anymore," Daisy answered, staring at the swarm of 11th graders crowding around Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly in front of her.

"About that guy... you’re really okay now, right?" Dennis asked.

"I’m okay... what about you?" Daisy asked.

"I don’t feel anything anymore either... just empty. It’s like something scooped out everything inside my heart and threw it away. Maybe it’s because my questions, my anger, my hate, and even my fear are all gone," Dennis answered, touching his chest.

"Yep... same. I feel the exact same way. I feel light, like I finally dropped a backpack full of rocks I didn’t even realize I was carrying. Though I probably can’t be away from you for a while... I need you to fill the part of my heart that’s missing," Daisy replied, hugging Dennis’s arm.

"Yeah, we’ll fill the void for each other and live happily," Dennis replied, putting his arm around his wife.

"That’s right, honey," Daisy replied, smiling as she wrapped her arms around Dennis’s waist and rested her head on his chest.

Then Dennis turned to see Steve approaching him and Daisy. He immediately let go of the hug and stepped forward to face Steve, with Daisy standing right by his side.

"Can you two come inside with me for a moment?" Steve asked.

"Yes, sir," Dennis and Daisy answered.

They went into the nearest classroom. Dennis and Daisy each grabbed a chair and placed them in front of Steve, who also pulled up a seat for himself. After the three of them sat down,

"A detective came by earlier to give the school a report about you two. Are you alright? May I hear what happened directly from you?" Steve asked.

"What was the detective’s name, sir?" Dennis asked.

"Raymond. He met with me and explained everything, which is why I’m talking to you now," Steve replied.

Dennis turned to look at Daisy, who was also looking at him. Then, they recounted everything that had happened to Steve in great detail. Steve nodded as he listened, his arms folded across his chest, never once interrupting their story. Steve’s face remained calm since he had already heard the police report and was simply confirming their version, which was clearly more detailed than the official account.

After Dennis and Daisy finished talking, Steve sat in silence for a moment. Then, he leaned forward and placed a hand on both of their shoulders.

"I am truly grateful that you two are alright and made it back here in one piece. Leave everything else to the authorities. According to Detective Raymond, the police are now patrolling every district in the city to see if the person you caught didn’t jump here from Aquamarine alone and is taking advantage of the current situation to carry out their plans," Steve said.

"I see, sir. So that means the city isn’t just busy fending off crawlers now, but also hunting down escaped lifers," Dennis replied.

"That’s about right, and they’ll be doing it for three days, starting today as day one," Steve replied.

"Turned out to be a major problem, didn’t it," Daisy muttered.

"Well, of course, but hey... the important thing is that you’re safe and sound. Leave everything else to the police. We help them by wiping out the crawlers that interfere with their investigation," Steve replied with a relaxed smile.

"True, sir. I agree," Dennis replied, smiling.

"Then, I heard from your unit, the 11th graders, that the two of you defeated a Claw Centipede—just the two of you without any help from the others, is that right? I was shocked because the students brought back hard shell fragments from the Claw Centipede’s body, including Kimberly, whose bag looked stuffed when I saw her being swarmed earlier," Steve replied with a smile.

"Sorry, sir. We acted without thinking when we saw two people in danger, and our actions ended up putting everyone at risk. Again, I’m sorry," Dennis said, bowing his head.

"Yes, Theo and Oscar. I’ve already chewed them both out; their actions really could have gotten everyone killed. Besides, I never expected an S-rank Claw Centipede to show up in your area," Steve muttered with a serious look on his face.

"I also gave them a piece of my mind, sir. The Claw Centipede was actually about to leave before that happened. But I’m sorry, sir—we just acted on our own," Daisy added.

"You weren’t in the wrong. It was reckless, sure, but your actions were correct. I just didn’t expect you to actually be able to defeat it and bring such an advantage to your team. So for this time, I won’t make an issue of it since everyone is okay. But next time, please do things by the book and follow the lessons you’ve been given for the sake of your own lives," Steve said with a serious expression while staring at the two of them.

Dennis and Daisy looked at each other, then Steve asked them both to explain what they had been doing. Dennis immediately told his version as sensibly as possible, making sure it wasn’t the actual version that revealed Daisy’s multiple personalities or the true extent of their power. Steve asked questions every now and then, and Dennis and Daisy answered as best they could without giving away their secrets.

After the Q&A session ended, Steve gave them permission to head back out to their guard post at the front gate with the others. The two immediately excused themselves and left the room. Once they were out, they both let out a sigh of relief and looked at each other with a smile. Then, they walked toward the building exit hand in hand.

"Good thing we were able to explain everything, honey," Daisy said.

"Yeah, you’re right. We need to be careful next time," Dennis replied.

"Yep, exactly. I don’t want the six people inside me to be discovered by anyone else," Daisy replied, looking down and squeezing Dennis’s hand.

"I understand. Don’t worry, we won’t get caught, but we really shouldn’t stand out so much next time," Dennis said.

"Yeah, this is all because of those two—it’s honestly ridiculous," Daisy muttered, clearly annoyed.

"Let it go, you already gave them a piece of your mind," Dennis replied, placing a hand on his wife’s head.

"Yeah, I know, I’m just still frustrated," Daisy replied.

They walked out of the school building together. Dennis opened his interface screen and re-read his skills. He looked at the Dimensional Training Room Manager skill he had just acquired; he immediately smiled and began reading the description to study it as they walked toward the guard post out front.
