Chapter 30: Chapter 30 Bai Qian
Chapter 30 -30 Bai Qian
Wang Zijia furrowed his brow and said, “It would be excellent if you could find the most unfortunate ones, those with disabilities, preferably ones who have been here for a long time.”
Since he was trying to find someone to serve him, suffering was necessary to ignite a sense of empathy and gratitude.
“Eh!” The manager grew nervous upon hearing Wang Zijia’s words.
“Hm? Is there a problem?” Wang Zijia looked at him with curiosity.
“Immortal Elder, if you are looking for someone to serve you, you could select anyone from our lot. After all, given a choice, who would willingly choose to be a mortal?” The manager hesitated, looking nervous as he cautiously added, “For other purposes, however, you might want to look in the Tooth Trade.”
Wang Zijia raised his eyebrows in surprise. He looked at him, impressed by his courage to speak his mind even after recognizing Wang Zijia’s true identity.
It would seem that those who worked at the orphanage or the resettlement didn’t have poor spirits, despite their age.
The manager grew more nervous under Wang Zijia’s gaze and hurriedly explained, “Our rules dictate that our charges are to be trained to become good people in Luofan Town. We also can’t guarantee when we may fall on hard times, making us attractive to certain lone Immortal Elders. . .”
“Enough, you don’t need to pressure me. Do you think I would come here in these clothes to buy a person for use in some inhuman research like a Devil Cultivator?” Wang Zijia cut him off with a wave of his hand.
“Then… ”
“Of course, I am here to find someone to serve. If you are suspicious, you can record the transaction publicly. The Law Enforcement Team can come to my Courtyard and check.” Wang Zijia stared at him, responding bluntly.
The manager looked stunned, then quickly relaxed and whispered, “A boy or a girl?”
“Either, I am not particular.”
“The more miserable, the better?”
Wang Zijia, with his hands folded behind his back, looked at the kids in the courtyard and responded, “The more miserable, the better. Only by enduring the sufferings of Mortal World can one truly appreciate and enjoy freedom.”
The manager looked thoughtful, less sycophantic, and more respectful upon hearing these words.
He led Wang Zijia to another courtyard. They passed through various rooms where they saw several children with missing limbs.
“These children are new arrivals in the last couple of days. Although their injuries were healed by the Immortal Elders, their disabilities are permanent.”
Wang Zijia looked around. Many of the children indeed exuded a sense of misery, with their dull eyes devoid of any hope.
However, Wang Zijia remained silent. The manager appeared hesitant, then led him to the backyard of the courtyard, pointing to a corner.
This corner was stark in comparison to the rest of the place. It was littered with weeds and appeared deserted.
A little girl, with her back toward them, sat in one corner of the courtyard, lost in her thoughts.
The setting sun cast a golden light around them. The clamor and laughter from the neighboring courtyard seemed to highlight the isolation of this forgotten corner even more.
Wang Zijia advanced towards the girl. On getting closer, he discovered that she had lost most of her right arm, and her left hand was also severely damaged. On seeing her face, he was taken aback.
Her eyes, which should have been full of innocence, were vacant. They were a horrifying sight with twisted muscles visible inside.
Her small face bore various cuts, and one of her ears was missing. If seen in the dark, one could easily mistake her for a ghost.
“This child should have been sent away a while ago, but I was concerned that even in Luofan Town, she would not receive proper care. So, I broke the rules and kept her here,” the manager explained, noting Wang Zijia’s stunned expression.
Wang Zijia, however, seemed unconcerned with the rules. He looked at the girl, especially her numb expression, with satisfaction.
Don’t get him wrong. He wasn’t a psychological deviant who took pleasure in the sufferings of the child. It was simply that he was on the lookout for someone utterly loyal to him.
A beacon of hope in hell was what most people remembered their entire lives!
“How did she end up like this?” Wang Zijia asked, his brows furrowed as he observed the scars on her body, clearly indicative of abuse.
“Ah!” The manager sighed and explained, “I had it investigated. This poor child has indeed suffered immense misfortune. I heard she was the bloodline of an Immortal Elder, and the only hope of her family.”
“Her parents met with a mishap while they were away seeking opportunities. They were followed back to their home. Whoever did this probably didn’t find what they were looking for and intended to extract that information from the girl.”
“When the incident came to the attention of the Law Enforcement Team, it was already too late. If it weren’t for the spirit pill given by an Immortal Elder, she would have likely not survived.”
Suddenly, the manager mysteriously continued, “After that incident, the Law Enforcement Team interrogated the culprits, raided her house but found nothing valuable, and then sent her here.”
Wang Zijia shot a meaningful glance at the manager, intrigued by this sudden shift in conversation and said, “You do have a fair amount of scheming in you, with quite a bit of daring to boot.”
“Hehe, I would like to take that as a compliment from the Immortal Elder.” The manager chuckled at this.
“Alright, let’s take her.” Wang Zijia made his decision.
Based on what he knew, there were numerous methods to heal physical injuries using Cultivation arts. So, her injuries weren’t something that couldn’t be treated. At least, curing the girl of her injuries wouldn’t be too difficult, and there were ample methods to deal with bloodline variations amongst cultivators.
“This…”, the manager hesitated, “Immortal Elder, she may not be willing…”
Wang Zijia looked perplexed for a moment as he examined the girl. Then he said, “Since she is one of our descendants and has gone through so much, she is probably not completely ignorant. Would you like to come with me?”
She was motionless, as if she hadn’t heard him.
“Immortal Elder, she…”, the manager began to explain. Still, Wang Zijia interrupted him.
“Would you like to see the world once again, and maybe… start cultivating?” Wang Zijia asked her again.
The previously impassive girl abruptly looked up, instinctively turning her empty eye sockets to stare at Wang Zijia.
“It seems she is willing.” Wang Zijia said impassively. “What’s your name?”
“I don’t have one.” The girl finally answered, her voice melodious but tinged with a desolation that didn’t suit her youth.
Wang Zijia paused at her response, looked at her, and with a touch of tease in his voice, said, “In that case, you shall be called Bai Qian from now onwards. Strive to make a name for yourself known across the four seas.”
The girl didn’t respond, which he took as consent.
“So, can I take her away now?” After deciding, Wang Zijia looked at the manager.
“Of course, of course! It is her good fortune to be in the service of an Immortal Elder.” The manager gleefully replied.
Upon hearing that, Wang Zijia took out a gold nugget. However, the manager refused to accept it, saying “Immortal Elders don’t pay to take a person away from this place!”

Wang Zijia casually responded, “Consider it a donation to the orphanage then!”
However, the manager remained resolute and refused.
Wang Zijia looked at him, then at the girl, and chuckled, “You certainly are quite cunning. If I truly wanted to buy someone, I wouldn’t come to you. You can report it however you like, for I am Wang Zijia of the Wanyu Pavilion.”
“Alright then!” The manager seemed relieved and grinned fawningly.
