My Roleplay System-Chapter 230: The Demon’s Sister
Lake stared at the group that had finally caught up to him, Sylph hovering at their forefront. A familiar, sinking feeling settled in his gut.
’So much for avoiding trouble.’
For a wild second, he considered simply grabbing Lilia and bolting. But that would only agitate the creature currently latched onto his arm, and the ensuing scene would guarantee the very confrontation he’d hoped to avoid.
There was no hiding now. With a resigned sigh, he caught Sylph’s eye—her presence already drawing curious looks from the passing crowd—and gestured subtly toward a quieter spot beneath a nearby tree. Sylph had a look of understanding as she nodded her head rapidly before zipping over instantly, a blur of green.
Kate and the others were quick to follow, converging on the shaded bench where Sylph had landed. All their eyes still remained fixed on him, a mix of caution, frustration, and stark curiosity burning in their gazes.
"Hm?"
Lilia felt Lake’s pause and glanced up at him. Following his line of sight, her eyes landed on the small assembly of first-years. Her gaze swept over them—lingering for a fraction of a second on Sylph—and a spark of recognition lit within her. A mischievous, knowing smile curved her lips.
Lake saw that smile and couldn’t help but sigh. The situation was officially out of his hands. Taking a breath, he squared his shoulders and steered a still-clinging Lilia toward the waiting group.
They stopped a few paces away, with the passing crowd casting curious glances their way; most of them recognizing Kate and the others as key figures of the first year exam. The remaining first years that had followed so far had taken a step back, leaving only Kate, Iris, and Bramble to confront him but kept their ears perked up as they observed from a distances.
"..." The silence between them was thick as everyone’s attention fell on Lake and the unknown women he had his arms linked with.
Kate’s eyes narrowed, her earlier anger resurfacing at the sight of him.
"So," She began, her voice smooth and sharp as a blade. A cold, polite smile forming on her face. "Is this the important task you had to take care of instead of the exam?"
"Nope," Lake replied simply, a small smile forming on his face instinctively as he met her gaze without flinching. The single word did nothing to soften the ice in Kate’s expression, and his casual smile only made it worse.
Seeing the tension tighten, Lilia’s smile only widened. She gave Lake’s arm another squeeze, pressing her body against him as she stepped into the fray with effortless grace. "Lake, don’t be rude," she chided playfully. "Aren’t you going to introduce me to your classmates?"
Lake casted a sideways glance at her, sensing something was off but still continued. "Right..." He nodded before gesturing with his hands toward the fairy twins. "This is Iris and Bramble. They’re part of the cross-race exchange program and are twins."
Lilia glanced their way, noting in particular their striking appearance. Sky blue hair and eyes with translucent wings hued in a tint of blue s well.
"A pleasure to meet you, miss," Bramble said, offering his trademark charming smile. Iris only gave her a glance over with a quiet, skeptical huff, her arms still folded.
Lake continued with his introductions, gesture shifting to the composed girl beside them. "This is Kate. She’s..." Lake paused for a moment, contemplating what to say before his smile soften somewhat, "She’s been a huge help to me the last few months."
Kate gave Lake a somewhat surprised look. She felt weird seeing him smile like that and couldn’t help but freeze up slightly. Unable to react in time, she just gave a simple nod.
Lilia smiled even brighter as she noted Kate’s strange reaction before her eyes naturally trailed to the last person, sitting on the bench with a curious face.
"And this is Sylph." Lake stated flatly.
"Hm? Aren’t you going to say more?" Lilia shot a glance at Lake, a questioning tone in her voice.
"There is no need," Lake replied, his tone leaving no room for argument.
’What else is there to say?’ he thought. ’She’s just Sylph.’
"Is that so?" Lilia tilted her head as her eyes returned to the green fairy.
Sylph looked up to meet her gaze and offered Lilia a small, yet bright smile as she hummed. "Nice to meet you!"
"Its nice to meet you as well."
After having introducing everyone, their gaze naturally turned to the woman beside him.
"As for the one beside me," Lake began, but Lilia smoothly cut him off.
"Hello!" she chirped, her voice sweet as honey as it attracted the gaze of everyone. "I’m Lilia, Lake’s girlfriend. It’s so lovely to meet you all!"
"???"
There was a moment of confused silent, everyone still taking their time to process her words, but the moment it did a ripple of pure shock went through the group.
"HUH?!"
Nearby, the loud exclaims of the spectating students rang out, drawing a frown out of Lake as he turned to give them a look, shutting them up immediately.
As for the three people in front of him, their gazes snapped between Lilia’s beaming face to Lake’s frown back and forth, as if seeking a confirmation.
Lake pinched the bridge of his nose, a long-sigh escaping his lips. "Ignore her. This is my sister, Lilia Egoven."
A collective, almost audible release of breath swept through Iris, Bramble, and Kate. Understanding replaced shock, though a residue of bewilderment remained.
The nearby students upon hearing Lake’s clarification had a somewhat deflated expression, as if they had lost some great opportunity, but they quickly recovered, a burning passion rising in their eyes.
Lilia giggled, the sound light and unrepentant at everyone’s varied reactions.
"My apologies! I simply couldn’t resist teasing you all."
She apologized, but her eyes remained sharp as they carefully scanned everyone’s reaction.
"Hmm?" Her gaze lingered longest on Sylph, whose expression hadn’t shifted an iota from the original clueless smile she had shown her before.
’Is it really just a rumor that their dating?’ She inwardly questioned but didn’t linger longer on the matter.
"I’m sorry about her," Lake grumbled, shooting a sidelong glance at his sister. "This thing here is my older sister."
"Hmm?" Lilia’s smile suddenly turned dangerous. "Who are you calling a ’thing,’ dear brother?"
"You must have misheard."
"Is that so?" Her hand shot out, fingers finding his side in a sharp pinch. However, it met the resistance of what felt like tempered steel, doing no apparent damage. Lake didn’t even flinch as the two of them continued to smile while looking forward.
The group looked on in stunned silence at the bizarre, sibling antagonism playing out before them. Kate paused for a moment seeing the sight, the strange feeling in her chest growing stronger. She closed her mouth, deciding, for now, to simply watch.
"So," An irritated voice came out from Iris’ mouth, "where were you?"
"Hm?" Lake glanced over, noticing her cold gaze. "What do you mean?"
"For the exams. Why weren’t you there?" She pressed further.
"I had other matters to attend to." He offered no further explanation.
"...Do you expect me to believe that crap?"
"I don’t know what else to say. I really did have other things to do that day." Lake gave a slight shrug, unperturbed by her hostility.
"Y-You...!"
Just as Iris seemed ready to lunge, Lilia smoothly interjected.
"Hey, since you’re all here, would you like to join us and explore the festival?" she asked, her invitation casual enough to draw surprised glances.
"Huh? Why would I—" Iris started, but Bramble quickly cut her off.
"Will that be all right with you?" he asked Lilia, his tone suggesting he’d picked up on something the others hadn’t.
"Wait, what are you—" Iris tried again.
"Yep. I’d love to get to know my dear little brother’s friends a bit better," Lilia replied with a polished smile.
"Then I’m sorry for the intrusion."
The exchange between Bramble and Lilia happened so swiftly and seamlessly that it left no opening for anyone else to speak—as though the two shared a secret, unspoken understanding.
"Y-You... wah... huh?"
Iris, cut off twice in a row, lapsed into baffled silence, her anger diffusing into confusion as she stared blankly between them.
"Hm? Are you still not feeling well, Sis? Do you want to head back and rest for the day?" Bramble asked, his face a mask of sincere concern.
His worry, however, didn’t seem to comfort her. Instead, she frowned, struck by the nagging suspicion that she was being played—even if she couldn’t pinpoint how.
"N-No, I’m fine."
"Really? You can always rest if you’re unwell. It must have been quite an ordeal," Lilia added, mirroring Bramble’s tone of gentle worry.
’What is this? This strange feeling I get when both of them speak...’ Iris thought to herself, but she forced a nod anyway.
"There’s no need to worry. I can at least walk around this much."
"Is that so? Then shall we go?" Lilia said, already beginning to steer the group forward, her arm still firmly linked with Lake’s.
As their small entourage set off, they naturally drew the attention of visitors and students alike.
Soon, pictures were already spreading across the online student forums, sparking a fresh wave of gossip and speculation.
