My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill-Chapter 311
Something shifted in the room. The panic that had been building was transforming into determined focus.
"Satou trusted us to hold things together in his absence," Seraphina continued. "He knew this wouldn’t be easy. But he also knew we’re capable of handling it. And when he returns—" Her voice carried absolute certainty. "—when he returns, I intend to make sure there’s a settlement worth coming back to."
The speech resonated. Leaders who’d been feeling overwhelmed were now looking grimly determined.
"Dismissed," Seraphina said. "Everyone to your assignments. We reconvene at dawn for progress reports. Go."
The war room emptied quickly, commanders moving with renewed purpose despite the compressed timeline.
[Evening - The Northern Wall]
As sunset painted the sky in oranges and reds that filtered through the settlement’s buildings, Lyra found herself on the northern wall. She should be working—there were a thousand things demanding attention now that their timeline had compressed. But for just a moment, she allowed herself to stand and worry. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
Somewhere out there, miles away to the north, Satou was moving through hostile territory toward a target that could get him killed. The monastery was in enemy territory. The mission was dangerous under the best circumstances, and circumstances were rarely best.
Footsteps approached from behind. Lyra didn’t turn, recognizing the distinctive rhythm—confident steps that barely made sound despite the approaching person’s clear desire to be noticed.
Seraphina stopped beside her, also looking north toward the distant horizon where Satou had disappeared hours ago. For a long moment, neither spoke.
"You really care about him," Lyra said finally. It wasn’t a question.
"I’ve lived for centuries," Seraphina replied, her voice quieter than it had been in the war room. "Seen thousands of potential partners. Powerful demon lords, ancient beings, legendary warriors. None of them..." She trailed off, her usual confidence faltering slightly. "He’s different."
"Different how?" Lyra asked, genuine curiosity in her voice.
"Real. Authentic." Seraphina’s crimson eyes were distant, focused on something only she could see. "He’s not intimidated by my power or my position. Doesn’t see me as the Fourth Seat, doesn’t treat me like some dangerous weapon to be carefully handled. He sees me as Seraphina—as a person, not a title."
"Do you know how rare that is?" Seraphina continued, her voice carrying vulnerability she rarely showed. "Most beings either fear me or want to use me. Fear my power, want to harness it for their own goals. But Satou just... talks to me. Argues with me when he thinks I’m wrong. Treats me like an equal, like someone whose opinion matters but isn’t automatically correct."
Lyra understood that completely. "Everything she has just said was true , that’s basically satou" she said in her mind and then said outloud "he saw me as someone whose opinion mattered. Not because of strength or magic, but because of competence and intelligence. He made me feel valued."
"That’s what makes him dangerous," Seraphina said, though her tone was affectionate rather than critical. "He collects loyalty by being genuinely kind. By treating people like they matter. It’s completely instinctive—he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. Doesn’t understand that basic human decency is rare enough to inspire fierce devotion."
"And now we’re both in love with him," Lyra said quietly. "Along with Jessica. Three women who should probably be rivals competing for his attention."
"Should we be rivals?" Seraphina asked, genuine curiosity in her voice. She turned to look at Lyra directly. "Is that what you want?"
Lyra considered the question honestly. "Part of me wants to be. The territorial part that says he’s mine and resents sharing. The part that remembers I was there first, helped build this settlement from nothing, stood by him when he was just a hobgoblin trying to survive."
"But?" Seraphina prompted.
"But I also know Satou’s heart is big enough for all of us. And I know he needs all of us—Jessica’s compassion and healing, my tactical mind and administrative skills, your strength and centuries of experience. We make him better by being in his life." Lyra smiled slightly. "We make each other better too, probably. I’m learning military strategy from you. Jessica’s learning to be less naive about conflict. You’re learning that power isn’t the only thing that matters."
Seraphina was quiet for a moment, then laughed softly. "You’re more perceptive than I gave you credit for. And more generous than I deserve—I essentially barged into your relationship and claimed equal status."
"You love him," Lyra said simply. "Really love him, not just desire him or want to possess him. That’s clear in everything you do—the way you took command to protect his settlement, the way you’re worried about him now, the way you talked about him in the war room. You see him as a person worth protecting, not just a powerful ally or attractive partner."
"I do love him," Seraphina admitted. "More than I’ve loved anyone in... centuries, probably. And that terrifies me because love is a weakness. Something enemies can exploit. Something that makes you vulnerable."
"Love is also a strength," Lyra countered. "It’s why we’ll win this battle. Because we’re fighting for people we love, to protect things we care about. The humans are fighting because they were ordered to. That difference matters."
They stood together in companionable silence, watching the sunset paint the sky in deeper reds and purples.
"Does it bother you?" Seraphina asked eventually. "That I love him?"
Lyra considered honestly. "Sometimes. When I’m tired or scared or feeling territorial. But mostly? No. Because I see how you look at him, and I know it’s genuine. You’re not trying to replace Jessica and me. You just... want him in your life. However that works."
"I don’t want to replace you," Seraphina confirmed. "Either of you. I want to add to his life, not subtract from what he already has. And honestly?" She smiled slightly. "Having two intelligent, capable women who love him as much as I do means he’s less likely to do something stupidly brave and get himself killed. We can take turns yelling at him for taking unnecessary risks."
