My First Love Died, Now My Step Uncle Wants Me-Chapter 142: Bite Him
The words had barely left his mouth when Roy suddenly leaped from a nearby cabinet and pounced onto Caleb Rhodes.
Caleb yanked him off.
Ever since Caleb had locked the little guy in a dark box a few times, he had taken to launching these sneak attacks.
’He thought the little furball was a bit like Nina Wynn—obedient, adorable, small, and soft—so he usually let him get away with it.’
This wasn’t the first time!
Caleb dangled him by the scruff, his face stern. "Want to go back in the dark box?"
Dangling there, Roy’s paws flailed as he let out a few meows, as if trying to be cute.
Caleb’s heart softened. He fondly flicked the kitten’s small head and tossed him onto the counter. "Go play by yourself!"
Roy meowed at him twice, and seeing he was being ignored, turned to Rosalind Lowell.
The moment he saw Rosalind, he immediately arched his back and his fur stood on end, his posture full of hostility.
A flash of disgust crossed Rosalind’s eyes, but her face was a picture of a gentle smile. "What a cute little thing. If I weren’t a bit allergic to cat fur, I’d love to have one too."
As she spoke, she glanced at Caleb’s back, then at Warner Zimmerman’s.
Both men had their backs to her.
She shot Roy a disdainful look, then suddenly pinched him between two fingers, lifted him up, and placed him on her shoulder.
Then she screamed, "Don’t scratch me!"
Her face suddenly paled in terror as she shrieked, "Caleb, it’s scratching me! Get it off me!"
Caleb turned to look and saw Roy clinging to Rosalind’s shoulder, pawing at her with his little claws.
He frowned and was about to step forward when Rosalind suddenly ripped Roy off her and slammed him viciously onto the floor.
Roy was too small to withstand such violence and let out a pained shriek.
Caleb’s heart lurched, and he quickly moved forward to pick Roy up.
But just then, Rosalind, as if terrified, stumbled and threw herself at Caleb.
Her stiletto heel stabbed right into Roy. The kitten shrieked in agony, its small body thrashing on the floor.
Rosalind threw herself into Caleb’s arms and started crying, "Caleb, it scratched me! I’m so scared!"
"It suddenly jumped on me and started scratching me!"
As she spoke, she began to cough violently and scratched at her face a few times. "It’s so itchy! I’m having an allergic reaction!"
Just then, the door to the room flew open, and Nina Wynn appeared at the entrance.
Her eyes immediately fell on the screaming Roy on the floor. Her expression changed drastically, and she rushed forward.
"Roy!"
She picked Roy up from the floor and saw a bloody puncture wound in his stomach. Blood was also starting to trickle from his mouth.
Hearing Roy’s agonized cries, her voice cracked with anguish. "Roy!"
She snapped her head up, glaring viciously at Rosalind. "Was this you?"
Rosalind’s eyes were wide with terror, the rims red. "I didn’t mean to! It was scratching me!"
Nina stared at her, then suddenly lunged forward, grabbed Rosalind’s wrist, and bit down hard.
Rosalind, shocked that Nina would dare to attack her, jerked her hand back. "Ah! I didn’t mean to!"
But she couldn’t shake her off. Nina held on with a death grip, biting with desperate strength, as if she wanted to tear a piece of flesh from Rosalind’s arm.
Rosalind screamed in pain, "Let go! Caleb, make her let go!"
It all happened too fast, in less than a minute. Caleb hadn’t expected Nina to attack Rosalind either.
He stepped forward to pull Nina away, but she unexpectedly turned her head and bit his hand.
She quickly drew blood.
He stood perfectly still, watching her, his eyes dark. "Let go. Roy is injured. We need to get him to a vet immediately!"
Only then did Nina release him. Her chest heaved violently, her eyes brimming with tears she fought to hold back.
She glared at Rosalind, then looked back at Caleb, her voice devoid of its usual gentleness, replaced by a rare sharpness. "You’re in this together!"
Just then, Warner Zimmerman stepped forward and took Roy from Nina’s hands.
The wound on Roy’s stomach was still bleeding, and he writhed in pain in Warner’s palm.
Warner frowned. "His internal organs might be injured. We have to get him to a pet hospital right away!"
The moment he finished speaking, Nina snatched Roy back and bolted out the door.
Caleb stared after her disappearing figure, his voice sharp, "Nina!"
Nina didn’t look back, quickly vanishing from sight with Roy in her arms.
Seeing this, Warner grabbed a coat from the rack and followed her.
Caleb was about to go after them when Rosalind grabbed him. "Caleb, look at my hand!"
A fair, delicate hand was thrust in front of him. A deep, bloody ring of bite marks punctured the skin, bleeding freely.
It was obvious whoever bit her had done so with all their might, as if out of pure hatred.
Caleb’s brow furrowed tightly. He pulled out his phone. "Willson, come up here and take Rosalind to the hospital!"
Hearing this, Rosalind immediately burst into tears. "Caleb, no one has ever hurt me like this! Look at my hand, she almost bit down to the bone!"
"To hurt someone like this over a cat... She’s horrifying!"
It was true. The young miss had been put on a pedestal her whole life; when had she ever been hurt like this?
But right now, Caleb’s mind was filled with the image of Nina’s feral look and her eyes struggling to hold back tears.
He impatiently pulled away from Rosalind, his voice cold. "I’ll have Willson take you to the hospital."
With that, he turned to leave.
Rosalind suddenly brought a hand to her nose, took two sharp breaths, and began coughing violently. "Caleb, I... I don’t feel well..."
Caleb sensed something was wrong. He turned back and saw Rosalind’s face was beet red. She was clutching her throat, half-kneeling on the ground, and seemed to be struggling to breathe.
Moreover, a red rash was breaking out on her face. It looked like a severe allergic reaction.
He knew she’d been allergic to cats and dogs since childhood. Seeing her now, looking as if she were about to suffocate, he had no choice but to pick her up and carry her out. "I’ll take you to the hospital!"
Just as he lifted Rosalind, her hand went limp, and a small clump of cat fur fell from it.
She curved her lips into a faint smile and buried her head in Caleb’s chest.
As they reached the parking garage, he saw Warner Zimmerman driving out of the exit.
Through the windshield, he could clearly see Nina holding Roy, her eyes terribly red, as if she’d been crying.
His heart clenched painfully, and his steps grew heavy.
Just then, the car drove past him. Nina looked up, her gaze falling on Rosalind in his arms for just an instant before she averted her eyes.
Her eyes were terribly red and misty, as if filled with unshed tears.
Caleb stopped in his tracks, staring at the car’s taillights for a while, his eyes dark and somber.
He suddenly said, "Willson, you take Miss Lowell to the hospital."
With that, he strode over to his car, placed Rosalind in a seat, and turned to leave.
Rosalind grabbed his clothes, refusing to let go, her voice barely a whisper. "Caleb..."
