My First Love Died, Now My Step Uncle Wants Me-Chapter 138: The Wrong Room
Rosalind Lowell smoothed her hair, her fingers stroking her face in a seemingly casual gesture. She smiled a little shyly. "Caleb and I agreed to keep it private at the time. Besides, we’re back in the country now and don’t plan on living abroad long-term anymore, so we just considered that null and void."
After a pause, she sighed softly and added, "But Caleb is so busy right now, and my health isn’t the best, so we’ll probably have to postpone it. Still, we’ve been like this for so many years. Whether we have a marriage certificate or not, it’s all the same. Everyone knows about us, anyway."
As she spoke, she patted Nina Wynn’s hand. "In families like ours, all eyes are on us. The slightest little thing gets spread around. Now that you’re with Caleb, you have to be discreet about these things, you understand?"
Her jade-like fingers were beautiful, but the glint of silver on her middle finger stung Nina’s eyes.
She looked away and hugged Roy tighter, her voice soft. "I’m a little tired, Miss Lowell. I’d like to rest."
Just then, Roy stirred in Nina’s arms and let out a small meow.
Only then did Rosalind notice the little cat in Nina’s arms was a mutt. You could tell just by looking at it.
She frowned. "Why would you keep a little mutt like this? They have so many problems, and they’re not even good-looking."
With that, she reached out, grabbed the cat, and dangled it in the air, pinching it between two fingers. "And it’s shedding everywhere!" she said with disgust.
The kitten, suspended in mid-air, cried out in pain.
Nina’s heart ached for him. She lunged forward, snatched Roy back, and held him tightly in her arms. "He doesn’t shed much. I brush him every day."
Rosalind’s expression shifted, a flash of annoyance in her eyes.
At that moment, Warner Zimmerman came in, handing Nina a freshly brewed bowl of medicine. "It’s time for your medicine. The Third Lord Master said you’re not to leave a single drop."
Nina frowned and mumbled, "It’s so bitter!"
Warner Zimmerman shot a casual glance at Rosalind, her face expressionless as she said, "You have to drink it no matter how bitter it is. You need to be healthy to have the energy to deal with troublesome people and matters."
Rosalind missed the hidden meaning in her words and frowned. "This whole room is full of cat hair. Butler Zimmerman, why haven’t you dealt with this? Look, there’s more hair floating in the air."
She picked up two strands of cat fur with her fingertips, her tone dripping with disgust. "Don’t you know Caleb is a neat freak? Don’t be bringing random filthy things into the house!"
Nina’s face fell, and her voice turned cold. "Roy is not a random filthy thing. And the room was just vacuumed. It’s very clean."
Rosalind glanced at her and lifted her chin. "I’m speaking to the butler. Don’t interrupt. She’s been with Caleb for a long time. How can she not understand something so simple!"
Warner Zimmerman impassively collected the empty medicine bowl, her voice devoid of emotion. "The Third Lord Master is the one who said she could have the cat. I’m afraid your concern is misplaced, Miss Lowell."
Rosalind’s face grew even darker. "Impossible. Caleb is a neat freak; he would never agree to keeping a cat. Besides, I’m a little allergic to cat hair. It’s fine to keep the cat here for a few days, but don’t bring it back to Elysian City."
She shot the kitten a scornful look. "If you must have a pet, at least pick a decent breed."
Nina hugged Roy tighter and said in a low voice, "When you get a pet, all that matters is that you like it. The breed is not important."
With that, she started walking toward the bedroom. "I’d like to rest. Miss Lowell, please make yourself at home."
However, just as she opened the bedroom door, Rosalind said, "That’s the master bedroom. Are you sure you’re not in the wrong room?"
Nina stopped in her tracks, her body stiffening.
From the very first day, she had lived with Caleb Rhodes. Although she had her own room, Caleb didn’t allow her to sleep alone.
Even if she sometimes fell asleep on her own, he would carry her back to his room when he returned in the middle of the night.
She had gotten so used to it that she had forgotten: in the eyes of an outsider, she should be going to her own room.
And now, the rightful lady of the house had arrived. The master bedroom should belong to Rosalind.
Her face turned pale, overcome by a powerful sense of shame, as if she’d been caught stealing something that belonged to someone else.
’Even though I was forced at first, didn’t I get used to it later?’
’And worse, I used it to make a deal with Caleb Rhodes! How shameful!’
Her heart ached. She turned and, clutching Roy, walked toward the guest bedroom.
Rosalind’s expression flickered, and she raised her voice. "Butler Zimmerman, why aren’t you keeping a closer eye on Caleb’s room? Is it a place just anyone can enter? And he’s a neat freak. Cats are absolutely not allowed in there."
Nina was about to enter the room when she heard this. Her hand froze on the doorknob, and she said in a low voice, "Miss Lowell, the Third Lord Master gave me permission to live here. And he never said I couldn’t go into his room. As for Roy, he was a gift from him."
After saying this, she herself was stunned.
Although Rosalind had stepped on her foot once, she felt that by sleeping with her man, they were now even.
She shouldn’t have targeted her so sharply.
Still, she had no intention of apologizing. Rosalind had bullied her cat first!
Rosalind’s face changed, and just as she was about to speak, Caleb Rhodes walked in.
He wore a long black coat, snowflakes still melting on the fabric, and brought a gust of cold air with him as he appeared at the door.
Seeing Rosalind, his brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
Before he could speak, Rosalind rushed to greet him.
Like a doting wife, she took the coat Caleb had just removed, hung it up, and then smiled gently. "I’m a bit allergic to cat hair. I saw Nina had a cat and just asked about it. I didn’t realize it would make her so unhappy."
Caleb’s gaze had been locked on Nina from the moment he walked in.
Without sparing Rosalind a glance, he began unfastening his watch and said coolly, "She hasn’t been feeling well these past few days, so she has a bit of a temper."
Rosalind seethed with frustration, but the smile on her face remained exceptionally gentle.
She took the watch and handed it to Warner Zimmerman, then tried to take Caleb’s arm. "It’s normal for a young girl to be a little feisty. It’s fine. If she likes having a cat, then let her. I have a friend with some expensive breeds; I can pick out a couple for her."
Before she could finish, the sound of a door SLAMMING shut echoed through the room.
Caleb’s eyes darkened. He stared at the closed door, smoothly sidestepping Rosalind’s hand, and said coolly, "I’ll go check on her."
Rosalind’s smile was a bit strained. "Maybe I upset her. Why don’t I leave for now? You can apologize to her for me. I didn’t mean any harm."
Walking toward the door, Caleb replied nonchalantly, "No need. You should stay. I’ll need your help with something in a little while."
Rosalind watched his back as he entered the room, wanting to follow.
But Caleb was tall and his strides were long. Before she even reached the doorway, the door closed.
Then, with a CLICK, it was locked.
Nina sat on the edge of the bed, clutching Roy. Her head was bowed, and she neither spoke nor looked at Caleb.
Caleb leaned down and kissed her hair, then lifted her onto his lap. "Upset?"
Nina didn’t speak, struggling to get off his lap.
But instead, Caleb lifted her chin, and a commanding kiss pressed against hers.
