My Fiancé's Scandals Never End, So I Married His Uncle Instead-Chapter 92: Official Announcement in Port Sovereign
Silas Norwood didn’t even need to weigh his options or hesitate. "The person."
At their level, they no longer needed to use marriage alliances to consolidate their positions. Family status was, in fact, unimportant. Silas Norwood didn’t quite understand why Kian Sterling would ask such a question.
Kian Sterling scoffed, unconvinced. "When the marriage was swapped, you and Cece had barely even crossed paths..."
Silas Norwood cut him off coolly. "We had met several times before that."
Not only had they met, but the circumstances had been rather intimate. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been enough to make him act on impulse, especially after being so picky all these years and dragging things out to his current age.
From Silas’s somewhat inscrutable expression, Kian Sterling guessed that these so-called meetings weren’t so simple—at least for Silas, they must have left a deep impression. He suddenly understood how a man of Silas Norwood’s stature could have agreed to trade himself for a dozen or so projects back then.
’Prioritizing benefits? Putting himself on the line for the deal? This man had probably set his sights on Cece long ago.’
The room fell silent once more. The two calculating men stared at each other, their expressions unreadable.
After a long moment, Kian Sterling gently clinked his glass against Silas’s. "I’ll give you an answer tomorrow."
Silas Norwood returned to the bedroom that had been converted from a study.
Kian Sterling glanced at his watch. It was past midnight, but he felt no desire to sleep. Registering the marriage early wasn’t a big deal—it wasn’t even a deal at all, really—yet it had him lighting up two cigarettes in a row, his eyes darker than the night sky.
He finally got up, deciding to go to the living room to feel the city’s night breeze.
As he opened his door and passed by Celia Sterling’s bedroom, he noticed a faint sliver of light coming from the slightly ajar door.
Kian Sterling paused, then gently pushed Celia Sterling’s door open.
Celia Sterling was still tossing and turning in bed.
Evidently, that long, passionate kiss tonight had made a powerful impact not only on Silas Norwood, but on her as well.
"CLICK!"
With a faint sound, the lights in the room brightened. Celia Sterling poked her head out from the puffy duvet, her almond-shaped eyes looking at the doorway in surprise. "Kian, what are you doing?"
"It’s so late and you’re still not asleep. If your head isn’t clear tomorrow, you won’t be able to absorb the knowledge from those senior experts. Don’t come crying to me then." Kian Sterling scolded her in a low voice, adopting the authoritative tone of a parent.
Celia Sterling coughed lightly. "I’m going to sleep now."
Kian Sterling didn’t leave right away.
His sharp gaze swept over her face. Her makeup was still on, but the lipstick she had deliberately reapplied at the hotel entrance was completely gone. And on her neck, there was a very faint mark.
Sensing his scrutiny, Celia Sterling buried her head in the duvet, slightly annoyed. "What are you looking at?"
Kian Sterling withdrew his gaze. "Silas Norwood just proposed registering the marriage early. What do you think, Cece?"
Celia Sterling let out a small "oh." "I’ll do whatever you think is best."
"You’re a grown woman. Don’t you have your own opinion?" Kian Sterling said coolly. "I’m asking what you truly want. Do you, or don’t you?"
From under the covers, Celia Sterling was silent for a few seconds before giving a rather embarrassed "mhm."
Kian Sterling now had his answer.
He reached out and turned off the light. "I understand. Go to sleep."
He turned and gently closed the door behind him.
The next morning, Silas Norwood accompanied Celia Sterling to the Lowell Estate.
Celia Sterling was wearing the simple, lightweight sweatsuit that Silas Norwood had casually picked out for her. Paired with a neat high ponytail and stylish sneakers, she looked a bit out of place at the perfumed and elegantly dressed gathering, but her outfit was the most comfortable choice for sitting through long lectures.
As before, her fingers were intertwined with Silas Norwood’s.
After last night’s intimacy, the aura between them had become even more harmonious. They walked into the hotel’s underground parking garage, talking and laughing. While waiting for the car, Silas Norwood lowered his head and spoke to her gently:
"I’ve already had Theo Chambers send a formal visiting card to the Lowell Family. I’ll go in with you in a bit, but I’ll probably have to deal with some networking, so I might not be able to sit with you through the lectures, Cece."
"It’s not like you’d understand it anyway." Celia Sterling knew that since he was new here, it was only proper for him to exchange a few pleasantries with President Adeline Lowell of the Lowell Family. "I’ll find you after the lecture."
Assistant Thorne had also accompanied them to Port Sovereign. He backed a low-key luxury business van out of its parking spot, respectfully opened the doors for Celia Sterling and Silas Norwood, and drove them to the Lowell Estate. Along the way, Silas and Celia interacted as they usually did, but Assistant Thorne faintly sensed that things were different from their time on the cruise ship.
On the cruise, there had been a sense of approachability yet distance between them. He remembered his boss had to go to great lengths just to coax her into his arms for a hug, even arranging a whole fishing scenario to help things along.
This time was different. As soon as they got in the car, Miss Sterling leaned into the boss’s arms as if it were the most natural thing in the world, chatting intimately with him. The boss’s hands weren’t as restrained as before, either. In just the first ten minutes or so after the car started, he had already smoothed Miss Sterling’s hair several times, his movements incredibly gentle.
’The boss certainly understands the art of gradual progression.’
A look of gratification appeared in Assistant Thorne’s eyes. He thought about how Theo Chambers had been complaining to him for years that the boss was clueless, and how the position of the chairman’s wife had been vacant for so long. He had the sudden urge to snap a photo and send it to Chief Assistant Chambers. But he only managed two extra glances in the rearview mirror before his eyes met the boss’s indifferent gaze.
It was as if the gentleness he had just displayed was a mere illusion.
Assistant Thorne silently raised the privacy partition, not daring to look again.
Over half an hour later, they finally arrived at the Lowell Estate.
The estate was already buzzing with activity. Adeline Lowell was in a private room holding a short meeting with several of the group’s top executives when the butler entered with an exquisite visiting card.
"A distinguished guest has arrived."
Adeline Lowell looked at the gilt-edged card, a little surprised. In this day and age, sending invitations was common, but sending formal visiting cards was not. For something that could be announced with a simple phone call or text message, who would go to the trouble of sending a formal card?
"Who is it that’s so particular?" Adeline Lowell took the card, and the next moment, her eyes froze on the name written on it.
"Silas Norwood?" She shot to her feet. "The head of Metropia’s Norwood Conglomerate, Silas Norwood?"
"Chairman Norwood is an untouchable figure even in Metropia. Several of Port Sovereign’s major families tried to invite him for their big projects this time, but none succeeded." A Lowell Family executive’s face was filled with shock and disbelief. "I heard he never attends private social events. Even at business banquets he’s forced to attend, he’s always separated from the crowd by a phalanx of bodyguards. Why would he suddenly come here?"
Adeline Lowell’s expression grew serious. "Prepare our finest tea. I’m going to meet him now."
With her executives in tow, she made a grand exit from the private hall, heading towards the main entrance under the watchful eyes of all present.
"Who is it? Has some esteemed guest arrived?" Many of the Perfumers stopped their conversations, unable to resist looking toward the entrance with curiosity.
Adeline Lowell was already outside. The first thing she saw was a group of people by the parking lot to the side of the main gate. A radiant and captivating young woman, Miss Sterling, stood at the center. And beside her was a man who possessed the grace of a jade tree, so noble and refined that it was impossible to look away.
Adeline Lowell’s breath caught for a moment. "And this is?"
Since Celia Sterling had brought Silas Norwood here, she had no intention of being secretive. Besides, this place was a world away from the social circles of Metropia. Making an early official announcement didn’t matter much.
"President Lowell, it’s a pleasure. This is my fiancé."
"Miss Sterling, you are truly enviable. It’s one thing to have a brother like Kian Sterling, but now even your fiancé is such an outstanding man. I wonder which family’s young master he is from in Metropia? Why don’t you take him inside for now? I still have to receive someone else..."
Adeline Lowell was filled with admiration, but she hadn’t forgotten her main purpose. Her eyes scanned the area, searching for the man who might be the head of the Norwood Family.
The next moment, she saw the "unattainable flower" give her a slight nod and introduce himself with elegance:
"From the Norwood Family, Silas Norwood."
