My Fiancé's Scandals Never End, So I Married His Uncle Instead-Chapter 114: The Boss is Below
Theo Chambers thought for a moment. "Miss Sutton disappeared before the internal strife at The Sterlings even began. To be precise, she vanished around the time Miss Sterling was admitted to the ICU for the third time. We heard nothing until the recent scandal broke about Chairman Sterling and Summer Sutton. That’s when we found out she’d returned to Port Sovereign at some point."
Two young women. One’s life was hanging by a thread in the ICU, while the other vanished at the exact same time.
’Such a coincidence?’
The man lowered his gaze, turning the thumb ring on his finger, lost in thought.
After a long moment.
"Investigate Summer Sutton," Silas Norwood said slowly. "And try to get a picture of her from when she was a child."
He tapped a finger lightly on the files on the desk. "Be discreet about it."
Theo Chambers had no idea why his boss’s train of thought had suddenly jumped back to Summer Sutton. Just yesterday, the man had casually said to do a quick search, and that it was fine if nothing turned up. But now, his expression was unreadable.
He paused. "Understood, Boss."
And with that, the topic was closed.
Just then, a notification flashed in Silas Norwood’s WeChat window. He glanced down and began a casual chat. Theo Chambers stole a peek at the profile picture...
A shimmering moon.
It wasn’t his boss’s usual, primary account.
’The boss is using his alt account to flirt with Miss Sterling again...’
Theo Chambers cleared his throat and changed the subject. "Miles Trenton is back. He’s waiting at the door to see you."
Silas Norwood looked at him, his gaze cool, a hint of annoyance in his eyes at being interrupted.
"We came up together, but I told him my business was private and asked him to wait outside," Theo explained. "Should I call him in now?"
Silas Norwood gave a noncommittal grunt.
Theo Chambers walked to the door, opened it, and said to the person outside, "You’re up."
Miles Trenton straightened his clothes at the doorway before walking in.
"Good to see you, Boss!" he greeted respectfully, then presented a file. "The contract with the Lowell Family has been signed. Please take a look."
Silas Norwood flipped through it twice before tossing it aside. "You can get back to work."
Miles Trenton was different from the other assistants. As the head of the perfume ingredients division, he was given almost complete autonomy by Silas Norwood. Aside from funding, Silas didn’t meddle in his affairs. Miles spent his years traveling, either in the process of acquiring a new production base or on his way to acquire one, all while managing the raw material supply from their existing sites. When you looked at it closely, he was even busier than Theo Chambers.
But Miles Trenton didn’t leave.
Silas Norwood shot him a sidelong glance. "Something else?"
Miles Trenton cleared his throat. "Boss, I’ve arranged a little... date for you and the missus."
Silas Norwood’s gaze fell back to his phone. In the chat window, he had just sent the message, "How come I didn’t know?"
He silently switched back to his primary account, tossed the phone aside, and waited for Miles to continue.
Miles Trenton cleared his throat again, speaking with the air of an experienced veteran. "Boss, you have to meet her eventually. It’s better to clear the air sooner rather than later. If you drag this out, the missus might think you’ve been deliberately testing her with an alt account all these years. You have no idea, girls get hung up on these little things. They can blow a small detail like this into ’proof’ that you don’t love her."
Nearby, Theo Chambers was surprised to find himself privy to some office gossip about Silas Norwood. He had been about to leave, but he paused at the door, turned back to a filing cabinet in the office, and started silently organizing files.
"So, you took it upon yourself to arrange a meeting for us?" Silas Norwood’s tone was a little cold.
"I wouldn’t say I took it upon myself. The missus suggested it. You don’t even dare to say no to her, so what chance do I have? I’m just the tool to get it done."
Ever since Silas Norwood had rashly given away the brand-new Sapphire Shores super-base—which Miles had just acquired and hadn’t even warmed up yet—to the Lowell Family for ten years of free use, Miles had been half-dead with heartache. He only found out later that his boss had done it all to please the missus. From that moment on, Miles Trenton had a crystal-clear understanding of Celia Sterling’s status in his boss’s eyes:
In the Norwood Conglomerate, the Boss was supreme.
But the Boss... was beneath the missus.
Besides, the sweet young lady was far easier to talk to than the aloof, noble boss in front of him. If he could just transfer all of the boss’s production bases over to his new superior sooner, Miles felt his life would become much easier.
Making the meeting happen, facilitating the transfer of ownership for the bases... his boss wasn’t in a hurry, but he was.
Silas Norwood asked calmly, "Which one of your eyes told you I’m henpecked? Do I look like that kind of person?"
"Right, Boss is just doting on the missus, that’s all," Miles Trenton said subserviently. "So, will you go, Boss? You have quite a few bases. I’ve used all our actuarial teams, and we’ve only managed to sort through a tenth of them so far. The contract is ready. If you present it to her yourself, the missus will love you to death..."
"I’m not going." Silas Norwood wasn’t ready to expose his alt account. "Figure out a way to cancel it yourself, without making me the bad guy."
Miles Trenton’s face fell. "But I already swore up and down to the missus that it would happen..."
Silas Norwood cut him off gently. "Get out."
Miles Trenton wiped his face and started wracking his brain for a way to take all the blame for canceling the meeting, without dragging his boss through the mud.
However, he had only taken a few steps after turning around when a WeChat video call suddenly popped up on Silas Norwood’s phone.
Silas Norwood paused for a fraction of a second, then answered. "Cece."
At the same time, Miles Trenton stopped in his tracks. Clutching the base contract he had just delivered, he joined Theo Chambers by the filing cabinet to "organize" documents.
Silas Norwood threw his two assistants a mild glance before focusing his attention on the video call.
"Silas, can you arrange a space for me at your place, The Regent’s Residence, for tomorrow night? I have a meeting with a client to discuss business," Celia Sterling said, getting straight to the point.
Silas Norwood nodded. "I’ll reserve my private suite, Number 1, for you, Cece."
Celia Sterling then asked, "Are you free tomorrow night? Come with me."
Silas Norwood fell silent for a moment. "Would that be appropriate?"
"The client is that super-tycoon in the perfume ingredients business. What’s inappropriate is a man and a woman discussing business alone late at night. Besides, I’m worried about giving his wife the wrong idea. With you there, Silas, I’ll feel much more at ease."
Celia Sterling paused. "If you don’t have time, I’ll just ask my brother to go."
"I have time."
"Great, then it’s settled." Celia Sterling sighed and, with some hesitation, recounted her chat with Rivermoon. "That super-tycoon is just as aloof as you are, Silas. Can you help me analyze this? Do you think there’s any chance he’ll actually show up..."
By the filing cabinet, the gazes of both assistants, Theo and Miles, silently converged on Silas Norwood as they pricked up their ears.
Silas Norwood ignored his assistants’ attention, and without betraying his firm refusal to Miles just moments ago, he said in a gentle voice, without a hint of hesitation, "He’ll be there." 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Miles Trenton visibly relaxed.
"I’ll take your word for it, then!" Celia Sterling was clearly happy. Now relaxed, she chatted idly with Silas. "Come over early this afternoon. If you’re late, we won’t get a spot at the food stall."
She was referring to Silas asking her to try on a ring, and their plans to get barbecue at a food stall that evening.
"Early? How early?" Silas Norwood casually picked up the schedule on his desk and began crossing out his appointments after five o’clock with a pen.
Celia Sterling had no idea there were other people in his office.
She teased him in a soft voice, "I’ve got candy over here for you. You can come whenever you want some."
The next moment, his slender, well-defined fingers crossed out his entire schedule from two in the afternoon onward.
To the side, Theo Chambers watched as the jam-packed schedule he had painstakingly arranged was rendered void by his boss’s pen, and the corner of his eye twitched.
"As it happens, my afternoon is completely free," Silas Norwood said, his voice exceptionally gentle as he replied to the video call with a perfectly straight face. "Should I bring you some coffee and afternoon tea?"
