Chapter 196: Through The Night

Violet

I wiped down his chest for a second time and I was even more careful around the poisoned area and other wounds. To my dismay, he didn’t appear to have gotten better. The black veins had spread further and they crawled up the side of his neck now, branching across his jaw even more like cracks in glass.

His skin was still cold and it was to a degree I was even starting to feel cold near him... even after the clothing and blanket I had layered around him for warmth.

He was going to be fine. I really hoped he was.

His eyes were closed, his breathing shallow and ragged.

I sat back on my heels, my hands shaking, my chest so tight I could barely breathe.

I had done everything I could. Cleaned every wound. Dried his skin. Made him as comfortable as possible on the hard cave floor.

And it still might not be enough.

The light from the crystals cast soft shadows across his face, and in that glow, he looked almost peaceful. Almost like he was just sleeping.

But the black veins told a different story.

I pulled my knees to my chest and wrapped my arms around them, my eyes fixed on the rise and fall of his chest.

I would not sleep.

I would not look away.

I would stay right here, watching, waiting, until he opened his eyes again.

The night stretched on and I stayed awake, watching him, unable to sleep even though my body screamed for rest. Every time his breathing changed and he shifted or groaned, my heart would lurch.

At some point, he started shivering violently, with sweat beading on his skin despite how cold he was.

At that point, I could not take it anymore.

It would also be very foolish for me to just sit there and wait for something that might not happen!

I shifted closer to him, my knees pressing into the cold stone floor as my hands hovered over his forehead.

I closed my eyes and let my energy flow outward.

The moment I touched him... beyond his skin, chaos slammed into me.

It was like plunging into a violent storm. His insides were in complete disarray, a churning mess of pain and poison and something fighting desperately to survive. The venom had spread through his system like wildfire, corrupting everything it touched, and his body was at war with itself.

And the pain—

My hands jerked back to myself as if I had touched something very hot.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe or think. All I could do was sit there in shock.

He was feeling all of this? This whole time?

How was he even still alive?

I pressed my hand to my chest, trying to steady my racing heart. My eyes burned, and I had to blink rapidly to keep the tears at bay.

I reached for him again, bracing myself for the chaos this time. And the moment I tried to push deeper, something shoved me back.

I stilled.

Had he just pushed me out?

Even unconscious, and dying, he had pushed me out.

Stubborn fool.

He was still lying there, still shivering, still dying.

And he had the audacity to push me away.

I forced my way through and his resistance met me, weaker this time. The chaos battered against me and the pain threatened to overwhelm my senses but I held on.

I couldn’t heal him. I didn’t know how. I also didn’t understand the tangled mess inside him. I wasn’t as skilled as Kael in doing this, but at the very least, I could provide Rowan some added strength.

I gathered my syzygy and started pushing it into him.

I could feel him a bit clearer now. The storm was still there, but beneath it was a steady will to survive that burned through the poison and the pain. He was fighting so I fed that flame everything I had.

I didn’t know how long I stayed there. There was only the flow of energy between us, the desperate push and pull, and the feeling of pouring myself into someone else even though waves of nauseas swept through me.

When I finally pulled back, I was drenched.

Sweat soaked through my clothes, plastering my hair to my face and neck. My arms trembled so violently I could barely hold myself upright. My vision swam a bit too.

I felt a bit hollow.

I curled up beside him on the cold stone floor, too exhausted to move, and too drained to do anything but lie there and watch his chest rise and fall.

My hand found his hand and my fingers threaded weakly through his.

He wasn’t going to die.

I wouldn’t let him.

[ - ]

I woke up and snacked on some of our food. I tried to feed him but he wouldn’t eat either. All he could do was drink.

It was painful but I left his side at some point to find a way to cover our tracks and get rid of the bodies outside. If anyone came across, it wouldn’t have to take a highly skilled wolf to discover us behind that waterfall.

When I returned back to Rowan’s side, his condition had gotten considerably worse much to my horror.

The black veins had spread further, and I had to fling the layers of clothes off him as the harsh cold that had been coming from his body had shifted. His body now burned as if he was having a high fever and his breathing had grown more laboured.

"No..."

What was the meaning of this?!

I raced for some of the food we had. He had to eat something. Just feeding him my energy would not be enough. His wounds had not even healed either!

I raced back to him, trying to make him eat, but he wouldn’t even chew or swallow the food!

"Rowan, please..."

I paused as a desperate idea came to mind.

What if I just chewed the food and mixed it with water for him to drink?

It was possibly disgusting, but did I have any other choice?
