Chapter 80: 080 Defense System
S01 walked up to the console and began to speak, “The refuge has entered first-level combat readiness, power up to full capacity, activate the defense system.”
Suddenly, the control center darkened, and a holographic image appeared in front of S01.
Chen Xu recognized at a glance that it was the structural diagram of the refuge. Not far away, a cluster of blinking red dots was approaching their position.
“The Acid Ant Beasts will reach the first line of defense in forty minutes,” S01 said. On the holographic image, one of the circular rings lit up, marking the location of the surrounding wall.
“There are one hundred and sixty micro-electromagnetic cannons deployed there.”
As S01 continued the briefing, little dots lit up on the circle on the diagram.
Chen Xu asked, “Can you remotely control these electromagnetic cannons?”
S01 answered, “No, these cannons must be manned directly.”
It seems that this game indeed had no loopholes. Any weapons of large-scale destruction were likely not available.
Chen Xu had to give up any illusions and seriously consider their options.
Looking at the holographic image, he shook his head and said, “The perimeter wall is too long; even with you and 2003, we only have four people. Each person operating one, we simply can’t defend such a large area. If the alien beasts spread out, they can easily circle behind us and surround us instead.”
With four against five hundred, the only option was to hold out in a defensible position. The wall was not a good choice.
His gaze fell on the several hundred points inside the wall and he asked, “What are these?”
“This is the second line of defense, equipped with three hundred and sixty weapon platforms, and the weapons inside are high-energy laser guns,” S01 explained, rotating and zooming in on the holographic image to show the specific structure of those points.
Chen Xu finally understood; those square metal boxes were all weapon platforms. A person could hide inside and shoot; they were protected by a metal shell on the outside.
No wonder this refuge had held up for so many years against the attacks of the alien beasts. Even if the beasts breached the walls, they were merely heading to their slaughter within this defense network.
He noticed that these weapon platforms were connected to the refuge through passageways at the bottom.
That handheld computer didn’t contain information about this passageway; it seemed like it was the top secret of the refuge.
He immediately said, “We’ll snipe at them from the second line of defense.”
S01 did not object; thus the decision was made.
While they still had some time, they discussed the details of the operation.
During that time, 2003 even went to cook two bowls of noodles. After filling their stomachs, they could sit and rest for a while.
…
“The alien beasts will reach the first defense network in five minutes.”
Chen Xu heard 2003’s reminder in his ear and said to Yang Jinxia, “Then, I’m going now.”
“Wait.”
Yang Jinxia grabbed his hand, looked into his eyes, and said, “Be careful.”
Chen Xu saw concern and affection in her eyes, and a warm current surged in his heart as he smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to die that easily—I haven’t even rolled in the sheets with you yet.”
Yang Jinxia’s long eyelashes fluttered, and she replied softly, “I’ll wait for you.”
Chen Xu released her hand and turned to walk toward the passageway.
Yang Jinxia watched his silhouette disappearing into the passage, as the lights around her dimmed. The buzzing in her ears seemed to start again.
A soft voice came from behind her, “Jinxia, I never thought you’d fall for such a man.”
Her vision was blurred by a white shirt passing by; Xiao Ya appeared in front of her, her face regaining that annoying smirk, “This self-righteous, chauvinistic, prideful, outwardly tough, but inwardly sensitive and fragile man… Isn’t he the type you used to hate the most?”
“Actually, you don’t like him, do you?”
“You just can’t live without him.”
“Hehe…”
Yang Jinxia quietly listened to the voice.
“Sister Xia, you should be in position.”
2003’s voice came through the earpiece, and the buzzing sound abruptly stopped.
She slapped her hand against the wall, and an entrance appeared above her, from which a ladder automatically descended.
She climbed up the ladder into a rather cramped space with only one seat. She sat down, followed the prompts, opened the scope, grabbed the handles on both sides, and began to wait patiently.
…
Meanwhile, Chen Xu had also taken his position on one of the weapon platforms and, while the alien beasts had yet to arrive, hurriedly familiarized himself with the weapon’s controls.
The seat below was very responsive and could rotate 360 degrees. The scope gave him a very wide field of vision. He could clearly see the surroundings.
“I’m ready over here,” he said.
“In position,” S01 stated.
“I’m in position too,” came Yang Jinxia’s voice.
Next, from the control center, 2003 announced, “One more minute.”
According to their plan, 2003, who had no combat software loaded, stayed in the control center to relay messages to them.
S01 was in the front, close to the perimeter wall, to deliver a blunt blow to the adversaries as they breached the enclosure, still unaware of the situation.
Yang Jinxia was positioned somewhat farther back, mainly to pick off any stragglers.

Chen Xu manned the rear, responsible for the security of the main gate; he had voluntarily requested this since he was the best marksman.
Similarly, this was where the danger was greatest.
The target of the alien beasts was likely the refuge; they could bypass S01 and Yang Jinxia.
But once they were blocked by the main gate, by that time, no matter how stupid they were, they wouldn’t just take hits without responding. They would certainly treat him as the main target to attack.
By then, it would depend on whether he could hold out until S01 came to help.
The plan was, once all the alien beasts had charged in, S01 would abandon the front weapon platform and rush to assist as quickly as possible.
Whether they could hold off the five hundred alien beasts, he was not sure.
But he was well aware that he had no other choice. With the road conditions outside, he couldn’t get far in a transport vehicle. Moreover, the alien beasts would likely pursue him, and without cover for protection, he would die even faster.
“Here they come.”
2003’s voice came through his ears. He took a deep breath, quickly unwrapped a piece of chocolate, and stuffed it into his mouth. While chewing and savoring the slightly bitter taste, he concentrated his mind.
Boom, boom, boom…
From afar, he heard a barrage of sounds; S01 had opened fire.
Boom, boom…
Then, after about ten seconds, another clearer sound followed.
“Such a fast speed.” He tensed slightly—Yang Jinxia’s position was almost two hundred meters away from S01, signaling that the alien beasts were much faster than humans.
Another few seconds passed, and finally, a dark figure appeared in his line of sight.
He saw the appearance of the alien beast and couldn’t help but gasp, “This thing is called an Acid Ant Beast? This is freaking Alien.”
