Chapter 196: 196 notes
At 5:30, Chen Xu grabbed his car keys, ready to pick up Luo Xiyun. Before he left, he went into the office and said to Secretary Jin, who was reading documents, “You can leave work directly after a while; I need to go out.”
She looked up and asked, “Do you need me to drive?”
“No,” Chen Xu said.
“Okay, boss, have a safe trip,” Secretary Jin stood up.
Chen Xu left the office, thinking to himself that having such a secretary was truly comforting, though her salary was too high for him to afford at the moment.
He drove Luo Xiyun’s Porsche to the Wanhua Company building, parked the car, and then walked into the building.
It had been almost half a year since he had left the company. The last time he had been here was when he had reunited with Luo Xiyun.
This time felt like revisiting the old haunts, and his heart was not at peace.
In less than half a year, he had gone from making a mere ten thousand a month as an ordinary salaried worker to owning two noodle shops with a monthly income approaching one hundred thousand. He had also become lovers with Luo Xiyun.
These changes seemed to have occurred naturally.
Yet, looking back to six months ago, many things had seemed beyond his wildest dreams.
As he reflected, the elevator arrived. He stepped in, and everything was the same as it had been six months ago, even the elevator button for his company’s floor was the same, dimmer when lit up than other floors.
Soon, the elevator doors opened.
He stepped out, greeted the receptionist, and headed towards the electronic sales department.
“Chen Xu?”
Just as he walked in, a former colleague spotted him, shouted his name, and everyone else turned to look.
“Really, it’s him.” “Why are you here?” “Nonsense, he’s definitely here to pick up Mr. Luo.”…….
The whole office was suddenly abuzz, greeting and teasing him.
“Hello, everyone,” Chen Xu waved at them. The department’s office area had expanded and there were more people than before; he saw quite a few unfamiliar faces.
At that moment, the office door opened, and Luo Xiyun walked out.
Almost reflexively, everyone in the department quieted down, and those who were standing sat down.
“You’re here,” Luo Xiyun walked straight over to Chen Xu, took his hand in front of everyone, and said, “Let’s go.”
“Everyone, goodbye.”
Amid many complex gazes, Chen Xu waved and left with Luo Xiyun.
As soon as the two of them left, the office was once again filled with a buzzing noise.
As they walked down to the car, Chen Xu asked, “What time does the evening banquet start?”
“It starts at eight, but we need to head over now. Liu Kun is not here, so I have to be there to make sure nothing goes wrong.”
Chen Xu asked in surprise, “Where has Liu Kun gone at such a time?”
“Something came up with his parents, and he had to deal with it.”
“Oh, no wonder Liu Yumeng seemed in a bad mood this morning.”
Chen Xu realized, started the car, and said, “Then I’ll take you there. Which hotel?”
Luo Xiyun gave the name of the hotel.
Half an hour later, the two arrived.
The banquet was prepared mostly by Secretary Guo. She only came to Luo Xiyun with things she couldn’t decide on her own; actually, she didn’t need to do much.
Chen Xu stayed by her side the whole time, and the two remained in the room. Seeing her handle things so naturally, he gained a clearer understanding of the operational style of senior company leaders.
Then, he thought about the afternoon negotiations, which were actually handled by Secretary Jin. Whether it was negotiation skills or the ability to gather information, he couldn’t hold a candle to her.
Thus, entrusting professional matters to professionals could yield higher efficiency and better results.
If he had been the one negotiating with Jinyun Group that afternoon, the outcome would not have been the same.
So, as a leader, was it just about sitting there and making decisions? When subordinates have higher degrees and stronger abilities, why should they obey your commands?
Normally, he wouldn’t have a subordinate like Secretary Jin; it was purely thanks to Luo Xiyun’s influence.
This made him ponder how to nurture talents like Secretary Jin, or what level his business must reach to attract such individuals.
A broader horizon, a bigger stage…
He was lost in these thoughts when Luo Xiyun spoke, “Chen Xu, the banquet is about to start.”
It was unclear how much time had passed before Luo Xiyun’s words brought him back to reality.
“Oh, sure, go ahead. Later—” Chen Xu instinctively replied. He looked up and suddenly called out to her.

Luo Xiyun stopped in her tracks and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Chen Xu pointed at the sapphire blue backless evening gown she was wearing and asked, “Are you actually going to wear that?”
“Yeah, is there a problem?” Luo Xiyun looked down at her clothes, puzzled.
“Of course, there’s a problem,” Chen Xu said sternly. “It’s too revealing, half of your back is exposed. Isn’t that a big enough issue?”
“Huh?” Luo Xiyun was taken aback, not expecting that to be the issue. She then chuckled, “This is an evening gown. That’s how it’s designed.”
Chen Xu’s tone was resolute, “I don’t care what kind of gown it is, you just can’t wear that. Change it.”
“There’s no time to change now, the banquet is about to start,” Luo Xiyun responded after glancing at the time.
Chen Xu thought for a moment, took the coat that was draped over the sofa, and placed it on her, covering her back as he said, “This will do. Don’t take it off, understand?”
“Got it, you stick-in-the-mud,” Luo Xiyun said softly, leaned forward, and kissed him on the face. Then she noticed a lipstick mark left on his cheek, realized she had just applied lipstick, and without a word of caution, waved her hand and left the room.
Chen Xu didn’t attend the banquet as he wasn’t fond of such gatherings and was not yet prepared. Being in front of company colleagues was one thing; facing a higher-tier event was another.
So, he stayed alone in the room with his phone, reading a recently downloaded eBook.
Time flew by, and before he knew, it was nine o’clock.
Knock, knock…
While Chen Xu was deep in thought about a particular segment of the book, a knock on the door sounded.
“Who is it?” He called out, received no answer, got up, walked over, and opened the door. There was no one outside—just a note on the floor.
A prank?
He picked up the note, closed the door, and turned it over, “Come to Room 702 at XX Hotel. I have something to tell you.” It was signed by Yang Jinxia.
When he saw the name at the end, his blood seemed to freeze, and he stood there, stunned.
…
Elsewhere, in the banquet hall, Luo Xiyun was chatting with a few important business partners when Secretary Guo suddenly walked up and whispered to her, “I just received an anonymous call, I think you should know.”
Her expression unchanged, Luo Xiyun politely excused herself from the conversation. Following Secretary Guo to a corner, she asked, “What happened?”
Secretary Guo looked conflicted and said, “It’s about Chen Xu, they said…”
“What did they say?” Luo Xiyun, seeing her hesitance, knew it wasn’t good news and pressed.
“That person claimed he’s still secretly meeting his ex-girlfriend, not completely over her.”
Luo Xiyun frowned and asked, “Who made the call?”
“A man; he sounded young but didn’t mention his name or identity.”
“I understand.” Luo Xiyun guessed who it might be. Glancing back at the hall, she said, “Keep an eye here, I’m going to head to the room.”
“Okay,” Secretary Guo responded.
Luo Xiyun left the banquet hall and headed to the room.
As she reached the door, she hesitated for a moment, clenched her fist tightly, swallowed, and then knocked twice.
Immediately, her heart began pounding fiercely.
One second, two seconds…
The door was pulled open from the inside; it was Chen Xu.
Her tense nerves relaxed instantly.
“What are you doing standing at the door? Come in,” Chen Xu noticed her lingering and her uneasy expression and asked, “What’s wrong?”
She walked in and said, “It’s nothing.”
“That’s not true; something must be up,” Chen Xu insisted as he pulled her to sit on the sofa and asked, “Did you receive some weird message?”
Knowing she couldn’t hide it from him, Luo Xiyun admitted, “Just now, there was an anonymous call.”
“I knew it,” Chen Xu said with a laugh, “After you left, someone slipped a note under the door.”
She instantly understood that someone was trying to drive a wedge between them, but she couldn’t help asking, “Where is the note?”
“I tore it up; it’s in the trash.”
“I’m sorry.”
“There’s no need to apologize; I’m actually happy. It proves you really do care about me. I’d be worried if you didn’t care at all.”
