Chapter 42: Chapter 41: Questioning One’s Own Heart, Meeting Wu Datong

He slowly stirred awake. Above him, the old, dim hanging lamp was still gently swaying and creaking.

Lu Xuan shot up, holding the ancient Daoist Robe in his hands and wearing the Daoist Crown, but the Keeper of the Records and the bamboo slips were nowhere to be seen.

’Were they left behind in the Guardian Storage Room?’

Muttering to himself, Lu Xuan took off the Daoist Crown and held it in his hands, then carefully examined both the robe and the crown.

The robe’s material was unknown. It looked ancient and profound, yet it felt as light as a feather in his hands. A gray brilliance, like Chaos, occasionally flowed across its surface.

The Daoist Crown was much the same, with one difference: it possessed an additional aura, one of supreme and infinite majesty. A single glance at it would bring the word "Supreme" to mind.

This "Supreme" was not that "Supreme"; it did not refer to his master, Supreme Laojun, but to the concept of "the highest one," the most supreme existence between heaven and earth.

After a moment of dazed reflection, Lu Xuan stored the Daoist Crown and Daoist Robe in the sea of his mind, just as he had with the Three-Five Evil-Slaying Sword.

He then meticulously made his bed, washed up, and finally sat down to turn on his phone.

Year 6823, March 10th, Wednesday.

Only a little over two days had passed, yet it felt like a lifetime ago. Counting carefully, it had only been ten days since he had embarked on the path of cultivation on the 1st of the month...

So much had changed in ten days.

He glanced at the news for East Sea City. It was still under lockdown. The immortal war had been raging for three days, and the situation in the city was growing increasingly tense.

Lu Xuan sighed, put his phone away without dwelling on it, and sat quietly cross-legged on his bed to perform Introspection.

His heart, liver, and spleen had been fully developed. The next step was the lungs, the seventh stage of the Jade Tower, but his accumulation wasn’t sufficient yet. He needed a little more time.

His heart made his qi and blood vigorous and vast, his liver purified his physical body to be like flawless crystal, and his spleen made his blood radiate a treasured light, all of which constantly strengthened him from head to toe.

He had comprehended seventy-seven Great Dao Texts for his Mediation of Creation, but had only grasped a few for the Slaying Sword Form—not even enough to be considered initiated. As for the Primordial Body, he had barely scratched the surface.

’The path of cultivation is long...’ Lu Xuan muttered to himself, a determined glint in his eyes.

’I can’t slack off. I’m only a Three-organ Grandmaster, and so is Director Ji of the Inspectorate. This level of cultivation is nowhere near enough to find out what really happened in Qianlong City.’

’The ultimate goal of the path I walk is to bring clarity to the world. To achieve this, I must first attain the state of "Only I Am Venerable." It is a path strewn with corpses, but it is also the path to invincibility.’

’The dream world... is it another cosmos, or is it this world’s Ancient Times?’

’If it is the Ancient Times, then where is my master now? Where are my senior brothers? Where are all the Immortals and Buddhas?’

’Why is history fractured? Why has the Daoist Collection been buried and forgotten?’

’If I walk the path of invincibility, will I encounter the Ancient Immortals and Buddhas along the way?’ 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

’The world is vast. How can one claim to be invincible? What does it even mean to be invincible?’

’Should I try to persuade others with reason and leave fewer corpses in my wake? Or should I take up my sword, carve a path forward, and subdue them with force?’

Lu Xuan questioned himself repeatedly, searching his own heart.

He sat cross-legged for a long time before exhaling a turbid breath. The answer he received from his heart consisted of only two words.

Don’t know!

Suddenly, the wooden house trembled. He got up and stood by the window, gazing out. On the horizon, the glint of blades flashed once more, accompanied by the roll of thunder.

Immortals were locked in duels.

Before long, blood stained the clouds red, and an Immortal Corpse fell from the sky. The clash of blades ceased, and the sounds of battle died down.

"The fourth one!" the Immortal on the horizon boomed, their voice echoing throughout the area. "There are still six days left. I will wait here. For every one that comes, I will kill one!"

Lu Xuan frowned. That voice sounded very familiar.

’Is it a coincidence?’

He pondered for a moment, then shook his head to put it out of his mind. He decided to see how much Spirit Rice he could create now by using Mediation of Creation as a Three-organ Grandmaster.

"Brother Xuan! Uncle Zheng! Brother Xuan!!"

Looking through the window, he saw a small figure sprinting down the narrow street, shouting in a tearful voice.

It was Wu Xiaoxu.

Without hesitating, Lu Xuan pushed the door open and waved.

Wu Xiaoxu stopped, panting, and wiped away his tears.

"Brother Xuan, you’re finally back! My dad, my dad, he’s..."

"Slow down. What happened to Uncle Wu?"

Wu Xiaoxu’s face crumpled in panic.

"My dad just came back from gathering herbs! He’s covered in wounds, and so much blood!"

Lu Xuan’s expression changed.

"Take me to him!"

The two boys raced down the street. Lu Xuan was so anxious that he didn’t even greet the neighbors who peeked out as they passed. Before long, they arrived at Wu Xiaoxu’s home.

Wu Xiaoxu frantically pushed the door open, and Lu Xuan followed close behind. The moment he stepped inside, he saw Wu Datong lying on the sofa.

Wu Datong was covered in wounds, his tattered clothes stuck to his bloody flesh. He was severely injured.

"Dad!" Wu Xiaoxu’s voice was tinged with tears again.

"Why did you call Lu the Kid over? Didn’t I tell you I’m fine..." Wu Datong waved a tired hand and added,

"I just fell off a cliff while gathering herbs. Luckily, it wasn’t too high. They’re just superficial wounds, nothing serious."

Lu Xuan observed for a moment, then said to Wu Xiaoxu,

"Xiaoxu, is there any medicine at home?"

"We used up all the medicine during that last incident. With the city under lockdown, the clinic hasn’t had a chance to restock..."

"Then go to Uncle Zheng’s house and ask if he has anything for external injuries. If not, ask the other neighbors."

"Okay, okay!" Wu Xiaoxu hurriedly ran out.

After he left, Wu Datong sighed.

"Lu the Kid, I’m really fine. It’s just some superficial wounds..."

Lu Xuan said nothing. He just poured a cup of hot water, placed it in front of Wu Datong, then got a mop and cleaned the bloodstains off the floor.

After cleaning up, he finally sat down and said softly,

"Uncle Wu, can you run?"

"Run from what?" Wu Datong said, astonished. "I just fell off a cliff. Even if they’re just superficial wounds, it was still a nasty fall. And you, kid, are telling me to run?"

He added teasingly,

"You think I’m not hurt badly enough, is that it?"

Lu Xuan shook his head gently, his gaze clear.

"Uncle Wu, your injuries aren’t blunt trauma from a fall. I see cuts, and I see scorch marks. A regular fire couldn’t cause marks like these. It must have been electricity, or lightning."

Wu Datong’s eyelid twitched. He forced a smile.

"What are you talking about, kid..."

Lu Xuan didn’t answer, continuing on as if to himself.

"If I’m not mistaken, you’ve gone out to gather herbs every day for the past few days, Uncle Wu. And every day you’ve returned with some new ’injuries from a fall,’ haven’t you?"

Wu Datong fell silent.

At that moment, Lu Xuan pushed the cup of water forward and began to speak softly.

"So, Uncle Wu, why are those Immortals causing trouble for you? Can you run? Only four of the ten days have passed. There are still six to go..."

"Uncle Wu, you’re in bad shape. I’m afraid you won’t survive six more slaughters. Why not take Xiaoxu and leave?"

Wu Datong’s pupils contracted violently.

After a long silence, he sighed, no longer denying it. He said softly,

"You really are much smarter than that little rascal of mine, Lu the Kid. Uncle Wu has a favor to ask of you. As a reward, I’ll teach you a Daoist Scripture, but you must remember to keep it secret and never reveal it to anyone."

Without waiting for Lu Xuan to ask, he continued,

"This scripture is called... the Supreme Foundation Establishment Chapter."
