My Dreams Connect to Ancient Times-Chapter 129 - 3: A Celestial Human Arrives Outside Gouxian Town
Gouxian Town.
After some running around by the middle-aged guide, the eight of them were finally settled into various homes, lodging for the night.
"This is the place."
After getting Zhong Muhua’s group of four and the young couple settled, the middle-aged guide led Lu Xuan and Xiaoyan to a brick house that looked rather tidy. He smiled and said:
"This house has two or three rooms, but only an old man lives here. I just asked him, and he agreed to let us stay for the night."
As he spoke, he walked into the front yard and called out enthusiastically,
"Uncle Zhu? Still at it? The sun’s gone down, you should get some rest!"
Lu Xuan and Xiaoyan followed him inside. The front yard wasn’t large, but it wasn’t small either. Apart from a narrow path, both sides were lined with vegetable plots.
The two small plots could hardly grow much of anything; they were likely just a hobby for the old man.
In one of the plots, a round, plump old man was holding a Nail Rake, loosening the soil. When he heard the call, he set the rake down and turned around with a cheerful grin:
"Alrighty, you all go on inside and have a seat. I’ll just finish loosening up this patch of soil. Gettin’ old... took me the whole afternoon just for this little bit..."
As he spoke, Uncle Zhu’s gaze swept over and landed on Lu Xuan. He froze, took three steps back, and nearly fell to the ground.
Lu Xuan shot forward in a flash, catching the old man and asking with concern:
"Are you all right, sir?"
"I... I..." The plump old man stared, dumbfounded, at the youth. ’The resemblance... he looks so much like him...’
But it seemed to be just a resemblance, nothing more.
He coughed violently a few times and forced a smile.
"It’s nothing, nothing. I’m just getting old, not so steady on my feet anymore... Go on inside, have a seat!"
With that, the plump old man led the three of them into the house. With no electric lights, the room was lit by only a few candles, making it quite dim. It was, however, remarkably neat and clean. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Lu Xuan and Xiaoyan sat down, with the guide taking a seat to the side. The plump old man quickly brought over three cups and began pouring hot water into each, asking casually as he did,
"So... what are you two young folks’ names?"
"My name is Yan Jiangxue," Xiaoyan said politely. The young man smiled as well. "I’m Lu Xuan."
The plump old man froze as if struck by lightning. His hand jerked, nearly spilling the hot water. His feet gave way, and he began to topple backward uncontrollably. Once again, it was Lu Xuan who swiftly caught him.
"Sir..." Lu Xuan was taken aback. He subconsciously sent his Divine Thought through his palm to check on him. The old man’s body was frighteningly frail, his lifeblood severely depleted. ’No wonder.’
He helped the dazed, bewildered old man to a seat and said,
"Please, sir, let us get that."
"Oh, oh, right..." The plump old man nodded slowly, his eyes darting back and forth over the young man, a look of what seemed like terror in them.
"Uncle Zhu, what’s gotten into you today?" the guide asked with concern. "You’re not usually like this."
The plump old man seemed to be in a trance for a moment, then waved his hand dismissively, as if sleepwalking:
"It’s nothing, nothing. I, Old Zhu, just caught a bit of a cold these past couple of days. Plus, I really am getting old, my limbs aren’t as nimble as they used to be. But I’ve seen the doctor, and he said it’s nothing to worry about, nothing at all..."
He soon managed to calm himself down and arranged rooms for all three of them.
Yes, the guide was staying here as well.
There were three rooms in the house. The plump old man took one, the guide took one, and Lu Xuan and Xiaoyan... one room.
The faces of the young man and woman flushed slightly.
"I’m stepping out for a bit! I’m stepping out! You two get some rest!" the plump old man said timidly, peeking at Lu Xuan every so often like a small child who had done something wrong.
Lu Xuan was puzzled. He could tell something was off, but he said anyway,
"In your condition... why don’t I help you?"
"No, no, no!" The plump old man waved his hands in a panic. "You rest, you rest!"
Without giving the young man a chance to say another word, he twisted his bulky frame and scurried out the door, leaving Lu Xuan completely baffled.
’I just sensed that his internal energy was failing and his lifeblood was depleted. How can he run so fast?’
’And why does he look at me like he’s seen a ghost?’
’Is it that big of a deal...?’
Beside them, the middle-aged guide also remarked, puzzled,
"Uncle Zhu’s real name is Zhu Wuneng. He’s a classic good-natured fellow, and he’s usually hale and hearty. I have no idea what’s gotten into him today..."
He glanced out the window, following the plump old man’s figure with his eyes, and added,
"Looks like Uncle Zhu is headed to his neighbor Yang Erlang’s house—he’s the owner of that Old Black Dog from the town entrance. That young couple, Xu Lindao and Xu Qingqiu, are staying there tonight... Oh well, it’s probably nothing."
After a few more pleasantries, the middle-aged guide went to his room to rest. Lu Xuan and Xiaoyan returned to their room as well. Once the door was closed, they sat on the edge of the bed, looking at each other.
The atmosphere was a little awkward.
"I’ll sleep on the side against the wall," Xiaoyan said softly. "I’m used to it. It feels safer sleeping against a wall..."
All traces of the fierce warrior who had slain Celestial Humans and killed Earth Immortals were gone. The young man now looked endearingly clumsy, even at a loss for what to do. He just nodded blankly and said,
"I don’t need to sleep. I usually spend my nights in Cultivation. I only sleep occasionally, once every two or three days..."
In truth, both he and Xiaoyan had long since reached a point where they no longer required sleep. The reason they still did so was mostly out of habit... Of course, for Lu Xuan, there was another reason: he needed to dream.
Xiaoyan didn’t know what to do with her hands, so she fidgeted restlessly with the hem of her clothes.
