Chapter 119: The Authority Of An Awakened

"I won’t repeat myself," West voiced with a commanding tone. "Let her go."

The way he stood, unshaken, unapologetic and authoritative... with the pressure radiating from him, made everyone in the vicinity flinch.

They could feel a certain chill of danger permeate the air even if they couldn’t explain it.

The guards felt it too and for a split second, doubt flickered across their faces... but their pride didn’t let them back down.

"He’s just a kid," one muttered under his breath.

They tightened their grip on the woman and tried to drag her past him.

The moment this happened, West moved with an almost lazy and unbothered bearing, placing one palm against the chest of the nearer guard.

With a simple forward shove, the guard felt his body leaving the ground...

Fwwhiiii~

He was sent flying backward as if struck by a moving vehicle, crashing across the stone plaza before skidding to a stop several meters away.

Gasps detonated through the crowd.

"What—?!"

"An awakened?!"

"That kid is awakened!"

The other guard immediately released the woman and stumbled backward with widened eyes.

The authority of an awakened was higher than even law enforcement... and they weren’t law enforcement which made things even worse.

They knew well what could happen if they pissed off an awakened... he could decide to kill every single person here and not one police would dare question him.

The guard who had been thrown groaned from where he lay with the wind knocked out of him but clearly alive.

The remaining guard swallowed hard and then, without hesitation, he bowed.

"I—I apologize!" he stammered. "We did not realize—"

His voice shook slightly.

The reverence was immediate.

In this world, awakened individuals stood on a different tier whether they were young or old. It mattered not.

West didn’t acknowledge the bow.

Instead, he stepped in front of the woman, placing himself between her and the guards.

She looked up at him, stunned.

"Two of my classmates are missing as well," he said calmly. "Calvin Rhee. Emily Tran."

The woman’s eyes widened.

"So it’s not just my son..." she whispered.

West met her gaze.

"I want to go in and check for them."

The guards stiffened slightly at that.

"I need to see a picture of your son," West continued. "If I encounter him, I’ll know."

The woman nodded frantically.

"Yes, yes—thank you—thank you—"

Her hands fumbled as she pulled out her phone.

Her fingers shook so badly she nearly dropped it.

She swiped through photos before holding the screen up.

A boy around twelve years old smiled at the camera. He had black hair and a slightly crooked grin and was clad in a red hoodie.

West memorized the details in seconds and then asked for an extra detail.

"His name?" West inquired.

"Ethan," she whispered. "Ethan Cole."

West gave a single nod.

"I’ll look."

Tears streamed down her face now.

"Thank you... thank you..."

Around them, students were staring openly in both awe and reverence.

Even the teachers looked uncertain whether to intervene or not.

They had all forgotten that West was an awakened and didn’t have to follow the usual rules... this was because, West was pretty much an easy going person who didn’t flaunt his power unlike Caleb.

The guard who had bowed stepped aside quickly, clearing the path toward the entrance.

No one tried to stop him.

No one dared.

West turned and walked back toward the gates of the Eternal Ruins.

The ancient stone arch loomed overhead and now the interior beyond was much quieter due to the current lack of tourists.

As he crossed the threshold, he paused briefly upon sensing another movement in the atmosphere...

Another tremor.

This time, even those near the entrance felt it faintly. It was stronger than before.

The ground vibrated for half a second before settling.

West didn’t react outwardly.

Behind him, the guards stood straighter than before.

Watching him with something close to reverence.

He stopped just inside and turned his head slightly.

"You."

The guard who had bowed hurried forward immediately.

"Yes, sir."

"Take me to where my teachers and the guide are."

The guard hesitated only a fraction of a second.

"They are near the North underground quadrant," he said quickly. "Where the shoe was found."

"Move."

The guard nodded and began walking briskly ahead.

West followed and soon they vanished into the distance.

Nina stood at the edge of the entrance plaza with her fists clenched and visibly worried.

Mira beside her looked shaken but resolute.

"He’s going alone?" Mira whispered.

Nina’s eyes never left the ruins.

"Yes," she said quietly.

"Wish I hugged him before he left..."

Mira placed her hand on Nina’s shoulder from the side.

"He’ll be fine... he is an awakened after all..."

Nina nodded but still looked worried. "I wish there was some way I could help. I feel useless just standing out here..."

Back inside, on the corridors that led to the second layer, the air had grown even colder than it originally was.

West’s senses sharpened instinctively as he felt another tremor.

"How long has this been happening?"

The guard faltered slightly in his steps.

"Sir... it’s been quite some time now... weeks or maybe even up to a month," he admitted quietly. "We thought it was structural instability."

West didn’t respond because he knew that this couldn’t be structural instability.

As they descended the reinforced stairwell toward the underground layer, the lighting flickered once.

The guard swallowed.

"We—we’ve already called central command to alert some of the neighbouring gangs," he added nervously. "Reinforcements are on the way."

West’s lips curved slightly.

"Good." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

The guard led West quickly through the second layer with their boots striking stone in uneven rhythm.

They turned a corner and walked into chaos...

The air was thick with suspended dust as fragments of broken stone littered the floor.

And standing near the center of the disturbance, was Mr. Ibe, alone.

He looked nothing like the composed teacher from earlier.

His face was pale and his hands were trembling with Calvin’s shoe still clutched tightly in his grasp.

The guard rushed forward.

"Sir! Where are the others? Where’s the guide?"

Mr. Ibe didn’t answer at first.

His breathing was uneven and his eyes unfocused.

West stepped closer.

"What happened?" he questioned with a calm tone.

Mr. Ibe’s gaze slowly found him and he opened his mouth... but words didn’t leave...

He closed it after a while and shakily pointed at the ground.

"Down..." he whispered hoarsely.

The guard frowned. "Down where?"

Mr. Ibe swallowed hard.

"Down there... they dragged them down there..."
