Fu Ying ran away.
Afraid of being seen by Shen Liguang at the scene of a group fight.
She didn't want him to think she was a bad kid.
Her tiny body carried a backpack, and her head bowed down as she stared at her red hands.
She didn't know who stepped on it, her hand hurt so much.
The sunset fell behind the mountains, the darkness gradually spreading, and Fu Ying hastened her pace as she saw the sky turning dark.
She was afraid of being seen by Shen Liguang when she started running; in her panic, she didn't choose her path and didn't know where she had run to.
Now, she seemed to be lost.
Fu Ying looked around, the small woodland was eerily quiet, with occasional strange cries and rustling branches overhead as birds passed by.
Any slight movement in the grass made Fu Ying's heart tremble with fear.
She stood still, looking around, knowing that when it got dark, she should head towards the direction of any lights.
This thought was quite clever, unfortunately, Fu Ying wasn't so lucky.
The woodlands behind the school were dark and without standing at the highest point, it was impossible to see any lights.
Fu Ying began to feel uneasy, trying hard to remember how she came and wanting to return the same way.
Suddenly, there was the sound of footsteps stepping on branches ahead, and then a beam of white light shone towards her.
Fu Ying raised her hand to shield her eyes.
The person moved the flashlight away and approached her with big steps.
Fu Ying stood frozen with wariness, the other's footsteps getting closer, flashing the flashlight, leaving Fu Ying with a blind spot in her vision.
The dense woods were darker than outside; in the deep night, the figure of the person appeared very tall, steadily walking towards her.
Fu Ying had grown up in a complex environment.
In the deep palace, people are inscrutable; one moment they can be laughing with you, and the next they can stab you in the back.
The Empress told her, people are unpredictable, not to trust anyone easily.
Fu Ying turned and wanted to run.
Shen Liguang frowned and quickly approached, reaching out to grab the child's backpack.
"Who are you? Let go of me."
The little girl's voice was wary, panicked, and had a faint crying tone.
She struggled, not very strong, but it seemed to be all the strength she had.
Shen Liguang frowned; in the quiet woodland, his voice was low and clear: "It's me, Shen Liguang."
Fu Ying's heart jolted, and then she breathed a sigh of relief.
It was him.
"What's there to fear? Maybe it's someone who can take you out."
Fu Ying whispered an explanation: "Because the Empress told me the unknown human heart is too terrible."
Shen Liguang raised his eyebrows, his tone carried a light smile: "The Empress?"
"No, not that, it's mom," Fu Ying hurried to explain, seemingly afraid that Shen Liguang wouldn't believe her, and fearing he would think she was crazy, she added, "I've watched too many period dramas."
Last time it was 'young master,' this time 'the Empress,' Shen Liguang thought, wondering if next time he met the little girl, she would blurt out 'Father Emperor.'
"Watch less period dramas in the future."
"..." Fu Ying fidgeted with her fingers, slightly relaxed and then lightly nodded, "Oh."
"Turn around, walk straight in the three o'clock direction, and you'll find your way out. Can you do it?" Shen Liguang said while handing the flashlight over to her.
Fu Ying turned to glance in the three o'clock direction, the beam of the flashlight shining ahead, the end of the light swallowed by darkness like a bottomless abyss.
Shen Liguang gave her a look, the child had a hesitant face, he asked again: "Can you?"
"I..."
Before she could finish, Shen Liguang interrupted her: "Then follow me."
"Okay." Fu Ying lowered her head and stopped talking.
Shen Liguang had sounded a bit cold just now, she wondered if she was troubling him.
She was especially afraid of troubling others.
She tried her best not to slow Shen Liguang down, merely following quietly and closely behind him.
If there was any noise behind her that frightened her stiff, she wouldn't make a sound.
Shen Liguang glanced at the time, then cast a sidelong look at Fu Ying behind him.
The little girl followed him, alternating between walking and running.
"Why aren't you speaking?"
Shen Liguang suddenly spoke, and Fu Ying was taken aback.
"I'm afraid I'll disturb you."
Shen Liguang chuckled lightly: "You're quite sensible; not at all like how your big brother describes you."
"Big brother, where are you going?"
"Just now, a girl tried to commit suicide by jumping into the river here because she couldn't afford her mother's surgery costs. When we saved her, we never found the bag she mentioned, which contained thirty thousand yuan in cash meant for her mother's surgery."
Fu Ying was puzzled about where there could be a river in this small grove, when she noticed under the moonlight not far away, the river's surface shimmering, with ripples spreading gently in the light breeze.
Approaching, she found a pair of girls' shoes placed by the riverbank.
"I saw you carrying the girl out from the depths of the woods."
"So, it was you who stared at me before."
"I..." Fu Ying was somewhat nervous, her heart pounding.
Fortunately, the sky was getting dark; the moonlight was pale, shining on people's faces, revealing no abnormalities.
Having been discovered, she admitted: "Yeah."
Shen Liguang searched along the river for the bag, his voice drifting over with the gentle breeze.
"I thought that girl wasn't you."
Fu Ying bowed her head, biting her lip.
She sneakily glanced up, sneakily observing him.
Shen Liguang didn't notice anything unusual, continuing to search for the girl's bag.
"Big brother, let me help you look for it."
"No need, I've found it."
Shen Liguang removed a black bag from beneath a toppled tree branch and looked her way.
To avoid eye contact with him, Fu Ying became somewhat flustered, but pretended to calmly look elsewhere.
Making others think that she was captivated by the moonlit scenery of green mountains and clear waters.
They went back the way they came.
Fu Ying was escorted to the car, and as she watched Shen Liguang's figure grow distant, she felt a little regret.
She should have twisted her ankle, or complained of being tired, perhaps then she could have physical contact with him.
But she didn't dare.
Didn't dare to trouble him.
Didn't dare to do such a thing.
People in ancient times were quite reserved.
Holding hands would make their faces turn red with shyness.
Fu Ying lowered her head, harboring a young girl's romantic thoughts.
...
When Fu Ying returned home, she found that her family had been desperately searching for her.
As soon as they saw her return, Fu Mingchuan rushed up to her.
"Where did you go? You didn't answer your phone. I asked your classmates, and they all said they didn't see you. Where did you go?"
Only then did Fu Ying realize that she hadn't been home for several hours after school, and her whole family had been anxiously searching for her.
She had forgotten about the magical little device, the mobile phone.
She was always not used to its presence.
That little thing, much faster than pigeon post.
If she had sent a text or made a call, it would have put her family at ease.
"Daddy, I'm sorry for worrying you."
"It's okay, as long as you're fine," Fu Mingchuan hugged his precious daughter, taking a deep breath: "You must tell us next time something happens. Your big brother has gone out looking for you, call him to let him know to come back."
Fu Mingchuan's tone was clearly relieved.
Fu Ying felt guilty inside and obediently nodded: "Mhm."
