My Computer Leads to an Instance Dungeon-Chapter 70: Dark Night Hunt
Fang Zhen informed Quade of his battle plan.
All the Kobold minions in the mine had been cleared out, leaving only four Elite Dogmen. If Fang Zhen had managed to kill one with a blind shot earlier, then there were only three left.
There were also the two bosses: the Heavy-Armored Warhammer Dogman Warrior and the Dragon Scale Sacrifice.
With so few troops, if the Dogman Priest had even basic intelligence, it wouldn’t split its forces again. The most likely scenario was that they would hole up in Mine Cave D, just like before.
Fang Zhen planned to start the battle there.
Based on the mine’s layout, Fang Zhen would fight in Mine Cave D for a while. If the Kobolds gave chase, he would kite them and change position, pulling them to Mine Cave C to fight.
If he was still cornered in Mine Cave C, he would use Molotov Cocktails to create a firebreak in the tunnel between Mine Cave C and Mine Cave B. He would then retreat to Mine Cave B and kite them for another round.
In short, he would apply the sixteen-character mantra of guerrilla warfare: "The enemy advances, we retreat; the enemy camps, we harass; the enemy tires, we attack; the enemy retreats, we pursue." He would flexibly utilize the fine traditions our army had developed during the war of resistance.
Fang Zhen refused to believe it. If these tactics could drive the "little devils" back to their island nation, how could they not take care of a few Kobolds?
"Quade, your job is to guard the entrance of the tunnel leading from Mine Cave B to Mine Cave C. Keep the equipment safe. The moment I return to Mine Cave B, hand me my gear, then take the rest of the equipment to the tunnel in the Mine Hall."
"Yes, my lord." Quade also got into character, replying seriously.
Fang Zhen nodded.
Back in Redstone Town, Fang Zhen had felt inspired, and now he was filled with fighting spirit.
He saw clearing this dungeon as a challenge of intellect, stamina, strategy, and skill.
The Elite Dogmen and the two bosses in Mine Cave D were quite intimidating, but instead of making Fang Zhen back down, it only spurred his potential.
’If I completely clear out the Kobolds in Mine Cave D, it’ll most likely count as clearing the Redstone Town Mine dungeon. After all, it’d be a complete wipe.’
’Not only will I get the Merit Points reward, but I’ll also get the Kobold treasure.’
’More importantly, since the Dragon Scale Sacrifice can use Magic Flame Arrows, there’s a chance I could obtain magical power too. At the very least, this is an opportunity to come into contact with Magic.’
’I’m a Spear, Shield, and Bow Warrior who’s going to become a Mage, hehe.’
Fang Zhen’s heart burned with passion, his fighting spirit soaring.
"Follow me into the mine!" Fang Zhen pulled down the left eyepiece of the thermal imager on his head, leaving his left eye looking through the device and his right eye seeing normally.
He carried the Cheetah Hunting Crossbow and walked toward the mine.
Quade followed close behind.
Fang Zhen ducked and entered the mine.
He switched on the high-intensity flashlight fixed to his right hip.
The mine had already been cleared twice, so there weren’t many minions left. Fang Zhen wasn’t afraid the bright light would attract the Kobolds’ attention.
With the thermal imager on his head, he could turn off the flashlight and still see his enemies. He wouldn’t miss anything or be disoriented by the light.
As for the Kobolds, they would either be blinded by the glare or face their fears in the dark, losing the battle of vision.
Either way, Fang Zhen couldn’t lose.
Right now, Fang Zhen had the high-intensity flashlight fixed to his right hip. On his left, he had fastened an extra belt holding a small leather drawstring pouch, which served as a quiver.
Having entered the mine, he was on familiar ground. He first went to the Mine Hall, then expertly made his way to Mine Cave A.
From his previous encounters, Fang Zhen could roughly gauge the Kobolds’ intelligence. Even the Dragon Scale Sacrifice wasn’t smart enough to think of laying an ambush in Mine Cave A to cut off his escape route.
However, Fang Zhen’s strategy was to be cautious enough to sail a ship for ten thousand years. He wouldn’t leave the Kobolds even a one-in-ten-thousand chance.
He still scouted out Mine Cave A.
Just as Fang Zhen had expected, there were no heat sources in Mine Cave A under the view of his thermal imager. An ambush was out of the question.
With his mind at ease, Fang Zhen turned back and headed from the Mine Hall to Mine Cave B.
He passed through the tunnel and entered Mine Cave B. This area was also completely devoid of Kobolds.
Fang Zhen was certain now—the Kobolds had holed up.
He continued forward.
When he reached the tunnel between Mine Cave B and Mine Cave C, Fang Zhen had Quade wait there, taking out the spear and Molotov Cocktails and placing them at the tunnel’s entrance.
"You stand guard here. Don’t doze off. When you hear me shout for you, follow the plan," Fang Zhen instructed.
"Rest assured, my lord," Quade replied.
Fang Zhen had a good deal of trust in Quade’s obedience.
He took his Cheetah Hunting Crossbow and entered the tunnel.
It seemed the Kobolds really had retreated. There weren’t even any candles in the tunnel; it was pitch-black, relying entirely on the high-intensity flashlight on Fang Zhen’s hip for light.
With his left eye on the thermal imager’s view, Fang Zhen wasn’t afraid of an ambush.
He pushed forward, passing through the tunnel and into Mine Cave C.
This level was still empty of Kobolds.
Fang Zhen jogged through, warming up for the kiting tactics he would soon employ. In just over ten seconds, he reached the spiral ramp where he had thrown the firebombs last time.
He slowed his pace. The Cheetah Hunting Crossbow in his hands was already drawn, and a Hunting Arrow was loaded.
Fang Zhen grew more cautious. He switched off the high-intensity flashlight and slowly descended the ramp.
He rounded a bend and came to a spot midway down the ramp. The view from here was excellent, offering an unobstructed look into Mine Cave D.
In Fang Zhen’s line of sight, about sixty-odd meters ahead, he could see with his naked eye that two small tents had been pitched at some point. That was the spot where the Kobolds kept their treasure chest; he could see the white metal box.
Outside the tents was a metal rack with four or five candles on it, providing light.
A little farther away, at a distance of nearly seventy meters, an Armored Dogman Warrior and a Scout were patrolling the area.
Due to the angle, both the Armored Dogman Warrior and the Scout were holding candles with their backs to Fang Zhen.
’Oho, I picked the right time. Kobolds need rest too. Have the two bosses both gone to sleep?’
Seeing this, Fang Zhen felt a small thrill of excitement.
What a perfect opportunity to attack!
Fang Zhen thought for a moment, then raised the Cheetah Hunting Crossbow. He didn’t turn on the Large Laser Sighting Device, instead adjusting the optical scope to 16x magnification and aiming at the Armored Dogman Warrior with its back to him.
If he had brought the Dragon Gall Crossbow, he would be aiming for the Scout right now. The Dragon Gall Crossbow had a limited range, and by the time he was close enough to kill the Scout, he would also be within the Scout’s approximate attack range.
But with the Cheetah Hunting Crossbow, Fang Zhen had no such worries.
With the Scout’s small wooden crossbow, forget an effective shot; its maximum range might not even reach him.
Under 16x magnification, Fang Zhen’s right eye used the candlelight as his Hunting Crossbow locked onto the Armored Dogman Warrior.
Fang Zhen was eager to see if the Cheetah Hunting Crossbow could pierce armor from a distance of 60 to 70 meters!
After getting a rough lock on his target, Fang Zhen entered a state of readiness, simultaneously activating Combat Focus and Combat Intuition.
In an instant, Fang Zhen entered a state of absolute focus.
And in that moment, inspiration struck.
Half-relying on the optical scope and half on his intuition, he made a slight adjustment to his aim and, at the same time, pulled the trigger.
WHOOSH!
The arrow from the Hunting Crossbow shot out, whistling through the air.
Just then, the Armored Dogman Warrior, who had been patrolling with a candle, turned around.
’Did I miss?’ the thought flashed through Fang Zhen’s mind.
However, less than half a second later, the Hunting Arrow reached the Armored Dogman Warrior.
The Armored Dogman Warrior, which had its back to Fang Zhen, was now sideways, its left ribcage facing his direction.
SCRAPE!
A sound of scraping metal rang out.
The Hunting Arrow pierced the Armored Dogman above its left ribs, the shaft sinking into its body.
The arrowhead emerged from below its right ribs.
It actually shot straight through!
The Armored Dogman looked down in a daze, not even letting out a cry of pain. Confused, it stared at its body, not understanding what had happened, before collapsing to its knees with a THUD and lying motionless on the ground.
The fall of the Armored Dogman alerted the nearby Dogman Scout.
The Dogman Scout turned, letting out a confused yelp.
At that moment, Fang Zhen had already loaded a second arrow onto his Hunting Crossbow.
