My College Teacher is My Children's Mom-Chapter 669
Zhou Cuilan nodded occasionally and made a few agreeing comments as she listened to the people chatting around her. Seeing Lin Xiaolan and Zhang Kai approaching, she gave her third aunt a meaningful look.
"Your daughter is here."
After her husband, Lin Dahu, passed away, her son Lin Rui had wanted to move her back home so he could look after her more easily. In the end, she disagreed, not wanting to disrupt the lives of her son and daughter-in-law.
I’m a gossip and have plenty of bad habits. Wouldn’t moving in just cause trouble?
Thus, she lived by herself in the old house for many years and quite enjoyed the tranquility.
This time, when Lin Xiaolan came to visit, her mother had agreed to go stay at her place for a while after the New Year’s celebration.
It’s true I miss my daughter, so I’ve decided to go. Besides, I have some money on hand I can secretly give her.
The Third Aunt beckoned, and Lin Xiaolan came over, saying she needed to head back.
"Why leave? Stay and have dinner with us tonight."
"Exactly, and you can help us send Dabao on his way."
Lin Xiaolan shook her head. "There’s no need, I’m quite busy with work."
Zhou Cuilan smiled slightly. "Busy or not, one or two days won’t make a difference. It’s rare for everyone to be together, so stay a few more days."
The Third Aunt also couldn’t bear to let her daughter go and kept trying to persuade her. "Exactly, let’s all spend some time together."
The Second Aunt came over, having overheard them. "What’s wrong? Is Xiaolan planning to leave?"
"Leave for what? Wait until the fifth or sixth day of the New Year. Give yourself a break for the holidays."
"If we don’t liven things up for the New Year, then when will we?"
The others also chimed in to persuade her, and Lin Xiaolan turned to look at Zhang Kai.
Zhang Kai gave an honest smile. "Don’t look at me—make up your own mind. I’m on holiday until mid-February, so there’s no rush for me."
After that, Lin Xiaolan said no more and agreed to stay for a few more days.
The Third Aunt looked on and felt her heart ache for Wen Wen, who seemed a little out of place among her cousins.
Taking advantage of the moment when Zhang Kai was called away for a card game, mother and daughter went to the restroom for a private conversation.
"How’s Wen Wen’s job hunt going?"
"Still looking. Nothing suitable so far."
"Should I ask Dabao and the others to lend a hand?"
"There’s no need to trouble them."
"How is that trouble? It’s just family helping family. We’ll see if there’s anything suitable, and if not, then so be it." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Lin Xiaolan didn’t respond; there were some things she found difficult to broach.
The Third Aunt continued, "That family... some own companies, others work in government agencies. Their connections are much better than anything you can find, right? Besides, a first-tier city like Jingcheng or Yangcheng offers much more than your fifth-tier city. Once she has a stable job, she can find a boyfriend, get her residency settled, and her life will be better."
Both were mothers planning for their children’s futures. Their hearts were the same.
Of course, Lin Xiaolan wanted her daughter to have a good life, and she was persuaded.
"In that case, I’ll mention it to Zhang Yuxi."
The Third Aunt’s face lit up with relief. She had been worried her daughter would be too proud to ask.
"Good, go talk to them. You can also approach Lin Feng or the four kids."
Lin Xiaolan hesitated. "Let me ask Wen Wen for her thoughts first. What if they agree to help, but Wen Wen doesn’t want it?"
The Third Aunt saw the sense in this. "Alright, go and ask her then."
Lin Xiaolan called her daughter over to discuss the matter.
Wen Wen had no objections. "Sure, moving to another city is fine by me."
She had been facing constant rejection in her job search. The competition was just too fierce. If she could find a job through connections, that would be great.
Lin Xiaolan smiled, realizing her daughter was even more sensible than she had thought. "Then I’ll go and ask."
Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi found playing cards boring and, at Si Bao’s urging, started playing video games instead. Zhang Yuxi was terrible at them, getting eliminated as soon as she landed in the game. After a few rounds, her gaming experience was reduced to zero.
"You guys play," she announced, giving up. "I’ll stick to tile-matching games."
This is fun, and it doesn’t require much brainpower.
After playing a few games, Lin Feng couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia. Back in my youth, I was a gaming ace... until I became a hands-on dad.
"I’m going to the restroom."
Upon his return, Lin Feng was stopped by Lin Xiaolan. "Is something wrong, Cousin Xiaolan?"
Lin Xiaolan looked a little embarrassed. "Um, are you busy right now? There’s something I want to talk to you about."
Lin Feng found a place to sit. "Not at all. Go ahead, what is it?"
Lin Xiaolan got straight to the point. "It’s about Wen Wen. She’s about to graduate from university and is looking for a job everywhere. I was wondering..."
She trailed off, but Lin Feng understood.
"What did Wen Wen major in?"
"Software."
"I see. I’ll leave this to Er Bao. She has her own company and a wide network."
"Great, thank you so much."
"You’re being too polite. No need to thank me."
When Dabao stepped down from the game, Er Bao took his place and reigned as queen.
Then...
She was kicked from the table.
"You guys are ruthless!"
Si Bao, holding a new hand of cards, shot back, "Yeah, and you’re just figuring that out now?"
"You’re all sore losers!" Er Bao retorted.
San Bao just smiled widely. "A little bit!"
Er Bao grumbled, but having won a nice pile, she let it go. "Fine, you all have fun."
She saw Lin Feng give her a look and trotted over.
"Dad, what is it?"
"Your cousin Wen Wen is looking for a job. See if you can find a suitable position for her." Lin Feng added, "It doesn’t have to be at your company. Handle it however you see fit."
Er Bao nodded. "Understood."
Er Bao went to find Wen Wen. The two weren’t that far apart in age, but their presence and temperament were worlds apart. Er Bao wore a light yellow coat, pencil pants, and boots, looking both beautiful and capable. Even when she smiled, she seemed unapproachable, mainly due to her powerful aura.
She reminds me of those hiring managers from my interviews... Wen Wen thought.
Er Bao sat down and asked about her major and whether she wanted to build her career locally or in a first-tier city.
"I want to work in a first-tier city."
"Got it. Leave the job to me. I’ll make a call right now and get back to you."
"Thank you, sis."
"Don’t be so formal. And you should relax and join in the fun."
"Okay."
There’s a faint scent of high-end perfume, so different from the harsh, cheap kind. It smells amazing, Wen Wen thought, looking at her cousin with admiration. The four of them are completely out of my league, an existence so far beyond reach that comparison is impossible.
With her wide network, Er Bao settled the matter with a single phone call.
"They’ve arranged an interview. It shouldn’t be a problem, so don’t worry."
Hearing it was a large company, Wen Wen was incredibly grateful.
Er Bao gave a faint smile. "You’re being too formal. Just work hard, okay?"
With that, she went off to play with Xiao Bao and Mi Fan. The competent air she had before instantly vanished, replaced by a goofy demeanor.
She probably only shows her true self like this in front of family, Wen Wen mused.
Xiao Bao and Mi Fan were the closest. While the adults played cards, they played their own games. The older sister led her little brother, tricking him in all sorts of ways. Mi Fan was adorably clueless and trusted Xiao Bao two hundred percent, believing everything she said no matter how much she was teasing.
Watching them from the side, Er Bao couldn’t stop laughing. It was as if she were seeing her past self in Xiao Bao, remembering how she used to tease her own younger siblings until they were dizzy.
She couldn’t hold back any longer and finally called out to the little boy, giggling. "Oh, my little fool, your sister Xiao Bao is just pulling your leg!"
Dabao’s flight was at seven-thirty that evening. In addition to the family, Lin Dashan and his wife also came to see him off.
At our age, each time we see him might be the last, they thought. We never know which day will be our final one, and we don’t want to leave with any regrets.
What wishes do we still have? Our greatest hope is to see our four grandchildren get married so we can hold a great-grandchild in our arms.
Outside, the atmosphere was festive and lively, but as Zhang Yuxi watched her son board the plane, her heart filled with complex emotions.
"Take care of yourself!" she called out loudly.
Dabao waved, showing he had heard.
On the way back, Zhang Yuxi couldn’t help but feel a bit down.
Dabao was busy in college, but never this busy. To leave before the first day of the New Year is even over...
Lin Feng comforted his wife. "We can just go visit Dabao and the others in Jingcheng later. It’s the same thing."
