Chapter 273: A Surprise Visitor

(Arata)

Mom took me to an appointment with the gynaecologist. I was almost two months pregnant. January had ended and we had stepped foot into February.

There had been a shift in the weather, the freezing cold had been taken over by moderate cool. The flowers had begun to bloom.

I lay on the bed in the doctor’s office as she probed my stomach.

"Your baby is developing right on track! The heartbeat is strong, and everything looks healthy at this stage. This is exactly what we want to see at 8 weeks," the doctor warmly told me, pointing towards the monitor so I could observe the tiny blotch.

My heart swelled seeing the life forming inside me. This baby was going to be so special. He had survived against so many odds.

We used precautions, and yet, somehow, he weaselled his way inside me. I got kidnapped, starved, and dehydrated and yet he survived, desperate to live.

Mom held my hand and squeezed, while we watched the screen, swimming in a sea of emotions.

"Thank you! Doctor. Can you make a diet plan for her so we know what to give her daily and how much is the requirement?" Mom asked.

"Of course!"

After finishing the ultrasound, the doctor gave me a strict diet plan to follow: take a lot of liquids and do morning breathing exercises. She gave me some vitamins and minerals.

"Thank you!" I offered her my gratitude before leaving her office.

Both of us returned to our car. Caysir held the door open for us. He had insisted on coming along and after Karsten told me that it was him who had found the earring, I was forever indebted to this man.

"Thank you! Caysir. Especially for saving my daughter’s life. If there is anything you need, please don’t hesitate," Mom said with gratitude, and he respectfully nodded.

"It was my greatest pleasure." He then turned to me and asked. "Miss Arata, did everything go fine?"

"Yes, Caysir. We both are healthy," I told him with a smile, which he respectfully returned.

We made our way home and Mom asked. "Are you craving something?" I just shook my head.

"You know when I was pregnant with you, your father got all strict with no fast food and only organic diet, fruits and veggies, blah blah," she mimicked him, making me laugh.

I couldn’t help but notice that apart from having a sweet tooth Baba followed a strict diet plan just like Karsten. Another thing they had in common.

Unlike Mom and I, Baba didn’t like eating fast food.

"So I would crave pizza and he would negotiate with me. At times, he would make me pizza himself so I wouldn’t be eating outside food," Mom reminisced with a smile, and I wondered if I would ever have such moments with Karsten.

The pregnancy was supposed to be cherished between two partners and I didn’t want to go through it alone.

The thought of not having him around saddened me.

Mom sensed the shift in my mood and gently asked. "Did you speak to him?"

"No, I fear I won’t be able to resist him if I hear his voice and I don’t want to disappoint Baba." I bit my lower lip to stop it from quivering.

"Oh! Sweetie. I understand. I just wish it was easier but relationships are complicated." She gave me a side hug and the rest of the journey was spent in silence. freewёbnoνel-com

We arrived back home and I saw Baba’s car in the driveway. He was home from the office.

Mom got a call from work so she excused herself.

I found Baba sitting in the garden having tea with someone. The person’s face was turned towards Baba so I couldn’t see who it was.

"Hey! Moonshine, look whom I bumped into on the way back from the office," Baba called out to me.

The head with mousse brown hair turned around and I found Andy staring back at me with a warm smile.

I froze.

My heart lurched and anger seeped inside me.

What was he doing here?

He was married, he shouldn’t be coming here to meet me.

"Hey! Arata." He scrambled to his feet and waited for me to join them.

"Come have a seat...Andy has some news to share," Baba called me forward and I reluctantly obeyed.

"If you are tired, you can always rest; you don’t have to talk to him," Mom whispered, placing a hand on the speaker. Even with the call, she had noticed. But I wanted to hear what he had to say.

"It’s alright, Mom. I want some tea too." Striding forward I adjusted my cap and leaned in to hug Baba.

"How was the appointment?" He carefully asked, rubbing my hand.

"Good," I kept the answer brief.

Taking my seat beside him, I faced Andy.

He only settled down once I was seated.

"How are you, Arata? I just learnt you are back in Angel City," he smiled softly, it didn’t seem like a pretence.

For three years I had loved this man, and now, I felt nothing for him. No butterflies in my stomach, no lurching of my heart at his smile. Not even his gorgeous eyes did anything for me.

"Angel City is my home. I would always return here." Baba handed me a teacup with fresh camomile tea and I graciously accepted.

The aroma calmed down my senses a notch.

"Of course! Of course! I went to meet Uncle Zyair and he told him everything. So I have informed him of Karsten’s involvement in breaking up our engagement and what he did to Ninva," he said with an annoying smile, still thinking it was Karsten.

"He has done nothing but harm," Baba sided with Andy. I could see the difference between them had been resolved. Baba now knew that Andy only betrayed me to save his niece.

"Sorry to disappoint you, Andy, but it wasn’t Karsten that threatened Ninva. It was, in fact, Ranold. The man told me so himself. So stop spreading misinformation. No smart man will send you a voice note in his real voice to get implicated like that. Just think about it," I calmly told him while taking a sip of the tea and he awkwardly smiled.

"Oh!"

I wasn’t going to let him speak shit about Karsten when he wasn’t even involved in this.

"Now that you are back and every misunderstanding has been cleared between us. I was hoping we could speak and resume our relationship," he boldly said, swiping a hand through his thick hair.

That surprised me. Whatever the reasons and circumstances were between our breakup, he was a married man. Why would he want to resume this relationship?

"You are married, Andy."

"That was a fake marriage. I let her go." He leaned in, trying to take my hand like old times, but I placed it in my lap, not wanting to be touched. But I kept my eyes on him.

He only smiled at my actions and gently said.

"You are my future, Arata...give me another chance to prove myself."

Every instinct in my body just screamed, ’No...a bit fat NO.’
