Chapter 740: Chapter 658: Faced Defeat

Huang Shan was in a terrible mood. She had originally thought that Li Li was helping her because of their past relationship, but now her heart felt hollow and despondent. She desperately wanted to know what Li Li truly thought of her. The coldness of his words left her unable to accept them, and the more she dwelled on it, the more bitter her inner turmoil became. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"Could it be that Li Li only cares about my face?"

Staring at her reflection in the makeup mirror, Huang Shan’s mind was adrift with endless thoughts.

She had always known that from the very beginning, Li Li didn’t take her seriously, but deep down, she refused to believe it. She thought that as long as Li Li didn’t give up on her, as long as he was still willing to support her, there could always be a turning point.

"I just want to know, in your heart, what kind of existence am I to you, Li Li? Sometimes, you leave me utterly confused, and other times, you’re so cold to me."

Tilting her head, she was utterly consumed by her helplessness toward Li Li. Her emotions were intensely complex, and the more she thought about it, the more trapped she became. Her assistant approached her quietly with a coffee delivery and gently placed the cup beside her, speaking in a soft voice, "Sister Shan, I’ve left your coffee here. Take a break. Let me know if you need anything."

The assistant had been becoming increasingly cautious over the past few days, terrified of accidentally angering Huang Shan. While she had no desire to serve Huang Shan, the pay and bonuses compelled her to endure. After all, this line of work was inherently difficult to survive in.

"Ugh, the past couple of days have been truly unbearable."

She let out a helpless complaint, and the expressions of the two other junior assistants nearby were filled with similar pitiful resignation.

"Yu, if this keeps up, I think I’m going to have a nervous breakdown."

"Tell me about it. Yu, I honestly admire how you’re still holding on."

The assistant Yu gave a resigned look, spreading her hands open. "Do you think I enjoy serving her? With her impossible personality, how could she expect everyone to cater to her whims? This world is all about stepping on the vulnerable and sucking up to the powerful. She’s in a tough spot now, and if it weren’t for my hard work and the bonuses I rely on, I would’ve stopped serving her long ago."

"Well, we can only grumble about it. If we’re not assistants, how will we survive? Air doesn’t pay the bills, you know."

"Exactly. Ugh." The three of them sighed in exasperation, their discontent impossible to explain in just a few sentences. Their distress couldn’t be alleviated no matter how hard they tried to shake it off, so all they could do was chat with one another to release some pressure.

Meanwhile, Hua Tiantian’s assistant, who had overheard bits of gossip, returned to Hua Tiantian’s room with a gleefully smug expression. She leaned closer to Hua Tiantian and whispered, "Guess what I just heard?"

"Let me guess—another celebrity scandal?"

"Not even close. I overheard Huang Shan’s assistant and two junior assistants venting about how miserable their lives are right now."

Hua Tiantian thought back to Huang Shan’s current predicament, which was indeed bleak. Everywhere she went, people whispered behind her back, pointing fingers at her. Even the staff who used to be close to her were now avoiding her, pretending like she didn’t exist. Her situation could only be described with the phrase "the walls fall when the tree topples," a perfect portrayal of her awkward and isolating position.

"You didn’t join in on their complaints, did you?"

"Of course not. I’ve been so busy running errands for you that I don’t have time for stuff like that. Besides, I’m not even close to Yu and rarely talk to her."

"Good. Make sure you don’t get involved, or else Huang Shan will grab hold of your weaknesses and never let them go."

Hua Tiantian thought to herself: It’s best to steer clear of Huang Shan these days. If I don’t need to talk to her, I won’t say a word. Once the shoot wraps up, I’ll just head straight home, rest, and stay away from trouble.
