The ride back from the lake was quiet. The city lights flickered in the distance, a contrast to the peaceful glow of the moon reflecting against the windshield. Raelynn sat in the passenger seat, her hands resting on her lap, fingers idly playing with the hem of her coat.

She wasn't sure what to say—if she should say anything at all. The air between them was different, warmer, yet fragile. Elion had been unexpectedly kind tonight, bringing her to the lake, telling her in his own way that he wanted her to have good dreams. It left an unfamiliar warmth in her chest, something she wasn't ready to acknowledge.

Elion, on the other hand, kept his eyes on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel loosely. His usual mask of calm in place, but Raelynn had spent enough time with him to notice the subtle things. The slight furrow of his brows. The way his fingers tapped against the wheel, as if lost in thought.

She stole a glance at him before looking away quickly, her heart betraying her with a quickened pace.

The car hummed as it moved through the empty streets. Raelynn let out a small sigh and leaned her head against the window. The night was peaceful—

Until Elion's grip on the wheel tightened.

Raelynn noticed immediately, her body tensing. "What is it?"

He didn't answer right away, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. Then, his jaw clenched. "Hold on."

Before she could react, the car jerked to a sudden stop. Raelynn gasped, thrown slightly forward even with her seatbelt on. Her heart pounded as her eyes darted outside. A black van had swerved in front of them, blocking the road. The headlights were blinding, casting long shadows over the pavement. Her stomach twisted.

"Elion…" Her voice came out hesitant, uncertain.

"Stay in the car."

"What?"

Before she could argue, he was already unbuckling his seatbelt, reaching for the door handle. His movements were precise, controlled, but she could feel the tension radiating from him.

A group of men stepped out of the van. Four of them, all dressed in dark clothing, their faces hidden beneath hooded masks. One of them held a crowbar, another a knife.

Raelynn's heart pounded harder.

"Elion, wait—"

"Lock the doors and stay inside," he said again, not looking at her this time.

She wanted to argue. She really did. But there was something in his voice that stopped her. He wasn't just saying it to be dramatic. He was serious. And that scared her even more.

With a shaky breath, she reached for the door lock just as Elion stepped out.

The cold night air seeped into the car through the cracked window. Raelynn pressed her hands against the seat, watching as Elion faced the men without an ounce of fear. He looked… relaxed. Too relaxed.

One of the men, the one holding the crowbar, took a step forward. "Nice car," he drawled. "Hand over your wallet and whatever else you've got, and we won't have to make this messy."

Elion remained still. "Walk away."

The man chuckled, his grip tightening on the crowbar. "You must not know how this works."

"I do." Elion's voice was smooth, deadly. "That's why I'm telling you. Walk away."

The air shifted. A tense silence followed before one of the others lunged forward.

Raelynn gasped.

Elion moved fast—too fast. One second, the man was swinging, and the next, he was flat on the pavement, groaning in pain. The others reacted instantly, charging at him.

Raelynn's breath hitched as she watched Elion dodge, counter, and strike with effortless precision. It was terrifying how easily he moved, like he had done this a hundred times before. The sharp sound of fists connecting with flesh echoed in the quiet street. One man stumbled back, blood trickling from his nose. Another was already unconscious on the ground.

But in her moment of distraction, she didn't hear the footsteps creeping toward her side of the car.

The sudden shatter of glass made her scream.

Sharp shards rained over her as a hand reached in, grabbing her by the arm. Raelynn gasped, struggling as she was yanked out of the car. Her heart pounded wildly against her ribs. Panic set in as she thrashed against the grip, trying to break free.

"Let go of me!"

The man sneered, tightening his hold. "Shut up."

She flinched as he raised the knife, the silver blade catching the glow of the streetlights.

"Elion—"

A blur of movement. A rush of air.

And then, just as the knife was about to strike, Elion was there.

The blade didn't hit her. Instead, it sliced across his forearm.

Raelynn froze, eyes wide in horror. The metallic scent of blood filled the air.

"Elion!"

Elion didn't even react to the wound. In one motion, he knocked the knife out of the man's hand, grabbed him by the collar, and threw him aside like he weighed nothing. The man hit the ground with a grunt, groaning in pain.

Raelynn staggered back, her breath coming in short gasps. Her gaze darted to Elion's arm, to the blood staining his sleeve.

"Elion, your arm—"

"It's fine," he said, brushing it off like it was nothing.

"It's not fine!" She reached for his arm, barely stopping herself from touching the wound. Her hands trembled. "You're bleeding. We need to go to the hospital."

The last remaining man groaned on the ground, trying to crawl away. Elion shot him a glare that sent him scrambling to his feet, disappearing into the night.

With the danger gone, Raelynn turned back to Elion, her pulse still erratic. "Elion, please. We have to go."

He exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "It's not necessary."

Her eyes burned. "You got hurt because of me. Just—just listen to me for once and let me help you."

A long silence stretched between them. Then, finally, Elion sighed.

"Alright."

Raelynn swallowed, relief washing over her. Without another word, she grabbed his uninjured arm and led him back to the car. Her hands were still shaking as she opened the door for him.

As she slid into the passenger seat, she stole another glance at his injury. Her chest ached at the sight of it.

She had never been more afraid than she was in that moment—seeing him bleed, seeing him hurt. And the terrifying part was, she wasn't sure why it mattered so much.

All she knew was that it did.
