Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Discussing the Divorce

A powerful, suffocating feeling washed over her like a tidal wave.

Stella Sterling felt a chill run from head to toe. It was as if someone had viciously squeezed her heart, stopping the blood flow and leaving it instantly cold.

She never imagined that her own family would stop at nothing to exploit her like this.

All her earlier defiance vanished. She lowered her head slightly, so quiet she was almost nonexistent, numbly listening to Gavin Sterling and the doctor converse.

Gavin Sterling had clearly arranged everything in advance.

That Dr. Finch wasn’t making a diagnosis; he was fawning over him.

He was doing everything he could to help Gavin Sterling with his grand plan of locking Stella away in a hospital.

While they were chatting away cheerfully, Ethan Rhodes came downstairs with his arm around Kiana Sterling.

Madeline Jennings said with feigned concern, "What are you doing down here? You’re not well, you should be resting."

Kiana’s face was pale as she forced a weak smile. "I was worried about Stella. Mom, please don’t be angry with her. We’re all family, there’s nothing we can’t work through. Let’s just sit down and talk this out."

Madeline Jennings snorted. "You’re only thinking of what’s best for her, but she’s a heartless, ungrateful wretch. Kiana, you stay out of this. Leave it to your father."

After they finished their little act, Gavin Sterling finally looked up at Stella. "Stella, be a good girl. Your mother and I don’t want to see you suffer."

’Ha. That was the most ridiculous joke she’d ever heard.’

It was even more laughable when paired with what Madeline Jennings and Kiana had just said.

Stella’s gaze was as still as water. Her beautiful eyes were dim, holding nothing but a chilling coldness.

"What do you want me to do?"

Satisfied with Stella’s sensibility, Gavin Sterling’s expression softened slightly.

"This husband of yours who came out of nowhere, who is he?"

At the thought of Owen Rhodes, a bit of warmth finally returned to Stella’s icy heart.

She was panicking now. Her heartbeat was a chaotic, uncontrolled rhythm, and she even felt short of breath.

She knew her hands were trembling, and her voice would surely be unsteady too.

She took a deep breath, trying to suppress the tremor in her voice.

In this situation, she couldn’t show any fear. If she revealed even a hint of weakness, she could imagine Joel Joyce rushing over to haul her off to the hospital.

She glanced at the man beside Kiana and said coolly, "He’s a man... that Ethan Rhodes could never compare to."

Gavin Sterling was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing.

Once he finished laughing, he said, "I think you’ve really lost your mind, saying anything just to provoke Kiana. A man Ethan could never compare to? Does he exist only in your delusions?"

Stella calmly met his gaze. "Believe it or not."

Gavin Sterling’s face fell. "Divorce him, immediately! Men are all after the same things: money, women, or power. Did you really think you found a good man? Hmph, how foolish!"

"And if I refuse?"

Gavin Sterling said, "I don’t think you’d enjoy a stay at a mental hospital. Go get a divorce. I can give that man anything he wants. If you don’t want to go to the hospital, then do as you’re told!"

Kiana’s eyes reddened again as she weakly pleaded, "Dad, don’t be like this. Stella’s just a girl, you can’t treat her this way..."

Gavin Sterling snorted. "Isn’t she so capable? Hasn’t she gotten too big for her britches? Let’s see how long she can hold out!"

Finished, he looked back at Stella. "Divorce him, or go to the hospital. You choose."

Perhaps it was because Stella looked so fragile at that moment, as if a gust of wind could knock her over, but Ethan Rhodes couldn’t help but frown.

After a moment’s thought, he tried to reason with him. "Sir, is this really necessary?"

Just then, Madeline Jennings tugged on Ethan Rhodes’s sleeve and leaned in to whisper, "We’re doing this for Kiana’s sake. You know her health has always been poor, and you two are engaged. Kiana might get pregnant soon. Pregnancy and childbirth are very dangerous for a woman. What if she hemorrhages during delivery? Kiana has a rare blood type, so we have to plan ahead."

A few words drifted into Stella’s ears.

She knew it. She knew it would come to this.

It was as if she had been born for Kiana’s sake, to serve as her sister’s safety net.

The blood in her veins, the same type as Kiana’s, made her feel utterly disgusted.

But right now, the most important thing was to get out of here.

She took a few deep breaths, her voice a little hoarse when she spoke. "A divorce is between two people; I can’t decide on my own. If he doesn’t agree, nothing you say will matter. You want me to get a divorce? Fine. You can have it, as long as you can convince my husband."

The family was clearly surprised that Stella had given in so quickly.

A smirk played on Gavin Sterling’s lips. It seemed she really was terrified of being locked up in a hospital.

’Good. Now I have one more way to control her.’

’How hard could it be to convince a man to get a divorce?’

’Stella must be out of her mind. Does she really think that convenient husband of hers can stand up to the Sterling Family?’

Gavin Sterling readily agreed. "Fine."

Stella secretly sighed in relief. "Give me my phone. I’ll have him come over now."

Hearing this, Gavin Sterling shot Joel Joyce a look. Joel obediently stepped forward and handed over the purse and phone Stella had left in his car.

Worried she might try something, Gavin Sterling and Chase Sterling walked right up to her, watching her make the call.

The screen lit up, revealing several missed calls on the lock screen.

The father and son glanced at it and saw the contact name: "Mr. Rhodes."

Chase Sterling’s expression turned ugly.

"Mr. Rhodes? Stella, is this really necessary? Did you go out and find a guy with the last name Rhodes on purpose, or did you just change his contact name to that? Don’t you think you’re being a little disgusting?"

Stella said coldly, "More disgusting than this entire family of yours?"

Ignoring them, Stella immediately called Owen Rhodes back.

Owen Rhodes seemed to have been waiting. The call connected after just one ring.

"Why haven’t you been answering your phone?"

A trace of barely perceptible grievance entered her voice as she tattled, "President Sterling and Ms. Jennings dragged me to the Sterling Family home. They want me to divorce you. You—"

Before she could finish, Gavin Sterling snatched the phone away.

"I am Stella’s father. I do not approve of this marriage. Come to my house right now to discuss the divorce. I can give you anything you want, just leave my daughter."

The other end of the line was silent for a few seconds before a clear, deep voice replied, "I’ll be there in ten minutes."

Then he hung up.

Gavin Sterling had a gut feeling that something wasn’t quite right, but before he could think it through, he heard Stella say, "President Sterling, you’re the one who wants me to get this divorce. If you back out later, it won’t be settled with just a few words."

Gavin Sterling scoffed. "Don’t you worry. If I go back on my word, I’ll give you all my shares in the company."

’This little brat, trying to bluff me?’

’Ha. Trying to teach a fish to swim.’

Stella raised an eyebrow and curved her lips into a smile. "Just make sure you don’t."
