Mute Mate: The Alpha's Obsession-Chapter 209: Escape Through the Storm
WHOOSH WHOOSH
The thunder cracked as the ship moved side by side. The rain fell unforgivingly...
"CAPTAIN!! The turbulence getting worse!" A man yelled as the ship moved side by side. The waves splashed loudly as the captain moved, his body soaked with rain, as he turned the stirring of the ship.
"All to the safe house! Nobody outside!" the captain finally yelled loudly as another men guided the people in. They were moving from the vampire land to Eltones and suddenly a storm or heavy rain had erupted. This had never happened before. The way the rain came was so sudden, no signs, and it felt like it was not going to end any time soon.
"Oh no!! We are all gonna die!!" A man screamed, one of the people that was moving down to the lower stairs. People moved quickly as the young ones moved through the main door as they were meant to be kept safe.
"Captain! The weather seem to get worse, can we make it?" he spoke as goosebumps had already moved on his body, the sharp rain hitting his head as the wind slapped his face. His hands held the woods for support. Everyone was safe inside for shelter. The other men were still outside as they were arranging the place, pouring the water back into the ocean.
The man stared at his brother, the captain. His face had a sharp scar on the left side of his face while his brother had an eye patch on his right eye. Ever since the both started this, something like this had never happened. Yes, there had occurred storms but this was only promising one thing.
DEATH
He gave his brother one last glance and chose not to disturb him as he was busy. He turned to the workers.
"More workers outside! Pack the water quickly... you there!" he pointed at a worker who immediately dropped his bucket and bowed.
"Call the other two. They should go down and cover the ceiling which water leaks from," he ordered as the man bowed respectfully before he left immediately.
The thunder cracked once more.
☆☆☆☆
Deep inside the water, a girl not older than fifteen sat by the window in tears. Knowing that her father had not chosen her was not just painful but disheartening as well. She understood that her father wanted to pick one but still, he was king and he could simply change the rules.
Why pick one? What was even wrong about two royals? The more she cried, the more pebbles fell on the floor. She wagged her tail as she moved to her bed and laid. She could not even leave given she had been locked up by the guards.
Not only was the door locked, the window as well. Mermaids could leave through the window but her father, when he grounded her, was not the kind to do it as he knew she was scared of height but still, he had just done it. She knew her father never liked her because of her slowness to adapt.
She always had a hard time remembering instructions. On the other hand, her twin sister was perfect. She did things so well—an elegant royal. And when it was time to go for family events, she was the kind who stayed in her room. No one knew her. Sometimes she was even called her sister’s name, and she could not remember when last her father had called her by her name.
She kept crying. At this point she did not care if she lost her voice. All she knew was that she was hurt. She felt lonely...
The clicking of the door finally sounded as she sat up immediately, her blue eyes moving downwards as her tail wagged gently.
Fear crept into her bones as she guessed that must be her father. Nobody was supposed to be here. The maids had already brought food and it was not time for her flower picking. So if anyone came at a time other than that, it meant it was her father and she was in big trouble.
The door opened as her heart skipped in fear.
"Oh my sweetie." The girl finally raised up her head as she stared at her mother. A sigh of relief escaped her lips. She knew it was only her mother who made her feel less lonely, and her mother was always busy but when she had free time, it was her she met.
"Mama..." Her blue glistening eyes finally poured with tears as she stared at her mother before she swam and hugged her. Unlike her eyes, all the royal family had hazel eyes except the king.
She was not supposed to have blue and her having it changed history, but it seems that annoyed her father. Her twin sister—they looked alike except the eyes and sometimes she wondered if the reason why her father called her by her sister’s name, despite the eye color difference, was because he must have forgotten her name.
Unlike her sister who could talk to her father freely, if she wanted to, she had to lower her head.
"M-Mother, I am t..tired..." she spoke in trembling shoulders as her mother hugged her. Her mother looked young and that was one thing about mermaids—they rarely age.
"Oh my sweetie... don’t cry please," she spoke as she moved her gaze to the door. A tear fell from her cheeks as she hugged her daughter tighter, knowing she was about to make a very risky and deadly move, but she needed to do it as that was the only way to save her daughter. And now her husband had left for a little sword fight with their eldest son—this was her plan, the plan.
She pulled away from her daughter gently as she spoke softly, her hands gently caressing her cheeks, wiping the tears away.
"My child, mama knows what best. I want you to live a better life and I feel pain seeing you like this and I can do nothing about it," she spoke as the little girl nodded with a small smile, the hatred for her father growing. She knew her mother loved them but one thing she hated was when her father yelled at her mother for speaking or giving a suggestion.
Women’s words were insignificant in the mermaid world. Not even the queen’s word mattered.
"Tell me sweetie, do you want to go to the h..human w..world?" her words broke as she knew even though it sounded not so safe, that was the only thing she could do right now before her husband kills her daughter.
"H-human?" her voice grew as her mother’s eyes widened. Her mother was carrying a bag, it was closed.
The woman looked slightly shocked by the way her daughter’s eyes lit. She did not know if she should be happy right now because this way she could freely carry out her plan and save her daughter. She was guessing the books her daughter loved reading, the human books, had made the little girl now like humans.
"Yes, human. Mama wants to protect you. She would take you there. Never tell them you are a mermaid. Never reveal your tail. Once you stay there, your tail would not come out again after a year of no swimming. Please, my sweetie." The girl nodded. She knew her mother was trying to save her, but still, it hurt that she was causing her mother a burden.
"Yes mama," she nodded as she held back her tears.
"Don’t cry my daughter," her mother softly spoke as the girl managed a nod. She nodded as she held her daughter’s hand. She moved to the window. She took the key and unlocked it. The girl’s body shook in fear as her mother gave her a reassuring nod. She held her mother’s hand as the window opened. The lady tightened her arms around her daughter tightly as she wagged her tail. She held the other bag in her arms tightly. The girl shut her eyes tightly as she swam as well, scared of looking down. They kept swimming high.
Time passed as they swam high, her eyes still shut, until she heard her mother speak.
"I love you and always will. Remember that. If I come with you, your father would be able to trace my scent so go alone. Be a good girl and make me proud," she spoke as the girl gasped, her eyes opening. She was finally at the shore. She coughed as the wave crashed on them. The rain was getting heavier as it hit their heads. The lady turned around, her eyes widening as a ship was moving just in their direction. The lady pulled her daughter inside the ocean. The thunder cracked as the dark clouds rumbled. The ship moved above them.
"Don’t move darling, don’t move until it passes," she spoke as the girl nodded, following her mother’s lead. Her mother then spoke softly.
"Thank the stars there is a ship. You will follow the ship." The girl nodded. She knew her mother was telling her the best, so that was why she listened. This was for her own safety.
The ship passed. Her mother held her hands as they moved to the shore. The harsh rain drops hit their skin as they moved quickly. Her mother gasped softly for air as the rain splashed on her face, followed by a little wave.
WHOOSH....PASHH
The hersh sound of the ocean moved. As the lady looked up, she noticed a small window.
"I will take you up, you move, okay?" she spoke.
"Yes, mama," the girl replied, her red hair stuck to her shoulders.
The lady moved and jacked her up. She muttered something, and her legs returned. She muttered again, and the girl’s legs came. A loud gasp escaped the girl’s lips as she stared at her legs. Her gown, low, covered her legs, her body clinging wet.
They moved as her mother pushed her up. She tried to hold the bag tight as well, not to lose it.
Finally, they reached the window. As the lady pushed it, she held the other hand on the window for support while holding the girl. She was glad they had been careless and had left it unlocked.
"Go on, sweetie," she guided her daughter in as she handed her the bag. It was filled with fruits—different fruits.
"Manage this. You will reach land in not less than two days. I love you."
The girl nodded as tears fell. Her mother gave her a calm look, holding back her own tears. Her eyes softly met her daughter’s as she now stood in a small storage room.
"Bye-bye," the lady spoke as she jumped back into the water.
The thunder cracked again.
The lady waved with a smile as the girl stood waving back with tears. No pebble remained—the girl’s mother had cast it away.
But just as her mother gave the last wave—
"MERMAID!!"
Somebody screamed from above, and before she knew it, an arrow flew.
SWOOSH
It stabbed the lady in her tail. Blood gushed out.
"MAMA!!" the little girl screamed, pain ripping through her soul.
