Chapter 272: “Humble” Succession Ceremony

While Anji was forced to recuperate and rest on Doctor Yun’s orders, the Mytical Qilin Sect became three times busier.

Yan Ping declared on the day of Anji’s return that they would host a ’humble’ succession ceremony. It was only humble in comparison to Anji’s meritorious achievements. Although Yan Ping had dismissed most of the succession officiation ceremony’s traditions, a few still remained.

Anji had grown a little taller in the year that she spent in the successor’s trials. As a double celebration with her birthday, the Mystical Qilin Sect invited guests from outside to participate in the banquet as witnesses. New robes for the banquet and succession ceremony were being made. A large open garden was being transformed for a reception, as the pavilion was occupied for emergency patients due to the ongoing war. Yan Ping did not want a huge crowd, so none of the Elders were mandated to attend the assembly. However, four of six Elders insisted on not missing it.

Without the ancestral worship, long rites and speeches about the successor’s conduct and vows, the ceremony was cut from four hours to an hour. Anji could not be more thankful for the short ceremony. The only thing Anji needed to do was to offer incense to the sect’s spiritual altar and kowtow three times in front of everyone in the successor’s outer robe that Yan Ping would publicly adorn for her. After paying respects, Anji would receive her new token from Yan Ping that would give her the same access and rights as the sect leader as the successor. As Anji was too young and not of age to succeed Yan Ping, there was no need for a stepping-down ceremony or a sect handover ceremony. The banquet was the only thing left after all the rites.

It was a ’humble’ ceremony, but no less tedious in Anji’s opinion.

Despite her personal reluctance for such grandiose, the Mystical Qilin Sect was in high spirits. Even in the middle of a war, Anji’s news brought new hope to everyone. With such a talented and capable successor, the Mystical Qilin Sect’s reputation as an unshakeable fortress raised morale for those on the battlefield. It was not a secret that Anji would be personally participating in the war alongside her family from the Celestial Dragon Sect.

When Anji saw the names on the guest list, her eyes widened. After two weeks of light exposure therapy, she could now read again and use her physical eyes as much as she wanted.

"This is my third brother," she pointed out. "Are you sure Brother Yihao is coming instead of Brother Mingshen?"

Gu Ying, who had also recently broken through to the Radiant Core at last, nodded.

"Almost as soon as you started the successor trials, the third young master emerged from his isolation training as an expert with the Enlightened Core. Seeing his progress, it was clear to me that I needed to improve as well to remain as your bodyguard."

Hearing the update on everyone’s progress, Anji wondered if her second brother felt left behind. Anji was already at the peak of Solid Core, a little ahead of Mingshen, who was stagnant at the intermediate stage of Solid Core. Gu Ying had already broken into the Radiant Core stage while Yihao was considered a cultivation genius for reaching the Enlightened Core at his age and overcoming his extreme Yang body. Nobody else was prouder of his achievement than Bai Dajin. He was so happy with Yihao’s accomplishment that he gifted Yihao a special martial arts manual worth more than gold could ever buy, specifically tailored to those with extreme yang bodies.

Almost as if time had unfrozen, Anji found it difficult to keep up with all the changes. In between preparing for the succession ceremony and receiving thanks, Anji was also summoned frequently by Yan Ping. They had a lot to discuss now that she was an accepted successor of the sect.

"I’ve added a tracking spell to your token," she informed Anji one evening after work. "If you are ever in danger, it will let me know where you are. Shifu will come to rescue you. So don’t do anything too dangerous. No matter how far you are, I will come over with everything I have. Nothing is more important than your safety. Even if you are my successor, you are still someone’s daughter."

On that topic, Yan Ping gifted Anji a hat similar to what she normally wore. It was a straw hat with a long white veil fitted to Anji’s head.

"Take this. Keep it with your luggage when you travel. Do not wear it unless you are representing the Mystical Qilin Sect’s official business. Researcher Hu added a newly developed short-term item summoning spell to this."

Anji chuckled. Senior Researcher Ke was still as scatter-brained as she was. Assistant Hu, who continued to remain by her side even after his promotion, had to develop new methods of containing her chaos. It was such a useful spell modification that even the librarians and medical assistants were using it to keep track of important items or grab emergency supplies with the snap of their fingers.

"Anji understands," she replied. "I will be travelling as Zhao Anji, the fourth daughter of the Celestial Dragon Sect, until I have found Pu Jianming. Shifu, what do you wish to do if I find him first?" 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

According to the Mystical Qilin Sect, traitors were expelled. However, anyone who has colluded with the demonic faction will not be exempt from death. If possible, Yan Ping did not wish to see Anji carry out the execution with her hands.

"Pass judgment as the sect’s successor and seal his ability to use any spells. Break his spiritual core if you must, but do not kill him. I will handle it from there. You must still abide by the code of a doctor because you swore an oath to Doctor He."

To break another person’s golden core, Anji must use a forbidden spell from the forbidden library.

"Shifu, is that really ok? Breaking or sealing a person’s cultivation level is a forbidden spell."

Yan Ping did not agree readily. Instead, she dodged the question.

"We must do what we can. If anyone has to be blamed, shifu will handle it. You’re simply obeying orders."

It went unsaid, but Anji respected her teacher’s decisions. No matter how many reincarnations she lived, she was still just a child. Even if Yan Ping learned about Anji’s history, nothing would change between them.

"Ci Wang has received the order," she bowed in reply.

Satisfied, Yan Ping stood up.

"Rest well now and take care of packing your luggage. I heard that your second brother wants you to leave immediately after the banquet tomorrow with your bodyguard."

Anji giggled.

"Yes, shifu. My second brother can’t wait to reunite with me, but he is preoccupied with the Gentleman Club, so he begged my third brother to come with gifts in his place and also a few horses for our departure."

Shaking her head fondly at the Celestial Dragon Sect’s family antics, Yan Ping left with a huff. Anji continued to giggle long after her shifu’s figure had disappeared into the night.
