Mrs Fox Heinous Revenge: Can You Love A Villainess like Me?-Chapter 298: A Murder’s Past-I
A part of her soul felt as though it had been violently torn from her body. AiLin stood frozen in the corner of the room, unmoving, her hands hanging stiffly by her sides. There were no tears in her eyes, yet the grief and shock clinging to her were unmistakable. Anyone who looked at her could see it clearly, the hollow stillness of someone whose world had just collapsed. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
She slowly raised a hand to cover her mouth, her breathing shallow as the image she had seen replayed endlessly in her mind. It was only when YueLan gently shook her shoulders that she seemed to regain a fragment of awareness. His voice was careful, low, as if afraid she might shatter at any moment. "The detectives want to talk to you now."
AiLin’s unfocused gaze drifted past him and landed on Mrs. Jiang. The woman was sobbing uncontrollably, clutching Jiang NianNian with trembling hands as her cries turned hoarse and broken. A doctor stood nearby, checking her condition as she wheezed and gasped for air. To an outsider, it was a pitiful sight. Yet YueLan watched the scene with nothing but skepticism tightening his chest.
How could he not?
Unlike AiLin, who gained nothing from the sudden death of Grandmother LinLin, these people stood to benefit greatly. They had always despised the idea of AiLin inheriting everything from Grandmother LinLin. YueLan did not know the full extent of what they would gain now, but one thing was certain, only they would profit from her death.
When AiLin finally began to walk, supported by YueLan’s steady presence, a soft but venomous voice drifted through the room. "Killer."
AiLin slowly turned her head toward Jiang NianNian. There was no shock on her face, no anger either, only a chilling blankness. Jiang NianNian scoffed, her eyes burning as she continued, "Isn’t this what you wanted? Grandmother’s death. You have always hated her. And you were the last person who saw her!"
AiLin stared at her for a long moment before a slow, humorless smile curved her lips. "I hated her?" She closed her eyes briefly, then looked toward Mrs. Jiang. "If we’re talking about hate, I don’t think I could ever compare to any of you."
Jiang MengYao’s expression darkened. He stood abruptly, his towering figure casting a shadow as he glared down at her. "What do you mean?" His sharp tone once would have been enough to make her flinch, but this time YueLan stepped forward, positioning himself firmly between them. His presence alone reminded AiLin that she was no longer alone.
"What do I mean?" AiLin repeated softly, then let out a quiet chuckle. "I have more than enough reasons to dislike every one of you. But you..." Her gaze locked onto Jiang MengYao, sharp and unyielding. "You’re different, aren’t you?"
The detectives nearby made no attempt to interrupt. Situations like this often revealed cracks in carefully maintained facades, and they watched in silence as AiLin raised her hand and pointed first at Jiang NianNian.
"When Grandmother LinLin didn’t give you what you wanted, you threw tantrums. When tantrums stopped working, you learned resentment instead. You hated her for refusing you. There were times you even wished she would die."
Jiang NianNian’s throat bobbed as the attention in the room shifted toward her. She snapped back immediately, her voice strained. "I can get angry, can’t I? That doesn’t mean I despised my grandmother or wanted her dead!"
"Then what about your arguments with her?" AiLin pressed calmly. "You wanted her inheritance more than anyone."
"I wouldn’t kill her for inheritance!" Jiang NianNian shouted, her face flushing. "I’m not you! I’m not a killer, and I’ve never stained my hands with blood. But everyone knows you have, haven’t you?"
The room fell into a suffocating silence. AiLin could feel the weight of countless gazes pressing down on her, heavy and judgmental, as though she had committed the crime right in front of them. Their suspicion should have hurt. It should have carved into her chest and left her trembling with indignation. Yet strangely, it didn’t anymore. Whatever pain that once came from being doubted had long since dulled, worn down by experience.
"Miss AiLin," a voice called calmly.
A detective stepped forward, his polished shoes echoing faintly against the floor. There was a courteous smile on his face, one that appeared practiced and detached, entirely unfazed by the chaos that had unfolded moments ago. "I’m glad to see you again."
AiLin frowned, her eyes narrowing as she studied him closely. At first, his face seemed unfamiliar, but the longer she looked, the clearer her realization became. Her breath hitched slightly.
Of course.
He was the detective’s assistant from before.
The very same one who had been present when she was accused in the past.
What a coincidence, if coincidence was even the right word. Seeing him here again felt less like chance and more like an ominous sign mocking her fate. Last time, it had been the same investigative team handling the murder case she was dragged into. No one had doubted her guilt then, even though she had been barely conscious, barely alive, bleeding out while clinging to survival. That detail had been conveniently ignored, likely brushed aside with money and influence from the Jiang family.
This time, however, AiLin felt no fear.
What filled her instead was a quiet, simmering resolve.
She wanted to see just how far they would dare to push her.
"I can tell you’re not pleased to see me," the detective continued evenly, gaze so unpredictably ominous. "But I hope you won’t mind stepping into another room to answer a few questions."
"I don’t really have a choice, do I?" AiLin replied coolly. Her gaze shifted briefly to YueLan, signaling him to contact their lawyer immediately.
"I would advise against refusing," the detective said, his tone suddenly layered with something darker, unpredictable, almost threatening beneath its politeness. "It will only be a few questions. And if there’s anything you prefer not to answer, we’ll respect that." He paused, then added, "This would also help prevent people here from immediately suspecting you. I believe it would be... beneficial."
AiLin slowly nodded after she had cued YueLan not to get involved.
"I also want to see," she spoke aloud, "Who was it who dares to kill my grandmother. If with my help you can find the killer, I’ll lend you all of it."
