Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 699: I Don’t Want to Go Back
The loudspeaker announced to everyone to follow the instructions of the safety channel and orderly board the lifeboats to leave.
But in the rush to escape, there was no order at all, with everyone swaying and stumbling, just like the objects in the room, falling and toppling over.
Screams, shouts, cries...
The scene was so chaotic that it was uncontrollable.
Jasper Jones led Vanessa and Audrey Sutton, climbing up along the slope of the tilting ship.
Jasper Jones reached out swiftly and grabbed the railing to steady himself, but Audrey Sutton and Vanessa lacked some strength and appeared to struggle.
"Give me your hand."
Vanessa looked at Jasper Jones and hurriedly reached out her hand, grasping onto Jasper’s strength. Vanessa successfully grabbed the railing too.
Just as Jasper was about to grab Audrey Sutton, the ship shook again, tilting further, sending Audrey even farther away.
"Audrey!"
Afraid that the ship would completely capsize, which would make it impossible for Jasper and Vanessa to escape, Audrey, deep down, feared water and was naturally panicked facing such a situation for the first time.
But suddenly, Shane Warner’s voice echoed in her mind, his encouraging words when he taught her to swim.
She reminded herself that she could swim and shouldn’t be afraid or panic.
"Brother Jones, Vanessa can’t swim. Just take care of her. I’ll find a way myself. You two go quickly!"
As soon as she finished speaking, two explosions followed closely. The ship’s tilting speed increased, smoke rolled inside the cabin, and seawater began to rise.
"Audrey!"
Jasper, seeing Audrey struggling to hold onto something to steady herself, and after glancing at Vanessa, quickly said, "We’ll go first. You go out, and I’ll rescue Audrey."
Jasper climbed to the railing and removed a lifeboat, throwing it down.
Then he pulled Vanessa up, quickly checking to ensure the life jacket on Vanessa was secured, and said, "Vanessa, slide down this way. Don’t be afraid, with the life jacket, I’ll go find Audrey."
But before Jasper could turn back, the ship completely lost balance due to a giant whale crashing into the sea, creating huge waves, with seawater violently flooding the cabin, disorienting and sweeping away people escaping from the cabin.
Jasper was swept into the waves, quickly surfaced with the buoyancy of the life jacket, and saw the lifeboat he had thrown nearby in the distance.
"Vanessa!"
"Vanessa!"
The distance between Vanessa and the lifeboat was not far, and even if scattered by the waves, she should still be near the lifeboat.
Hearing Audrey say Vanessa couldn’t swim, Jasper anxiously swam over to find Vanessa, suddenly spotting a conspicuous orange-red color waving at him near the lifeboat: "I’m fine! You go find Audrey!"
Confirming Vanessa was safe, Jasper immediately dove back into the water to search...
Most people had timely put on life jackets, and almost everyone who escaped the cabin was safe.
But now the ship was nearly fully submerged, and those trapped inside, if unable to find an exit, might not survive long, even with life jackets, before drowning.
Holding her breath, Audrey Sutton was confused as the water rushed in when the ship tilted, leaving her disoriented and unable to move autonomously.
After the ship tilted, she found a direction to swim, but she didn’t know where she was, with low visibility underwater.
Relying on a general direction, she groped and found a window, swimming out with effort, but outside was still turbid seawater filled with debris.
Severe oxygen deprivation forced Audrey to open her mouth and nose, inhaling seawater, forming a string of bubbles.
Struggling, she gradually lost consciousness, vaguely seeing a dark figure swimming towards her... 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Jasper lifted Audrey Sutton, using the buoyancy of the life jacket to surface.
"Audrey, Audrey, wake up."
Audrey Sutton didn’t respond.
Vanessa lay on the lifeboat, paddling with her hands in the water, urgently sliding toward the two.
Jasper held up Audrey, and Vanessa helped to pull Audrey onto the lifeboat, where Jasper climbed aboard, calmly performing CPR on Audrey Sutton...
"Cough, cough—"
Audrey Sutton choked out water, slowly opening her eyes.
Vanessa smiled relieved: "Audrey, are you okay?"
Seeing Vanessa safe, Audrey also smiled reassuringly.
Jasper asked, "Audrey, did you see many trapped people inside?"
Audrey shook her head: "It was too chaotic, I couldn’t see the situation below at all, I don’t even know how I got out."
"I’ll go back down to check," Jasper said, preparing to dive back in. Vanessa suddenly grabbed him, worriedly saying, "Don’t go, the ship might still explode, and you don’t know the situation down below. It’s too dangerous."
Audrey looked at the thick smoke emerging from the seawater, debris floating on the surface, and through the fog, she could vaguely see chaotic crowds approaching other lifeboats.
It was apparent that most had escaped, but not everyone was so lucky...
Jasper took a deep breath, hearing Vanessa’s words, gave up diving again, saying, "The rescuers should be arriving soon, let’s just wait here."
Audrey calmed herself, sitting in the rain and mist shivering with cold, still feeling a sense of lingering fear...
Nearby rescuers rushed to the scene promptly, with media reporters providing live coverage.
Shane Warner, upon seeing the ship’s name on TV, turned it off immediately, took Anna to The Suttons, and hurried to the dock near the rescue team...
At sea, helicopters and rescue boats searched the waters.
Jasper prepared to row towards the rescuers, but Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm, stopping his rowing motion.
"What’s wrong, Vanessa?"
Both Jasper and Audrey Sutton looked back at Vanessa. Vanessa pursed her lips hesitantly but suddenly became firm, saying, "I don’t want to go back."
"What do you mean?" Jasper, unaware of Vanessa’s family situation, was puzzled by her words.
Vanessa said, "I remember there are many small islands nearby, and I think I can hide on an island, just let him believe I’m dead."
Understanding Vanessa’s meaning, Audrey was still a bit surprised by her sudden decision: "Vanessa..."
With trembling voice, Vanessa said, "I think this might be my only chance to escape him, I don’t want to go back."
Audrey said, "Miles Sterling will definitely look for you everywhere. You might have to hide on the island and never be able to leave."
Vanessa took a deep breath, saying, "As long as he’s not there, it’s fine."
Though Jasper didn’t know who Vanessa meant by ’him,’ he roughly understood her intent and did not inquire further, simply saying, "Going alone is too dangerous, I’ll go with you."
