Chapter 540: Chapter 540: Your Husband Didn’t Underestimate You

That noon, Shane went out to discuss business. It was raining outside, so Audrey Sutton and Barry Barrett went to the company restaurant.

"Audrey, I say it’s been days, and we haven’t got any clues. I think maybe we should just tell your husband and have him look into the accounts."

Audrey sipped her soup and said, "No, he already underestimates me. This time, I have to catch these people’s fox tails myself and let him know I’m not here to fool around."

Barry asked, "Then what do you plan to do?"

Audrey thought for a moment and said, "If it can’t be done openly, we’ll go covertly."

Saying this, Audrey gestured to Barry, and when Barry leaned in, she whispered her plan into his ear.

Barry, after hearing it, twitched the corner of his mouth, unable to resist commenting, "I don’t think your husband underestimates you, your plan is really lousy."

Audrey: "Lousy or not, as long as it works. We want the result, the process isn’t important. No time like the present; it seems like there won’t be anyone in the office at this time. Let’s eat quickly and hurry to set things up." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Barry: "Today? Where are we going to get the tools?"

Audrey thought for a moment and said, "I’ll call Brother Seraphina, she’s well-connected in this area and can definitely get them."

Twenty minutes later, Audrey and Barry met Seraphina Vaughn in the underground garage.

They looked around stealthily to confirm no one was nearby before hurriedly getting into Seraphina’s car.

"Brother Seraphina, where’s the stuff?"

Seraphina rummaged through her pocket as she said, "Why do you need this stuff?"

Audrey: "I’ll explain it to you slowly when we have time; we are in a hurry now."

Seraphina pulled out a small screw about one centimeter in size.

Barry looked at it, puzzled, and asked, "What is this?"

Seraphina: "It’s a pinhole camera. I’ve checked, and it’s small. Even if found, others won’t realize it’s a camera, so it’s safe."

Audrey reached out to take it, inspected it, and smiled satisfactorily, "Nice, Brother Seraphina."

Seraphina also pulled out a lipstick from her bag and said to Audrey, "This was bought in the color you mentioned. It’s a genuine lipstick, but the base has been modified for recording."

Audrey twisted it open to take a look. On the surface, it looked just like an ordinary lipstick.

Then Audrey took out a tissue and swiped the lipstick a few times, saying, "I’ve seen Joy’s lipstick; she’s almost out. When we go up later, find an opportunity to swap them."

Barry swallowed hard and said, "You’ve got me a bit nervous."

Audrey, holding both items, quickly said, "Quick, there shouldn’t be many people in the office at this time; let’s go install the camera first."

Seraphina: "My brother is adjusting the recording device; he’ll save the footage and audio and send it to you later."

Audrey: "Brother Seraphina is reliable. We’ll head up to install the camera now."

Seraphina: "Remember to transfer the money to me! These things aren’t cheap!"

Audrey had already opened the door and got out of the car, pulling Barry along while softly telling Seraphina, "We’ll talk about it later!"

There were fifty minutes left until the afternoon work began.

The lunch break was long, those whose homes were nearby would go back for a nap, while those farther away wouldn’t spend their break time in the office, preferring even the company café for chatting instead.

When Audrey and Barry entered, the large office was completely empty, while a few people were occasionally visible walking in the corridor from other departments.

"Bear, keep an eye on the door; cough if anyone comes."

Barry, doing this for the first time, felt especially uneasy: "Audrey, are you sure we can do this? My palms are sweaty."

Audrey: "I’ll just place the camera inside their office; it’ll be quick."

Barry checked both ends of the corridor, seeing no one coming, swallowed hard, "Then hurry up."

The director’s office was separated from the outside by a layer of frosted glass, and the minister’s office was a separate room next door.

Audrey was coming to their office for the first time, pushed the door open, and found a computer on each desk, with the one by the door still on, showing a default desktop screen.

Audrey thought such an openly displayed computer probably wouldn’t have anything incriminating.

Moreover, these were seasoned veterans; they must have been making fake accounts for more than just a few days, since previous audits hadn’t found anything. It indicated that they’d certainly taken dual precautions.

Chances were, the illicit stuff wouldn’t be in this office at all.

"Ahem—"

Outside, Barry’s cough could be heard, prompting Audrey to quickly stop surveying and head over to place the little screw on the file cabinet by the wall. From that angle, you could clearly see the direction of the desks in the office.

"Ahem—ahem—"

Barry’s coughing intensified, and Audrey hurriedly tried to leave but accidentally knocked over a pen holder placed on the desk.

Next, she heard Barry’s voice outside, "Director Quinne, why are you at work so early?"

Flustered, Audrey crouched to pick up the fallen pens as she heard Director Quinne reply, "Having nothing to do after lunch, and there’s still plenty of work from this morning unfinished, so I came over early."

Seeing Director Quinne approaching the office, Barry hurried forward to block him, "Oh, Director Quinne..."

"What’s wrong? Is there anything I can help you with?"

Feeling guilty, Barry glanced at the director’s office, knowing that Audrey was inside. If she didn’t divert Director Quinne, they’d surely be exposed.

Barry, already timid by nature, felt extremely uneasy before the operation and now was caught in a dilemma: "Well... Director Quinne, I heard there’s a new coffee downstairs, care to join me for a taste? My treat."

Director Quinne glanced at Barry, noting her flushed face and stammering speech. He didn’t realize Barry was nervous and guilty, merely assuming Barry was shy.

He could tell this young woman was interested in him.

After a moment of thoughtful pause, Director Quinne said, "Alright. Let’s go. But I usually see you together with the lady, why are you alone today?"

Barry laughed awkwardly, "...Oh, she’s probably off with President Warner; where would she have time for me?"

Chatting away, Barry and Director Quinne walked side by side out of the office.

When silence returned outside, the hidden Audrey finally breathed a sigh of relief and hastily pushed the door open to leave.

No one was in the office, and she couldn’t linger any longer, fearing suspicion if seen later.

Her hand slipped into her clothes pocket, feeling the lipstick inside, as she contemplated how to put it into Joy’s bag.
