Chapter 241: Chapter 241: Zachary Zane

A prison guard looked at Seraphina Redgrave and suddenly exclaimed, "I remember you! The student personally praised by the President! And you founded The Defiance Society, you’re amazing!"

The two prison guards chatted excitedly, except for the man they were escorting, who kept his head lowered, as if disconnected from this world.

"He is..."

Seraphina feigned confusion, quickly glancing at the man.

"Wasn’t there a new amendment announced before? Anyone who escapes from Veridian Isle is sentenced to death."

"This man escaped from there, and we’re just planning to take him for his last meal," a prison guard explained.

Last meal?

Is the execution happening today?

Seraphina’s fingers turned white from gripping tightly, a suffocating feeling surged inside her, yet her expression remained unchanged, "What a coincidence, Councilor Everett asked me to write an essay on Veridian Isle, and I was worried about having no material. Since I met him today, could I borrow him for an interview?"

"He’s a vicious criminal who escaped from Veridian Isle, we worry you might not be able to handle him."

The prison guard slapped his hand in disgust, merely touching such people made him feel dirty.

"It’s fine, I have a sense of propriety. I’ll just ask a few simple questions, hoping you both could help out; it won’t take much time."

Seraphina softened her tone.

The Law Council is like a deity in Z country, they have no reason to antagonize someone from the Law Council over this trivial matter, especially such a beautiful girl.

The two prison guards did not refuse any further, "Alright, just don’t take too long, or it’ll delay his departure."

"Okay,"

Seraphina responded.

She looked at the man with a touch of concern in her eyes, but he just kept his head down, as if the topic was not about him.

Seraphina followed behind the two prison guards into a bare room, on the table was a bowl of thick noodles.

This was his last meal, so simple.

Seraphina was a bit reluctant, took out a large stack of cash from her bag, and handed it to them saying, "Could you make him a better meal?"

"You want to buy him a meal?" The prison guard thought Seraphina was being redundant.

"Consider it interview payment, let him have some good memory for the last time,"

Seraphina explained, then stuffed the money into the guard’s hand, "Add a chicken drumstick."

The guard looked at the thick stack of money in his hand, feeling delighted inside; this stack of cash could buy hundreds of chicken drumsticks, who would get the leftover money was self-evident.

"You’re really kind, so we’ll add a chicken drumstick. I’ll get him something better to eat." The guard who received the money left satisfied.

"Don’t know what luck you have, getting to eat chicken before dying and chatting with such a pretty girl," the other guard who didn’t receive money said harshly, "Behave yourself on the brink of death, don’t cause any trouble."

After saying that, he brought a chair next to Seraphina, then left to guard the door.

Once Seraphina ensured no one else was paying attention, she walked to the chair and sat down, looking at the man in front of her.

The man slowly lifted his head, his scarlet eyes full of complex emotions.

Then he smiled, a relieved smile, "Long time no see, Seraphina."

His voice was extremely hoarse, as if smoked by thick fumes.

Hearing this familiar voice, a tide of memories overwhelmed her heart instantly.

Seraphina almost couldn’t control her emotions, wanting to break down and cry.

"Brother Zack, I thought you were gone." Through her trembling voice, her restraint could be heard.

Zachary Zane, 29 years old, a descendant of the Veridian Isle people, was fitted with electronic handcuffs at just 14. Because the cuffs couldn’t expand, Zachary’s hand couldn’t develop, deforming his wrist beyond recognition.

He never left Veridian Isle, was very open-hearted and cheerful, liked to smile.

When Seraphina first arrived on Veridian Isle, she was filled with despair, wanting to go home, so every night she stood alone at the seaside looking into the distance.

Once, Zachary happened to come out strolling around, saw Seraphina standing at the seaside alone, thought she wanted to end her life, and rushed over intending to drag her away from the waves.

Ended up not controlling his strength well, fell into the sea, and unfortunately his leg cramped.

In the end, it was Seraphina who jumped into the sea and saved Zachary.

Since then, no matter how much Seraphina refused, Zachary was determined to treat her as his savior, carefully teaching her how to survive on the island.

As a return, Seraphina would tell Zachary stories about the world outside, and the more he listened, the stronger his curiosity grew to see the outside world.

About a year later, Zachary carved his farewell letter on a rock, saying he wanted to see something new.

He could only rely on swimming to escape the island.

Seraphina told him no one could escape, patrolling forces outside would shoot them dead.

He couldn’t possibly get away.

But Zachary wouldn’t listen, adamant about leaving.

Someone had tried to escape before, got shot in the head not far out, and a few days later, the body floated back.

So, the people on Veridian Isle believed Zachary was dead, but it wasn’t until today that Seraphina found out he was alive and encountered her here.

The reunion of old acquaintances should be a joyous occasion, but he was about to be executed.

"After this meal, we’ll truly say goodbye," Zachary spoke lightly, with no fear of death.

Seraphina was saddened by his words, took out paper and pen from her bag, pretending to jot down interview notes, asked, "How were you caught?"

"I was reported."

Saying this, Zachary’s expression surprisingly held a trace of pleasure.

"Hadn’t you ever seen me on TV before?"

If she had, why didn’t she come find him?

If they had met sooner, Zachary wouldn’t be in this situation now.

Upon hearing this, Zachary pushed away the bowl of cold noodles and started talking about other topics, "Seraphina, I really enjoyed the outside world, it’s much more interesting than you described. I didn’t even know there was a type of food called hotpot."

Seraphina looked at him, her heart filled with infinite sorrow.

Zachary’s eyes reddened at the corners, but he smiled brightly, touching the cuffs on his hands, "Luckily, after arriving here, I stole a wristband to cover the cuffs, and no one noticed, I survived successfully."

Seraphina’s nose tingled, listening silently.

"This past year, was more exciting than my entire past twenty-some years, this world is truly lovable. Oh, and I made some money, I know you like sweets, so I bought you lots of candy, you can have different ones each day."

Zachary leaned in close, whispering, "I’ll give you an address, note it down, remember to go get the candy, okay?"
