Mr. CEO's Ex-Wife: A Cunning Comeback-Chapter 254: Daniel, Step Back!
Chapter 254: Chapter 254: Daniel, Step Back!
The old man looked at the gear and then turned to the woman lying motionless on the ground. He gently moved her to sit against the wall and rested her head on his shoulder.
Then he shook his head and said softly, "Just leave us. I won’t go. I can’t walk anymore."
"Mister, go up to the 35th floor first. When the rescue team arrives, they’ll help your wife," Chantelle said. She didn’t want to see him die in the fire.
The old man suddenly got angry. He shoved the gear she offered.
It slipped from her hand and nearly dropped down to the 33rd floor.
"I said leave us alone! Stop bothering me! Go away!"
Chantelle couldn’t convince him. Then she noticed Kane hadn’t moved for over ten minutes.
Worried about Kane, Chantelle reached into her bag, took out a small bottle of medicine, and handed it to the old man.
"Mister, there are two life-saving pills in this bottle," Chantelle said. "If you trust me, take one when things get bad. I’ll come back for you after I find my son."
"I don’t know you. You don’t have to come back." The old man pulled his wife into his arms and closed his eyes, ready to face the end with her.
Chantelle’s chest tightened, but she knew there was nothing more she could do. She left the bottle beside him, put on her gear, and quickly climbed down to the 33rd floor.
At that moment, Daniel ran into Camille in the hallway. She looked lost with her messy hair and wrinkled clothes.
When she saw him, her eyes lit up. "Daniel!"
She rushed over to hug him, but he moved aside slightly and asked with a blank face, "Are you alone?"
"Daniel, it was that bitch Chantelle who hurt me! She drugged me and almost got me assaulted. You have to get back at her for me!" Camille shouted.
The memory of the homeless man Anthony brought in made her sick.
"Where is Chantelle?" Daniel asked coldly. He had no time for her drama. He just wanted to find Chantelle.
However, Camille thought Daniel was trying to take revenge for her, so she quickly added more to her story. "I just saw her hugging a handsome man and heading to the 34th floor. Daniel, that floor is on fire. You can’t go there."
When Daniel heard where Chantelle was, he gave orders right away. He told two bodyguards to take Camille away, then led the rest toward the 34th floor.
"Sir, we can’t go through the corridor," the bodyguard in front of him reported. "It’s full of smoke. We can’t pass through without gas masks."
"Go down from the window on the 35th floor and head straight to the 33rd," Daniel said. He knew that nothing mattered more to Chantelle than her child. If she got out, she would go to the 33rd floor without a doubt.
Daniel led the team through the window to the 33rd floor. But when they got there, he saw the glass had already been broken. The room was empty. Both Chantelle and Kane’s signals had disappeared from his phone.
"Keep looking for Chantelle," Daniel ordered and his eyes were slightly red.
The bodyguards hesitated for a moment, but no one dared to question him.
Then, Daniel suddenly stopped. He bent down and picked something up from the floor.
It was Chantelle’s necklace. He knew it well. He couldn’t be mistaken.
"Sir, there were fights and explosions here. We also found some torn pieces of clothing," one of the bodyguards reported after checking the area. He bent down, picked up the fabric, and handed it to Daniel.
Daniel took them with shaking hands. His heart sank. He recognized them right away. Some pieces were from Chantelle’s clothes. The others... belonged to Kane.
What exactly happened here before we arrived? Where did they go?
The fire kept growing. Explosions were still occurring, and the heat around them was getting worse.
"Sir, we can’t stay here much longer," the bodyguard said carefully.
Daniel put Chantelle and Kane’s belongings into his pockets and walked out with his team.
They headed toward the glass plank road on the 33rd floor. It connected to the building across. Once they crossed it, they’d be safe.
"Sir, look! Footprints!" one of the bodyguards suddenly shouted.
Daniel snapped out of his thoughts and looked down. He saw two sets of footprints—one clearly from an adult, the other from a child.
A smile broke across his face.
I knew it. They’re okay.
"Sir, it’s Mrs. Wilson and Kane!" the bodyguard shouted excitedly as he saw them standing on the glass plank road.
Daniel saw Chantelle and Kane ahead and quickly picked up his pace.
Just as he stepped onto the glass plank road, his phone rang. The cheerful ringtone felt strange. It was a call from Kane.
"Kane, don’t be scared. Daddy’s here," Daniel said as he answered.
"Daniel! Step back!" Chantelle screamed through the phone in a rough and panicked voice. Her back was still facing him.
Daniel’s heart sank. Something was off.
Chantelle and Kane stood completely still. Too still that it hinted at a huge danger ahead.
He realized right away that they weren’t alone. Someone was forcing them to stay there.
Daniel quickly raised his hand, signaling the bodyguards behind him to step back.
"Chantelle, what’s going on?" he asked.
"Joseph has Rai. He brought us here on purpose. He wants to kill us," Chantelle said in a shaking voice.
Daniel’s face darkened. A cold, murderous look took over his expression.
He looked across the glass plank road, but all he could see were two blurry figures in the distance.
"Chantelle, listen to me. No matter what Joseph said, don’t let it scare you. Take Kane and cross to the other side. Trust me. I won’t let anything happen to either of you." freewёbnoνel.com
Chantelle held Kane’s hand tightly and stared straight at Joseph. The bodyguard next to him pressed a dagger against Railer’s neck. The blade had already cut his skin, leaving fresh wounds.
"Daniel, take care of Rai and Steph," Chantelle said before ending the call.
"Chantelle! Don’t!" Daniel’s scream almost filled the entire building. He didn’t think twice and rushed onto the glass plank road.
But just as he stepped forward, someone grabbed him from behind.
"Daniel, you can’t go! You’ll die!" Camille had followed him without anyone noticing and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Let go of me!" Daniel’s face darkened. He tried to shake off her hands, but Camille desperately refused to let him go.
