Chapter 94: Chapter 92: For Some Reason, His Eyes Began to Rain (Part 1)

Nora Ainsworth’s fingertips were ice-cold. It was as if all her strength had been drained away, leaving her with no energy to say another word.

’The answer was so clear. There was no need to press for details.’

"Why have you gone silent?"

Nora replied, "There’s nothing to say."

——————

Outside the door, Catherine Callahan stomped her foot in frustration. Hearing no sounds from inside, she hesitated, unsure if she should knock and go in.

Time slowly ticked by. Catherine Callahan, still standing there, suddenly slumped to the floor.

’She knew exactly what was happening in there. She had seen Nora Ainsworth walk from the front gate to Quentin Grant’s bedroom with her own eyes. She’d assumed Quentin would yell at Nora and throw her out, but so much time had passed, and she still hadn’t come out.’

She was overcome with the urge to slice Nora Ainsworth to death, one cut at a time.

’It would have been one thing if she’d never come back. But now she’s here, and she dares to be so brazen in my presence. Nora Ainsworth, I won’t be satisfied until I tear you limb from limb!’

「The next morning.」

The window was bright, and sunlight streamed into the room.

It cast a warm glow across the floor.

Nora Ainsworth rubbed her lower back and tried to slowly slip out of his embrace, but he wouldn’t let go.

’He must be awake,’ she thought.

But when she looked, his eyes were still closed in sleep.

She had no choice but to keep lying there.

Just then, Catherine Callahan’s voice came from the doorway. "Quentin? Time to get up for breakfast. I cooked it myself."

Her voice betrayed no hint of anything unusual.

Quentin didn’t respond, so she called out again. Only then did he let out a soft "mmph," turning to pull Nora closer. He pressed his face against the side of hers in an exceptionally intimate gesture.

He slowly opened his eyes. His pupils, with their glassy sheen, looked like something out of a painting, still hazy with sleep.

"Nora, I have to say, it feels really good sleeping while holding you."

Nora Ainsworth offered a seamless smile. "I think so, too."

She sat up, grabbed his blue shirt, and slipped it over her small frame before heading to the bathroom.

An ambiguous smile played on her lips.

When she came out, he still hadn’t moved.

Nora Ainsworth tied her long hair back and padded barefoot toward him, one step at a time.

She put on her own clothes and handed the shirt back to him. "Get up."

With a stretch of his long arm, he instantly pulled her down underneath him.

Nora’s eyes remained clear. "Miss Callahan is waiting at the door."

He released her. "Let’s go downstairs and eat together."

Nora didn’t object. But when they opened the door...

Catherine Callahan wasn’t standing at the door. When the two went downstairs, they didn’t see her either.

She only appeared after Nora Ainsworth had returned to her own bedroom.

She sat down opposite Quentin Grant and arranged his breakfast for him.

They exchanged very few words.

After finishing breakfast, Quentin Grant left for the office. Catherine Callahan cleared the dishes and then went out.

She walked to the door of Nora Ainsworth’s room and shut it behind her.

"Nora Ainsworth, how could you be so shameless!" Her face couldn’t hide her fury.

Nora, eating the staff breakfast, feigned ignorance. "Shameless? How so? Did I steal your husband or beat your son?"

"You—" Although Catherine Callahan was seething with hatred, there was nothing she could do at that moment.

"Miss Callahan, if there’s nothing else, you should leave. We wouldn’t want you to have another heart attack and blame it on me again."

Catherine Callahan’s face was cold as she glared at her. "Nora Ainsworth, don’t get cocky. I’ll make sure you die without a place to be buried!"

Nora Ainsworth’s heart skipped a beat, but she said, "Fine. I’ll be waiting."

Catherine Callahan said no more, turning on her heel and leaving.

Nora Ainsworth wouldn’t officially start work until tomorrow. Her heart was filled with a nagging unease, leaving her restless and on edge all day.

In the evening, Chloe Marshall gave her a call.

The call nearly made Nora’s legs give out from under her.

"Nora, I just heard from Boss Ellsworth that Mrs. Grant personally called Young Master Hawthorne and told him to pick you up from the Grant Residence. She won’t allow you to appear in Young Master Grant’s sight again. She also called Young Master Grant home. Boss Ellsworth said she’s probably planning to kick you out."

Nora knew what this meant. ’Mrs. Grant must have promised Catherine Callahan something.’

She said, "Chloe, do you have a place to stay? If I get kicked out tonight, I was hoping I could crash at your place for a night."

Chloe Marshall immediately replied, "Nora, what are you talking about? If you don’t mind, you can stay at my place with me for as long as you want."

"I just want to be prepared. For some things, you really have to get ready in advance."

After hanging up, she lay on her bed and waited quietly.

’It seems my premonition was accurate. Maybe when he comes back, he won’t see me again.’

Just as she was thinking this, a text from Quentin Grant came through.

It contained only three short words: "Come to Temptation."

Nora Ainsworth retrieved the Jade Pendant from under her bed, strung Leon Lynch’s diamond ring onto it, and hung it around her neck. Then, she walked out.

At the doorway, she looked back at the room, an overwhelming sadness in her heart.

’But what’s meant to happen will happen. This is the result I’ve been hoping for all along. How wonderful.’

She walked out of the residential complex, planning to catch a taxi. Unexpectedly, while standing a short distance away, she felt a sharp pain in the back of her head, and then everything went black as she passed out.

Two masked men quickly dragged her into a car, which sped away from the scene as if nothing had ever happened.

All that remained was a lone hairpin, lying forlornly on the ground as if calling out for its owner. But alas, a gust of wind blew past, and it didn’t move. Countless people and cars passed by, yet no one noticed its tiny existence.

***

When Nora Ainsworth woke up, she found herself sitting in a car.

She quickly looked around and saw that she was in the middle of nowhere, with no idea how she had gotten there.

Not daring to delay, she started the car, wanting to leave this sinister and bizarre place as quickly as possible.

When the car reached the East Gate intersection on the main street, Nora Ainsworth tried to make a U-turn. But to her dismay, the car was like a remote-controlled vehicle, completely unresponsive to her commands.

Moreover, it drove forward in a very orderly manner, as if she could have fallen asleep and still been perfectly safe.

She stomped on the brake, but it had no effect.

Nora Ainsworth instantly broke out in a cold sweat.

Panicked, she stomped hard on the brake again. It was still useless.

She carefully inspected the car. She didn’t recognize it. She vaguely remembered a sharp pain striking her head, and then nothing.

When she thought about who would want to harm her, Catherine Callahan was the first person who came to mind.

’But now is clearly not the time to be thinking about that.’

’Right now, the only way out is to jump from the car.’

But she had forgotten.

If someone wanted to harm her, how could they possibly leave her any chance of survival?

The doors and windows were locked tight. There was no escape.

Flustered and helpless, she searched for any communication device in the car.

When she left, she had been wearing clothes without pockets, so she had hung her phone around her neck, underneath her shirt.

She reached for it. It was still there.
