Chapter 244: Chapter 244: Their Past

"I thought... I thought you’d never come back, Sisi..." Kael muttered. "I really thought that I had lost you."

"Why would you say that? Didn’t I promise to return so I can cure Jojo of his blindness?" Sisi chuckled. "You can always trust me, Kael. I am not lying when I say that I’ll return, nor do I lie when I say that I’ll have to leave..."

Yes, Sisi had to make sure that Kael understood her current situation and that she had to leave eventually. They weren’t meant to be together even if they fell in love with each other.

Kael went quiet after that, and then tried to shift the conversation. "How was it in faerie land? Is it to your liking?"

"Of course, it is my birthplace after all, and everyone’s so nice to me," Sisi replied. "I also met my grandmother, and she finally gave me water from the Origin Spring, which will cure any kind of illness."

"Sisi, Jojo’s illness is—"

"—I know," Sisi cut him short. "It’s because of his curse, right?"

Kael nodded reluctantly to confirm it.

"This spring water is a gift from the goddesses themselves to the faeries. Not only does it cure illness and near-death injuries, my grandmother also said that it would cure any side effect of the Dawn Star, including his blindness and other illnesses in the future as well," Sisi said. "Though, that also requires me to chant a miracle."

"To cure the Dawn Star’s side effects... that’s indeed a miracle," Kael nodded. He peered at his beloved suspiciously. "But at what cost? Surely performing such a miracle will have its drawback or a hefty cost, right?"

Sisi paused for a moment. Of course, she didn’t want to worry Kael to no end. She didn’t want him to know that it would cause her to lose access to the Origin Spring itself.

Not that it was important to begin with. Sisi managed to survive for eighteen years without having to drink from Origin Spring. She was sure that she could survive a few decades more.

"It’ll tire me out," Sisi replied, half-lying. Of course, it would tire her out. Every time she used her power, she felt dizzy, like the world was spinning each time she forced herself to summon more vines.

Kael still had suspicion in his mind. But then he recalled that time Sisi revived a faerie that he accidentally swatted and killed, and then realized that she truly had miracles.

"But before I perform the miracle, Grandma told me to find out the Dawn Star’s real name," Sisi peered back at Kael. "Jojo is not his real name, is it? Tell me the truth, Kael, or else it’d be impossible for me to heal him."

Kael took a deep breath. He knew that he had to eventually tell Sisi everything about his past and Jojo’s, and how they ended up as father and son even though they weren’t blood-related.

Thus, he took another deep breath before he opened his lips.

"You should know by now that I am not liked by everyone, even in my original pack where I was born. I’ve always been feared since they saw me as a cursed being.

My mother got shunned because she didn’t kill me, and instead took care of me until she died of starvation. I was kicked out of my original pack when I was very young, and I managed to survive in the Roc Forest just fine.

Then, I met Alpha Ib from the Stormsurge Pack.

He took me under his wing, accepting me into his pack, and I saw him as a father figure.

I grew up to be a teenager and a young man who craved his approval, just like how a son wants his father’s approval. He knew that I am a cursed being and used me as a cold-blooded killer.

He dispatched me to massacre enemy packs alone, and also kill other beastmen who dared to cross into his territory.

He was a tyrant, and I was his most devoted lackey.

He also had a wife whom I saw as my own mother, though we weren’t close because even she was scared of the bloodlust in me."

Kael lowered his head guiltily. He didn’t want to confess too much about his past, since Sisi was a kind woman. He was scared that Sisi would find him and his sins repulsive.

But he also couldn’t hide that fact, because he loved her and wished to tell her everything about him and Jojo.

Sisi nodded heavily. The topic was difficult to swallow, and the fact that Kael was basically a merciless killer made it even more unsettling.

But in the end, the law in the beastmen world was either kill or be killed, and Kael chose to kill.

Seeing that Sisi didn’t say much, but also didn’t look repulsed, Kael finally continued his story.

"Everything was perfect until it all came crashing down on one fateful night. I was dispatched to attack a wolf pack far from Stormsurge Pack territory, and while I was gone, every beastman tribe around the area banded together to attack the pack.

They were all surrounded, and Alpha Ib was killed during the attack, as well as almost everyone inside Stormsurge, until the entire pack just... disappeared.

When I returned, I thought nobody survived. But Alpha Ib’s mate, Luna Erika, called my name.

She was the only survivor from the Stormsurge pack, but in the end, she too died—not from injury, but due to difficult labor.

That night, she was giving birth to Jojo.

She told me to take care of Jojo before passing away. But even if she didn’t say so, I still would’ve taken care of him, because the moment I saw the newborn pup, I knew that he is my other half, my son from the previous incarnation, the Dawn Star of this era. Because we can recognize each other in every era even if we’re not technically blood-related."
