Modern World Warlock-Chapter 244: Death Knight
While Zac and Alice escorted the people to the entrance of the cave, the woman explained that the hundred-meter tunnel to the exit was fully submerged.
"How long can you stay without breathing?" Alice asked the redhead, but he wasn’t sure as he had never tried to break his record since he was a child.
In the other room, Dante and Laurent were done breaking the chains binding the people, and just as the men told them to evacuate through the tunnel, the vampire and the warlock sensed an eerie presence.
"What was that?" Laurent asked, his gaze sharp and his tone serious.
"Let’s get out of here…" Dante replied.
When the last group of people slowly walked through the tunnel to the entrance, the young couple who mustered the courage to speak to Dante stayed behind with the warlock, believing they would be the safest next to him.
Still, seeing that the warlock and the vampire weren’t going back with them, the young couple stopped in their tracks.
"Wh-what are they doing…?" the girl muttered to her partner as Dante and Laurent were standing in the room, looking around as if they were searching for something.
"You guys should go back… now," Dante said to the couple, his tone sounding more like a command than a request.
Right as the teenagers decided to keep moving, they felt a sudden chill as the temperature inside the cave drastically dropped, making their eyes widen in fear.
"He is coming!" the boy shouted, warning Dante and Laurent.
Nevertheless, Dante simply gazed back at the boy, giving him a serious and confident nod, prompting the couple to run to the exit.
"Hey, Number 2… You might want to play it safe here," Dante said to his vampire companion.
Before Laurent could respond, an icy wind began to swirl in the center of the room, right above the water puddle, releasing freezing gusts of wind that were cold enough to freeze the stalactites in the cave.
Dante and Laurent discerned the figure of a humanoid being from the mist, with a height of at least 2.5 meters and a frame wider than a fridge.
There was clear necrotic energy flowing from the enemy, but Dante could also see a vast amount of mana and umbra.
When the mist began to slowly dissipate, the pair could see the man’s mighty-looking black armor adorning his body.
Its shoulders had large skulls carved on them, with their eye sockets producing a faint, blue light that constantly released an icy breath.
The horned helm covered his face entirely, with the same cold energy flowing from within, and the long, double-edged sword in his hand was shrouded in blue flames.
*Sigh* "I knew it… It’s a Dead Knight," Dante commented, his tone making it sound like an inconvenience more than a real problem.
"I’ve heard about them from Mother… A few of those things could take on entire armies back in your world, right?" Laurent said as a small drop of sweat trailed down his temple.
"Heh… That bastard sent a pretty strong one, too," Dante continued, grinning and taking a firmer stance.
The warlock knew that fighting a Death Knight in such an enclosed space was a bad idea, as he could freeze the entire cave in a few seconds. While Dante would be able to endure it, he wasn’t sure that Laurent could.
"Get the people out of here…" Dante muttered to the vampire.
Laurent gritted his teeth with a bit of frustration, understanding the danger in front of them, and listened to the warlock’s command, bolting through the tunnel towards the exit.
After the vampire left the cold room, Dante turned with a sharp gaze and glared at his opponent.
"Do you speak?" Dante asked the Death Knight, receiving silence in return.
"I see… Too bad," he continued, opening his palm and gathering umbra around it, preparing himself for the assault.
The moment the Death Knight grasped his greatsword with both hands, he appeared in front of Dante in the blink of an eye, slashing down and hitting the ground, raising a cloud of dust and water.
Noticing the warlock had avoided his attack, the knight sliced to the side in an attempt to strike him. Still, Dante had already gotten distance away from him.
When he stepped on the other side of the cave, the warlock released a barrage of "Rapture" spells, cutting the stalactites on the ceiling as if they were made of butter.
The Death Knight deflected a couple of the invisible slashes that traveled toward him, and as the spiky stalactites dropped on his frame, Dante cast his "Abyssal Chains" spell, binding his opponent’s extremities.
Nevertheless, the chains could only hold the knight down for a second, as he quickly snapped the chains and waved his sword forward, producing a wave of ice magic directed at Dante.
As Dante slid across the ground and avoided the ice slash that traveled a few centimeters above his head, he pointed at the Death Knight with a finger-gun gesture.
"Obliterate," Dante muttered, releasing an invisible wave that caught his opponent’s left shoulder, making it implode and completely severing it.
The spell was a variation of "Destro." However, it had a much smaller range and area of effect. In exchange, it was ten times more powerful than an ordinary "Destro" spell, so a thin layer of magic wouldn’t be enough to protect from it.
*Tch* ’I was aiming for the head…’ Dante thought, realizing he was now less than two meters away from the Death Knight.
Impervious to the pain of losing his arm, the knight grabbed his greatsword with his right hand and stabbed the ground with force, making the cave rumble and releasing a frost nova from his blade.
In an instant, the warlock clapped his hands and appeared right in front of the entrance to the tunnel leading to the exit, casting "Shadow Wall" to prevent the freezing magic wave from traveling further down.
’Just a bit more time for everyone to evacuate…’ Dante thought, gritting his teeth and transferring more umbra to his shield to make sure it endured.
