Modern Weapons Cheat in Fantasy World-Chapter 6: City of Berm
Inside the city of Berm. Marcus looked around with an awed expression. It was really a medieval city with cobblestone-paved roads, house design akin to Germany.
And it was surprisingly clean for a medieval town. Perhaps magic had done something for the sanitation of the city.
As they went deeper, Marcus saw a fountain dominating the center.
"It’s the city’s square," Ivan said as he guided the carriage past the outer ring of stalls. "Most announcements are made here. Taxes, guild notices, executions."
Marcus slowed his pace and looked at the fountain.
It stood in the middle of a wide stone plaza. A carved statue of a knight held a sword downward, its tip touching the water. Clear streams poured from four spouts shaped like lion heads. People gathered around it, mingling and talking.
And not only that, he noticed another species. It has a long-ear, a slender figure, and a charming face.
"Woah..."
Ivan noticed him looking at one of the ladies and cleared his throat. "That’s an elf, Sir Marcus. As we have told you, different races co-exist within the kingdom."
Marcus kept his eyes on the elf for another second before shifting them away.
"I know, it’s my first time. You see, from where I am from and remembered, there’s only humans there. The only difference in terms of race is the color of the skin."
"I see...well in here, everyone can live no matter what species you are. Just behave well. Now, I’ll have Vance escort you to the inn nearby so you can rest. Don’t mind the payment, I’ll take care of it. As for the payment for the ogres and reward for saving us, it’ll be conducted later in my estate. Leila will personally pick you up at three o’clock in the afternoon."
"I understand, you have business to settle."
Ivan gave him a short nod.
"Escort him to the Silver Stag. Use my name if needed."
Vance adjusted the strap of his sword and gestured with his head.
"Let’s move."
Marcus stepped away from the carriage. The square was still busy. Vendors shouted prices. A man dragged a crate across the stone, the wood scraping loudly.
As they walked, Marcus noticed how people looked at him inquisitively. Well, he was wearing a modern combat uniform from Earth, so that would naturally attract attention. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Though he considered blending in with the locals in the future as he doesn’t want unwanted attraction as well.
They turned down a side street. The buildings were closer here. Laundry hung between windows above. A baker pushed open his door, carrying trays of fresh bread. The smell drifted into the street.
They stopped in front of a wooden building with a painted sign of a stag with wide antlers.
"Silver Stag," Vance said.
He pushed the door open.
Inside, the air was warmer. A few early customers sat at tables eating stew. The innkeeper, a broad-shouldered woman with tied-back hair, looked up.
"One room," Vance said. "Under Merchant Ivan."
She nodded once and reached beneath the counter. She handed over a metal key with a small wooden tag attached.
"Second floor. Last door."
Vance passed the key to Marcus.
"You can do whatever you like from here on out but you must return here by three o’clock in the afternoon as Leila will be picking you up."
"No problem, three o’clock, I will be here," Marcus said, taking the key from Vance.
Vance gave him a short nod and handed him a pouch full of coins.
"There’s 100 kinah there, 5 silver coins and 50 copper coins. You can spend it however you like while you are exploring the city."
"Did Mr. Ivan gave this to me?"
"No, that one is out of my pocket," Vance said.
"So this is your money? I don’t think I should take this from a soldier..."
"No you keep it, you saved my life out there. It’s enough to last you for a day. It should have been bigger but I don’t have my salary yet..."
Marcus chuckled. "Well, I’ll accept it then. Thank you."
"No problem. I’ll leave you now," Vance said.
He turned and walked out of the inn without looking back.
Marcus stood there for a second, the pouch resting in his palm.
He tightened the cord and slipped it into one of his vest pockets. He went upstairs and unlocked the room. He stepped inside and closed the room behind him.
He removed his vest and rifle and laid them on the bed. Then he stripped down to his undershirt and trousers and poured water into the basin.
He washed his face and neck, scrubbing off dried sweat and road dust. The water turned slightly gray.
After drying off with the rough towel provided, he laid on the bed and rested there for a while. The four-hour journey was rough due to the stiffness of the carriage. He wasn’t used to such a long trip in such a short distance. If he had a vehicle back there he would reach the city in just an hour.
Well for now, he’ll take a break, and do a power nap. Because later, he’ll explore this city.
