Mercenary God: Reborn with a talent for fighting.-Chapter 35: Ch The knights
I couldn’t find Umbra, no matter how much I tried searching, not once did I find him.
For a moment, I even thought his existence had been a false entity I had created, that was until I came across Sir Felix.
The Knight of Ideal — his imposing height leading him to tower over me — left me to waver, somewhat frightened by his presence.
"Boi, what are you doing around these parts?" He sounded perplexed, as if he had seen something he shouldn’t be seeing now.
Right, his confusion was warranted. After all, I had joined the crowd either of practicing for my match.
If it was up to me, I would be doing just that, but my brother... he believed I had enough of that.
"Actually, I was looking for Umbra. Mr. Knight, have you seen him?"
"Oh!"
Nodding in understanding, he sighed.
"You just missed him. I sent him on a little bit of an errand. He’ll be back by the time you’re done with your match."
"Oh!" I exclaimed in disappointment. But for Sir Felix to send Umbra on an errand, it must have been rather urgent.
"I guess I’ll take my leave then."
I no longer had any more reason to continue the conversation, hence I turned to leave, but...
"Boi, why don’t you chat with me for a bit?"
Patting the seat beside him, he suggested.
Ordinarily, I would have passed since I was scared of him... well, I was scared of most SS ranks, since most of them could see through me.
Anyway, as I said, ordinarily — but I didn’t.
He and Abel had been acting weird this whole time, so I decided to use the conversation to at least try and decipher whatever secret plan they were up to.
"Sure."
Hence, I agreed and took his offer.
Taking the seat, I oversaw my soon-to-be battlefield being mended together via magic after the abuse Abel and Gilhunt had left on it.
"Boi, do you think your brother was going all out?"
At his question, I sighed, my body slouching in the chair.
"I didn’t actually watch the match," I said truthfully.
I had been so engrossed in practicing with my weapon of choice that before I knew it, time had flashed by. By the time I even came to be, it was already over.
"Then let’s chat about something else."
He seemed disappointed. He probably wanted to go on an hour-long lecture about how strong and cool Abel was, and also proclaim how he had been the one to impart most of his teachings to him.
"Let’s talk about demons then. What do you think of them?"
This question was rather complicated.
Demons... good old demons.
If I’m being honest, I’ve never seen one with my own eyes before. From rumor and even the books I read about them, most of them seemed to resemble humans — especially the ancient ones, like the nobles and the generals.
"I guess I’ve be told they’re the bad guys, but I’ve never interacted with one, so I can’t judge by mere rumors."
Was it because I originally didn’t come from this world? Honestly, I can’t tell.
I do know that I hated Baal — the demon who killed my father — with all my might, but to say I hated demons would be a lie.
I just couldn’t form an opinion on them because they weren’t the only terror this world faced.
There were the Demonic Sect — a bunch of lunatics and terrorists that sought to preach and spread the so-called gospel of their Demonic god.
Then the Demonic Cultivators of the East, who committed genocide and mass slaughter just to advance in rank.
The Nightmares at the ends of the world were no exception either. As their name suggested, they populated the ends of the world, that being the northern continent which they inhabited alongside the demons.
They were mostly inactive and didn’t attack the world like demons, but the poor souls that ended up in their territory were never seen or heard of again.
"Boi, your response is rather unoriginal. Can’t say I haven’t heard the same words from other candidates I took in, but I understand."
"...I see." I nodded.
"In my own opinion, I’m terrified of demons."
I blinked, astonished by what Sir Felix said to me.
For an SS rank — and not just an ordinary one, but one specifically trained to kill demons — to say he was scared of them... how was I supposed to face them in the future?
"Hey, don’t panic." He patted my shoulder before explaining why. "My opinion was formed due to my experience during my early days as an untitled knight.Back then, I was too naïve to comprehend what those creatures were — that was until my first encounter with one."
"Were they strong?" I couldn’t help but ask.
"Well, if you consider a noble demon to be strong, then I guess."
"So what happened?" Curious about the Knight of Ideal’s origin, I engaged him to continue.
"Haha, children these days — so eager to know the traumatic experiences of others."
"Oh... sorry." I ended up apologizing.
To me, it might be a story, but to him, it had been reality... I’ll even go a step further and say, a nightmare made reality, since the happenings of that day ended up shaping his opinion on demons.
"Don’t worry about it, I’m not offended."
With clenched fists, he patted his heart and smiled diligently.
He then followed by leaning back into his chair and letting out a long sigh.
"...I was a soft fellow back then, who had heard and seen the miracles of the Klaus Bladeheart and the Ravengers..."
"Dad," I interrupted at the sudden mention of my father’s name.
"Yeah. He, Kain, your mother, and Camilla — they called themselves Ravagers back then and went from town to town, city to city, and even outside the borders of our empire, all so they could liberate them from demon attacks."
"It sounds rather exciting."
"Haha, yeah. I might not have been with them, but their tales after each return were the delight of the knight Order back then."
"So what happened next?"
"Well, one day a bunch of us, eager to live the life they did, joined them and together we went on a mission one that served as a reminder of our grim times." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
His expression immediately turned sour, and he began to recount.
