Mated To My Boyfriend's Dad-Chapter 49: _ Rhett Will Win
Chapter 49: _ Rhett Will Win
"His clothes were covered in blood and he was holding that little boy. But I spoke to him..."
Rhett’s brows furrowed. "About?"
"I asked him where he found those clothes and the boy. He told me — that he found the boy’s brother wounded from the attack and he has been requested to go bring the little one. I personally tendered my condolences to the little boy who appeared to be visibly grieving." Explained, Cora.
Now – this had yet disrupted the guesses he had in his mind. If Liam was with Reed because he was taking him to his brother, it meant the little boy was innocent.
Farkas’s interjection cut the chase of his thoughts. "That’s a lie."
Simultaneously, Rhett and Cora’s gazes turned to him.
"Reed was not taking the boy to his big brother. When I checked the information of the boy, his brother died in the attack. We took everyone who died and those who were injured ourselves. Nobody was allowed in the crime scene and I sure as hell didn’t see any civilians around."
That was indeed true. Rhett did remember Isleen telling him about Liam losing his elder brother. "Are you lying to us again, Cora?"
"No. No. No." Cora jerked up. By the gods, I’m not. I really am speaking the truth this time. I did Reed that night and he told me that. He told me to go wait for him and he never returned after that." She swore.
Rhett and Farkas exchanged glances. It was now clear that the more they knew, the less they realized they knew. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Farkas sighed. "Apart from his bloody clothes and strange outfit, did you notice anything strange with Reed that night?"
Cora didn’t take a second to speak. "Yes, yes. Indeed! The way he acted. The way he spoke –it almost seemed... different. I was very confused at first, but then, it was Reed. Just the look in his eyes. I thought of it as him being traumatized by everything that was happening and having to see the injured wolf too."
A pin-drop silence descended upon for a while.
The only noise that echoed was that of the activities bustling outside. Rhett knew it was late and Cora needed to get going soon. It was obvious that the pack wasn’t a safe zone for now.
"I think we just have to wait for the autopsy to confirm the identities of the victims. And then, we’d know how to link them to this occurrence." Rhett intentionally wanted to dismiss the interrogation now.
Cora, however, inclined her head. "The boy. I think he must be the recent young wolf remains found recently in the woods. Ever since I heard it, I’ve been restless. I fear Reed took him to the vampires. But – Reed would never do that. Aella and her family are good people, the stars be my witness!"
"The boy is alive, Cora." Rhett grimly said. "We will interrogate him tomorrow. But for now, you need to leave as it is already getting dark."
Farkas opened the door with a creak. "The others seemed to have left." He surveyed.
Oh. Rhett would never forgive himself if anything happened to Cora because of this interrogation. As a matter of fact, he thought she might be in danger for being the only witness to the missing family’s tragedy.
"I’ll drive you home." He stood up.
Cora gasped, waving her hands disapprovingly. "No, Gamma, I’ve caused enough trouble. I’ll just go on my own."
"Yes, and you will be punished for the troubles you’ve caused, but until then, I’ll drive you home to ensure your safety." Rhett rebuffed.
That visibly shook Cora as her face fell. "Thank you, Gamma Rhett." She mumbled.
Rhett and Farkas exchanged a knowing glance. Farkas nodded to ensure Rhett that he’d have everything under control.
Rhett on the other hand, had a different mission in mind. His mate, he’d like to go bask in the serenity of her scent even if it was from afar.
He knew it was inappropriate and he shouldn’t make it a habit, otherwise, he’d get caught but his reason (excuse) was that he would use that as an avenue to study Liam even more.
.
He left with Cora sitting silently beside him in the car. Cora fidgeted with her hands, nervously glancing out the window, while Rhett’s mind wrestled with the new information Cora had provided.
He couldn’t help but ponder the inconsistencies in the information. If Liam’s brother was truly dead, why would Reed lie about taking him there? And what did Cora mean by Reed acting "different"?
His thoughts drifted to Isleen. He longed to hold her close, to share the burden of these unsettling developments, but he knew such thoughts were unwise.
However, ever since the holy one had given him a ’go ahead’, concerning the mate bond, he found that the longing he had for Isleen was growing bigger and bigger.
Suddenly, Cora spoke. "Gamma Rhett, do you think they will suspect me? About Reed and... the little boy?"
Suspect her? Who and why?
Rhett hesitated. He decided to act the fool. "It’s possible, Cora. But remember, you came forward with what you knew. That is what matters." He paused, then added, "However, it’s crucial you remain truthful and cooperative with the investigation."
Cora nodded solemnly. "I understand. I just – I never thought things would turn out like this. Reed was always so kind, so gentle."
Rhett tried to offer a reassuring smile but he failed at it. "We will get to the bottom of this, Cora. Justice will be served."
His words, even he didn’t fully believe. Justice seemed elusive in the face of these mysterious killings and the growing darkness threatening the pack.
Reaching Cora’s doorstep, Rhett stopped the car. "Stay safe, Cora," he said, his voice low.
Cora nodded gratefully, stepped out, and disappeared into the shadows.
Alone in the car, Rhett sighed and relaxed into his seat. "No matter what, war or no war, you will win, Rhett."
After the affirmation, he swerved the car in the direction of Isleen’s house. Time to see her and get even harder until his prick threatened to burst.
