“I’m telling you for the last time, let go.” Mu Lin’s voice had now lost all its warmth, her expression increasingly frigid and penetrating.

Since he was willing to throw away his own life, she didn’t mind… reclaiming it.

Luckily, Jing Chen knew when to back off.

Though unsure about Mu Lin’s skills, he was quite well aware of her reputation as the Poison Doctor.

For the sake of his own life, he figured it’d be best not to provoke her too much.

Without uttering a word, he gradually released his grip around Mu Lin’s waist. Mu Lin immediately freed herself from his arms, distancing herself from him. Despite the distance, her eyes were still cold.

If looks could kill, Jing Chen would’ve died multiple times over by now.

Before he could speak…

“Miss Mu! I heard that you haven’t…” finished work.

His voice arrived before the person did. When he reached the door but didn’t enter, he noticed someone else was in the room. “Huh, you still have a patient?” he asked, his voice indicating a hint of curiosity, as if finding that Mu Lin still had a patient was an unusually strange event.

After all, he’d just seen the little nurse who usually assisted Mu Lin leave work. Could he possibly have had seen wrong?

“Yes, a patient who’s severely mentally ill.” Her voice exuded a faint grinding resentment.

“So, is he alright now?” The newcomer seemed blissfully oblivious to the tense atmosphere in the room, paying attention only to Mu Lin and ignoring the three men around her entirely.

“Mr. Mei.” Jing Chen had never seen Mei Qingyuan so… elated.

Is elated the right word? It didn’t seem to match the Mei Qingyuan he knew from home.

Jing Chen had a vague idea why Mei Qingyuan was treating Mu Lin so specially.

One thing was certain, though. Mei Qingyuan probably didn’t know Mu Lin’s true identity yet; if he did, the joy in his eyes would be even greater.

“Huh… Jing Chen, why are you here?” Hearing the familiar moniker, Mei Qingyuan finally somewhat acknowledged the others in the room. Upon catching sight of Jing Chen, his puzzled gaze fell upon him.

“I’m here for a follow-up appointment.” He really just noticed him, huh?

“Follow-up?” Mei Qingyuan repeated, before finally seeming to understand. “So the patient Miss Mu mentioned is you! Did you get injured somewhere?” His eyes roved up and down Jing Chen’s form. “I never thought you would actually get injured.”

“I’m fine now.” Jing Chen replied, “With Doctor Mu here, it was just a minor injury.” So her surname is Mu? He just didn’t know her first name.

“Well, that’s good.” Mei Qingyuan nodded, “Hang on, a follow-up appointment? Did you and Miss Mu know each other before?” Mu Lin had only been here a few days, and he had been around most of these few days. He hadn’t heard of this guy coming here before.

“We met once. Doctor Mu saved my life.” The fact that he had been injured and saved by the Poison Doctor was known to almost no one outside the Ying Sun group.

“That’s a real coincidence then.” Mei Qingyuan chuckled, watching Jing Chen and Mu Lin with increasing amusement in his eyes.

Clicking his tongue, he thought to himself that his sons weren’t a match for this Miss Mu. But Jing Chen, it seemed, might be a good fit.

Though a bit cold, Jing Chen’s character and accomplishments made him a leader amongst leaders. With Mu Lin there, perhaps Jing Chen’s old father would feel better?

Mei Qingyuan had originally intended to invite Mu Lin to the Jing Family, but he didn’t anticipate they already knew each other. That made things easier.

“Yes, quite the coincidence.” Mu Lin retorted with a cold huff. She shot a glance at the still smiling Jing Chen, then turned to Mei Qingyuan, “Mr. Mei, did you need something?”

“Oh, well, nothing really.” Mei Qingyuan then remembered, “It’s my wife’s birthday tonight, so I wanted to invite you to join us for dinner.”

His wife constantly nagged him about inviting Mu Lin over, so he needed to send the invite today, no matter what.

Did this fall under the category of being one’s own worst enemy? Regardless, he did hope that Mu Lin would come. The only issue was whether she was willing or not.

“Would that be inconvenient?” Mu Lin asked.

“Not at all. My wife is quite insistent on meeting you, she’s even given me an ultimatum.” Mei Qingyuan put on a show of distress. It seemed that if Mu Lin didn’t agree to go with him, he’d refuse to leave.

People say that as you get older, you become childlike. Looking at the elderly man in front of her, Mu Lin was at a loss. In the end, she agreed.

As for this caring elderly man, Mu Lin felt a little unsure about how to refuse. Although, it seemed he hadn’t given her a chance to refuse.

Seeing Mu Lin agree, the wrinkles at the corners of Mei Qingyuan’s eyes deepened as he smiled. He then turned to Jing Chen, “How about you join us, Jing Chen? My wife will be thrilled to see you.”

Their two families had known each other for several decades, and Madame Mei had watched Jing Chen grow up. She adored and was quite envious of this exceptional young man.

Envious because all the young men from the Jing family were so accomplished, especially Jing Chen.

“Alright.”

Just as Mei Qingyuan thought Jing Chen would decline, he agreed… without a moment’s hesitation.
