Marrying My Bestie's Ferocious Brother - He Calls Me His Baby!-Chapter 28: The Whole Compound Is Stunned! The Cold Commander Pulls a Cart for Love!
Headquarters, Logistics Division.
When Gu Yanshen stepped in, a few officers inside were arguing fiercely over a bit of oil and salt, but their voices halted abruptly, like a chicken’s neck being abruptly cut off.
The new Chief Zhou, with sharp eyes, immediately put down the abacus in his hand as soon as he saw him, and hurriedly walked up with a smile so broad it could almost squeeze out oil.
"Oh my! Mr. Gu! What brings you here personally? You could have just sent a message through a courier if you needed anything! Look at you..."
Gu Yanshen ignored his pleasantries, pulled out a piece of paper warmed by his body heat from his pocket, and handed it over. The creases in the paper silently spoke of its owner’s turmoil from the previous night.
Chief Zhou accepted it with both hands, as if it were the highest directive from the military district. He unfolded the list and carefully read through it. When he saw the crookedly drawn sun and heart at the bottom, his hand involuntarily trembled, and he looked at Gu Yanshen with a mixed expression of reverence and understanding.
"Understood! Understood!" He clutched the list to his chest like a treasure, turned around and shouted at his subordinates, "What are you all standing around for? Stop what you’re doing! Hurry up! Prepare everything according to our Teacher Lin’s family request list! Rice, go to Warehouse No. 1, and get the new rice specially supplied for the commanders! Pork, get the best pork belly from the meat processing plant, make sure it’s balanced with fat and lean, and tell Master Liu it’s for our compound hero, Teacher Lin, to nourish her body!"
Just then, Camp Commander Zhang from the neighboring second battalion came in with a loud voice: "Old Zhou, haven’t we received the buttons for our batch of training uniforms yet? The soldiers’ clothes are about to fall apart."
The smile on Chief Zhou’s face vanished instantly, replaced by a businesslike expression: "Old Zhang, I remember that, but supplies are tight right now, and the buttons haven’t arrived yet. You’ll have to wait a while longer."
After dealing with Camp Commander Zhang, he immediately reverted to his sycophantic demeanor, pointing to a shabby person cleaning in the corner: "Li Jianjun! What are you doing there? Come over here!"
Li Jianjun, the one called out, trembled. It was the same Li Jianjun who had been suspended a few days ago. He lifted his head and reluctantly moved over, his face full of humiliation.
"Mr. Gu needs some timber to repair his house," Chief Zhou ordered condescendingly, "You, go to Warehouse No. 2 and bring out that batch of the best pine boards shipped from the northeast for Mr. Gu! And bring a large bag of three-inch nails, plus that German-imported hammer and the new saw!"
Li Jianjun’s face turned as red as pig liver. He used to be in charge of things; when had he ever done such laborious work? But he didn’t dare to retort a single word, only able to under the chastisements of Chief Zhou and the schadenfreude of his colleagues, shoulder the tools and resign himself to heading to the warehouse. While moving the timber, he slipped, and the heavy board fell to the ground with a loud crash.
"Useless!" Chief Zhou rushed over and kicked him on the rear end, "Can you afford it if the timber gets damaged? This is for making furniture for Teacher Lin’s family! Hurry up and load it for Mr. Gu!"
Gu Yanshen remained silent throughout all this, only standing there, his sharp eyes tracking each item as it was loaded onto the vehicle. He personally checked the thickness and dryness of the boards, pressed the elasticity of the pork belly with his fingers, ensuring everything was in perfect order. Rather than feeling offended, Chief Zhou regarded Mr. Gu’s serious diligence as commendable, and ultimately even brought a can of malt extract, which wasn’t available on the market, and stuffed it into the vehicle.
"Mr. Gu, take care! If Sister Lin... no, if Teacher Lin needs anything, just say the word!"
Gu Yanshen didn’t say much, borrowed a cart, neatly stacked the mound of supplies, rolled up the sleeves of his military shirt, revealing bronzed, well-defined forearms, and singlehandedly pulled the heavy cart shaft.
The sunset elongated his shadow tremendously.
In the family compound, smoke from cooking wafted lazily into the sky.
"Look quickly! Isn’t that Mr. Gu?"
"Oh my! Is he... pulling the cart himself? Am I seeing things?"
Sister in law Zhang returned from the vegetable garden just in time to witness the astonishing scene. Gu Yanshen, at a height of 1.9 meters, dressed in a crisp military uniform, was usually stern and taciturn, enough to silence a crying child just by walking past. But now, he was pulling a cart piled with timber, rice bags, and slabs of meat, his military green shirt soaked with sweat, clinging tightly to his body, outlining broad shoulders and a perfect V-shaped torso.
The sight was even more shocking than seeing pigs rain down from the sky.
"Oh my heavens!" Sister in law Zhang’s loud voice echoed through half the compound, "Everyone, come look! Mr. Gu brought back a cart full of goodies! Those are timber boards, right? There must be at least a dozen! And such a big sack of white rice! Is that meat wrapped in greased paper? Such a big piece! There’s red sugar, snow cream... and oh my, even malt extract!"
Her voice was like a live commentary. In an instant, doors opened everywhere, military wives with rice bowls in hand leaned against door frames, whispering to one another.
"What kind of fortune did Lin Wan Yi accumulate to have Mr. Gu, the living Yama, toiling like a workhorse for her?"
"He’s truly doting on his wife to the bone, doing all this hard work himself! My husband even complains when I ask him to fetch a bucket of water!"
"I used to think he was cold and intimidating, but now I see, this is what a real man is! Willing to do anything for his wife!"
The envious, astonished whispers, tinged with a hint of bitterness, spread like a wave through the entire family compound.
Lin Wan Yi heard the commotion outside and opened the door to step out.
At a glance, she saw the man walking towards her in the glow of the setting sun, pulling a cart full of "spoils of war". He was like a moving mountain, each step firm and powerful.
The cart stopped outside her door, its wheels making a low grating sound against the ground.
Gu Yanshen released the shaft, sweat from his temple trailing down his sharply defined jawline, dripping onto his prominent Adam’s apple.
Lin Wan Yi said nothing, turned back inside, and came back out with a damp towel. She quickly walked over to him and handed it over.
"Wipe off."
The towel, soaked in spiritual spring water, carried a refreshing chill. Gu Yanshen took it, his rough hand unintentionally grazing her soft fingertips. He randomly wiped his face and neck with the towel, instantly dispelling the heat.
Then, he began unloading the goods in silence.
A bag of plump, fresh rice, a tightly wrapped, three-pound slab of pork belly in greased paper, a packet of red sugar, a box of jasmine-scented snow cream, a roll of red Dacron fabric for making hairbands... Everything on the list was there, and even more generously than noted.
Next came the thick pine boards, a heavy bag of nails, a brand new hammer, and a gleaming saw. Finally, he took out the can of malt extract from beneath the cart.
He neatly placed these items under the eaves, like a triumphant general counting his spoils of war.
After finishing everything, he straightened up and turned to look at Lin Wan Yi.
Lin Wan Yi was standing just a step away, her moist eyes sparkling brightly as they looked at him, filled with scattered starlight. She suddenly rose on her tiptoes, leaned close to his ear, and her breath was like orchids.
"Gu, the great hero, your spoils are bountiful," her voice was light and soft, brushing his earlobe like a feather, "So... do you want the ’special reward’ we talked about now?"
Gu Yanshen’s tall body suddenly stiffened, the heat that the towel had suppressed surged up with a "boom", rushing from the base of his neck to the top of his head, turning his ears bright red.
But this time, he didn’t back away.
He suddenly turned, his gaze fierce, captured Lin Wan Yi’s slender wrist in one swift motion, and pulled her forcefully towards him!
Lin Wan Yi yelped in surprise, her entire body crashing into his hard, burning chest. Before she could steady herself, his other large hand had already clasped the back of her head, firmly locking her in his embrace.
He lowered his head, his hot breath all spraying onto her cheeks, those profound eyes surging with unfathomable undercurrents.
His voice was hoarse, like it had been rubbed with sandpaper.
"You said it."
