Marrying My Bestie's Ferocious Brother - He Calls Me His Baby!-Chapter 18: The Nasty Neighbor Comes Looking for Trouble? Win Them Over with a Bag of Rock Sugar!
Just before dawn, Gu Yanshen quietly got out of bed.
Lin Wan Yi was awakened by the rustling sound of him dressing, squinting her eyes to watch him put on that crisp military uniform, his tall figure in the dim morning light, like a silent mountain.
The man fastened the last button, turned around, and directly met her gaze.
He paused his step, walked to the bed, and tucked in her blanket corners.
"I’m off. The food is in the pot, kept warm."
Lin Wan Yi blinked, stretched out a dazzlingly white hand from the blanket, and beckoned with her finger.
Gu Yanshen’s body stiffened for a moment, but he still bent down according to her gesture.
Lin Wan Yi propped herself up, and lightly touched his cold, hard cheek.
"Come back early, construction team leader."
The tips of the man’s ears turned red the instant she finished speaking. He said nothing, turned around with long strides, almost fleeing in haste.
After seeing off the "construction team leader", Lin Wan Yi stretched lazily, feeling full of energy.
She changed into an old outfit easy to move in, tied up her hair neatly, ready to thoroughly clean the house from inside out.
She opened the door with a creak, wanting to let the dust and smell inside the room dissipate.
Outside the door, a figure, as if waiting for a long time, immediately came forward.
"Hey, Lin, you’re awake?"
It was Sister in law Wang. She was empty-handed, a pair of squinty eyes darting eagerly inside the room, her mouth carrying a malicious smile.
"I heard the sounds from your place yesterday, Mr. Gu really dotes on his wife, even serving as a carpenter for you. Unlike us hardened ones, whose men are in the military all day long, leaving us to handle all the housework ourselves."
The sourness in her words almost overflowed.
Lin Wan Yi leaned against the door frame, without responding, and just looked at her casually.
Sister in law Wang felt uneasy under her gaze, coughed dryly, and boldly peered into the house: "So the partition is done? Tsk tsk, city folks sure have standards. But no matter how you tidy up the countryside place, it can’t compare to even a finger of the city, right?"
"Sister in law Wang, what are you doing blocking someone’s door early in the morning?"
A cheerful voice came from the side.
Sister in law Zhang approached, holding a chipped large bowl, from which hot steam rose, containing several golden cornbread.
Without glancing at Sister in law Wang, she directly handed the bowl to Lin Wan Yi.
"Lin, freshly steamed cornbread, give it a try! Knowing you city folks aren’t used to coarse grains, use this to cushion your stomach first."
Sister in law Wang’s face couldn’t hold up any longer there.
Lin Wan Yi’s face broke into a smile, readily taking the bowl: "Thank you, Sister in law Zhang, you truly are my timely assistance! Come in and sit!"
She was pulling Sister in law Zhang to enter the house, completely treating Sister in law Wang as air.
Sister in law Wang’s complexion turned ashen white, gritting her teeth, yet still thick-skinnedly followed in.
Once inside, both women froze.
The once dilapidated room was now clean as a whistle. The floor was swept spotless, the newly made wooden partition, though simple, made the space appear orderly. The broad reinforced bed, especially, caught the eyes of the army wives who had been squeezing onto small beds for years.
The sharp words Sister in law Wang had prepared got stuck in her throat instantly.
"You’re really capable, Lin!" Sister in law Zhang sincerely praised.
Lin Wan Yi poured Sister in law Zhang a cup of hot water, then gave Sister in law Wang a sideways glance, nonchalantly: "Would Sister in law Wang like some water too?"
Sister in law Wang stiffly replied with a dry "hm".
Lin Wan Yi started rummaging through her luggage. Sister in law Wang’s eyes lit up immediately, intently watching her actions, expecting to see some rare food.
Lin Wan Yi took out a small oiled paper package without even looking at Sister in law Wang, directly placing it in Sister in law Zhang’s hands.
"Sister in law Zhang, thank you for the cornbread today. This is a bit of rock candy I brought from home, not worth much, for you to take back and make a drink for the kids, soothe their throats."
Rock candy?!
Both Sister in law Zhang’s and Sister in law Wang’s eyes widened simultaneously.
At that time, rock candy was a precious item, something people only dared to buy a little of during special occasions.
"This, this is too much! Too precious!" Sister in law Zhang quickly declined.
Sister in law Wang’s hand clenched tightly beside her, nails digging painfully into her palm. She hadn’t even gotten a taste of that sugar!
"If you don’t take it, Sister, it means you look down on me." Lin Wan Yi firmly shoved the sugar into Sister in law Zhang’s pocket, "I just arrived and will need to learn a lot from you in the future."
Sister in law Zhang felt the hefty block in her pocket, her heart warming, her gaze towards Lin Wan Yi changing. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
"Then... then I’ll take it with a thick skin." She beamed with joy, completely accepting Lin Wan Yi as one of her own.
The conversation warmed up as they continued chatting.
Sister in law Wang sat on the side, like sitting on pins and needles, unable to interject a single word.
Seeing she couldn’t gain any favor, she finally couldn’t hold back, sarcastically remarked: "Speaking of which, yesterday I heard Li Xiujuan bragging endlessly, saying you ate fresh cucumbers in the morning? Lin, in this freezing weather, where did you conjure up cucumbers?"
All conversation ceased.
Sister in law Zhang also looked over curiously, but her gaze was purely inquisitive.
Lin Wan Yi put down the cup, smiling.
She was just about to speak when Sister in law Wang interjected, "Could it be some shady way? Our army compound highly values discipline."
"Sister in law Wang!" Sister in law Zhang couldn’t take it anymore, frowned.
Lin Wan Yi raised her hand to calm Sister in law Zhang, still as composed as ever, she looked at Sister in law Wang, speaking clearly: "My man is Gu Yanshen. Fearing I’d struggle to adjust, he went to great lengths to trade with a comrade for a couple. What, do you think my man isn’t capable or I’m unworthy of what he gets me?"
Her words were powerful and resonant.
Directly elevating the issue to the level of "You look down on my man" and "You doubt a hero’s ability".
Sister in law Wang’s face turned ghostly pale, her lips quivered, unable to utter a single word.
How dare she speak ill of Gu Yanshen?
"I... I didn’t mean that..." She stood up awkwardly, "I... I have soup simmering at home, I’ll go now!"
With that, she dashed out of the room, almost running away.
Sister in law Zhang watched her retreat, letting out a hearty chuckle.
Lin Wan Yi escorted Sister in law Zhang to the door, they were chatting when Sister in law Wang, having just reached the yard entrance, collided headlong with someone hurrying in.
It was Li Xiujuan!
Li Xiujuan held an empty glass medicinal bottle, upon seeing Lin Wan Yi, her eyes lit up, she shoved past the obstructing Sister in law Wang, charging over to Lin Wan Yi, excitedly raising the bottle.
Her voice was high and loud, enough for half the courtyard to hear.
"Lin! Lin, this Medicinal Wine of yours is miraculous!"
This shout turned several heads of army wives washing clothes by the well, ready to head out.
Sister in law Wang was frozen on the spot, her face worse than a dead person’s.
Li Xiujuan was oblivious, gripping Lin Wan Yi’s hand, her face flushed with excitement: "My husband, Old Li, just applied it once last night! Only once! And this morning, his back, which had been strained for over half a month, didn’t hurt at all! He said it’s a hundred times more effective than the safflower oil at the medical team! Lin, you’ve truly saved our family from a crisis!"
Her words left the entire courtyard in a deathly silence.
Every gaze fixated on the empty bottle in Lin Wan Yi and Li Xiujuan’s hands, filled with shock and disbelief.
The cucumber uproar hadn’t settled, and here was another "miracle remedy" more effective than the military doctor’s?
Who exactly was this new military wife of the regiment’s leader?!
