Marrying His Nemesis: Kicking My Scumbag Fiancé Away!-Chapter 131: The One Who Lost Isn’t You, It’s Me! (Part 1)
Soon, the owner brought over a bowl of steaming porridge.
Seraphina Thorne lowered her head, looking at the porridge in front of her.
The porridge she usually loved felt unappetizing today.
"I know you don’t like me saying thank you, but I still want to thank you for helping in court today."
"This case is not just your Thorne Family’s business; it also involves the Zenith Group’s project. Of course, I had to be there." Ethan Sterling pushed the spoon on the table towards her. "Let’s eat."
Seraphina remembered that every time she said "thank you" before, he was always unhappy.
But this time, Ethan Sterling wasn’t.
His tone was gentle, nothing like the domineering strength he showed before.
Listening to his gentle voice made Seraphina feel a bit uncomfortable.
Now, he accepted her thanks so calmly, perhaps because he no longer cared?
Somehow, the porridge in her mouth tasted bitter.
She took a light breath, adjusting her tone.
"Next Monday, I am free in the morning, say 8 o’clock. I’ll bring the marriage certificate to the civil affairs bureau to wait for you."
Ethan Sterling was silent for a moment before lightly acknowledging.
"Okay."
The atmosphere at the dining table once again became a bit awkward.
Luckily, the owner came over, bringing the buns they ordered, a basket of custard buns placed in front of her, and a basket of meat buns placed in front of Ethan Sterling.
"The wontons are a little slow, please wait for a bit." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Ethan Sterling nodded, picked up his chopsticks, and bowed his head to eat his buns.
Smelling the meat in the air, Seraphina felt nauseous again. She grabbed a napkin and covered her mouth.
Ethan Sterling noticed her discomfort, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing." Seraphina suppressed her discomfort, shaking her head gently, "I need to go to the bathroom."
Standing up, she quickly walked to the restroom.
She stood by the sink, retching for a long time, and only spat out two mouthfuls of sour water.
Although she hadn’t eaten much, her stomach felt like it was weighed down by a stone, uncomfortable and heavy.
"Is the breakfast not to your liking?"
The owner happened to walk in to get a mop, seeing her condition, she paused with concern.
"No..." Seraphina quickly waved her hand, "I just have an upset stomach recently, always feeling nauseous."
The owner looked her over carefully, smiling ambiguously.
"You might be pregnant, it’s like this in the beginning, it gets better over time."
Seraphina wanted to explain but the owner had already left with the mop.
Looking at her face in the mirror, Seraphina gave a self-mocking smile.
She wiped the water from her face with a napkin and came out of the bathroom.
Glancing at Ethan Sterling sitting at the table, she didn’t have the courage to sit back across from him.
After settling the bill at the counter, she forced a smile, looking as if nothing was wrong, returning to the table.
"Take your time eating, I have something to handle at the orchestra, I’ll leave first."
"I’ll walk you out."
Ethan Sterling put down his chopsticks, trying to stand up.
"No need, just enjoy your meal." Seraphina smiled, pressing his shoulder to push him back down into the chair, "This is the first time I’ve treated you to a meal, don’t waste it."
Grabbing her coat and bag, she waved goodbye with a smile and hurriedly walked out the restaurant door.
She didn’t turn back even when she reached the street, hailing a taxi and getting in.
She was scared.
Scared she might accidentally expose her truest feelings.
So, she didn’t see it.
Ethan Sterling, sitting at the table, kept watching her back until Seraphina got in the taxi and left, before withdrawing his gaze.
He picked up his chopsticks, stuffing the buns on the table into his mouth in large bites.
After finishing his own basket, he took Seraphina’s leftover buns and swallowed them down one by one.
This was the first time she treated him to a meal, and probably the last.
Ethan Sterling didn’t want to waste anything, forcefully stuffing both of their meals into his stomach.
After swallowing the last mouthful of porridge, his stomach felt a bit uncomfortably full.
"Having a tantrum?" Upon seeing Ethan Sterling stand up, the owner came over with a smile to clean up the dishes on the table, "Women are like this during pregnancy. I was the same, the doctor said something about hormone secretion or whatever, I didn’t understand... You men just need to be a bit soft, coax her a little, isn’t that enough?"
Ethan Sterling only smiled bitterly at her words.
Alas—
Sadly, the situation between him and Seraphina wasn’t that simple.
...
...
Early on Monday, it began to snow lightly again.
Ivy Langley, who was on a business trip, specifically left her car keys with Seraphina Thorne, allowing her to drive around.
Seraphina had left quite early, but when she approached the civil affairs bureau, there was a traffic jam caused by an accident ahead.
It took a full hour on the road before she drove up to the civil affairs bureau entrance.
Looking around, she didn’t see Ethan Sterling. As she prepared to take out her phone to call him—
Sean Hale was already striding over from not far away.
"President Sterling had an urgent matter last night and had to leave on a business trip. He didn’t want to disturb your rest late in the night, so he specifically asked me to inform you that the divorce might need to be delayed by a few days. He said... to apologize to you on his behalf."
Seraphina nodded lightly, "It’s fine, then... whenever he’s available. I’ll go now."
Seeing her move down the steps and get into the car.
Sean couldn’t hold back, wading through the snow to catch up.
"Ma’am... I mean... Miss Thorne, can I have a word with you?"
Hearing his voice, Seraphina braked, but did not roll down her window.
"What’s it about?"
Sean stood outside the car window, hesitating several times before finally speaking.
"I know this matter between you and President Sterling is private, and as an assistant, I shouldn’t interfere, but... I really don’t want to see you two separate like this."
Sean frowned, his tone deep.
"I also know that he coerce-married you back then, it was quite excessive indeed. But...
I’ve been by President Sterling’s side for five years, and I’ve never seen him treat any woman as well as he treats you.
If you’re thinking this is about Miss Foster, then you’re completely mistaken.
The only reason President Sterling takes such care of Miss Foster is because of Attorney Foster.
He only sees Miss Foster as a sister. The woman he truly cares about all these years... is only you.
I’m saying this not to excuse President Sterling, but because I sincerely hope you reconsider the matter of the divorce."
Honk—
The car behind her urged impatiently with the horn.
"I’ll go now."
Seraphina started the car, merging into the lane, driving all the way to the orchestra entrance.
She parked the car and walked towards the orchestra entrance with her instrument.
Unconsciously, she recalled when Ethan Sterling took her to the rehabilitation center and held her, saying that...
...
"Whether you believe me or not, I have to say this again: from beginning to end, I’ve never betrayed you.
...
He had already agreed to divorce; there was no need to lie to her anymore.
Could it be that she really misunderstood him?
"Seraphina!"
On the steps, a familiar voice called out.
