Chapter 34 — THE MAN AT THE GATES

The wind hit Elena’s face the moment she stepped outside, cold enough to sting, sharp enough to cut through the thin layer of control she had left. Her heart hammered painfully as she followed Adrian down the long stone path leading toward the mansion gates.

Every step felt heavier — as if she was walking toward a past she had spent years trying to outrun.

"Adrian," she whispered, struggling to steady her voice. "Tell me again... what did he say?"

Adrian didn’t stop walking, but his jaw tightened.

"He said your name. Full name. He insisted he must speak to you, not security, not me. You."

Her stomach dropped.

Someone knowing her full name was already a threat.

Someone showing up here — at the most secure mansion in the city — was worse.

"Did he say how he knows me?" she asked quietly.

"No," Adrian said. "But his tone... it wasn’t hostile. It sounded urgent. Desperate."

Elena swallowed hard.

Urgency didn’t comfort her.

Desperation was usually the beginning of disaster.

As the tall iron gates came into view, her steps slowed. A knot twisted in her stomach. Adrian noticed instantly and turned to face her.

"Elena," he said, voice low and steady, "you’re not alone. Whatever this is, whatever he wants, I’m right here."

Her breath trembled.

This man — this ruthless, cold billionaire she wasn’t supposed to feel anything for — was giving her more comfort than anyone ever had.

She nodded weakly.

Adrian offered his hand, palm open.

Not forceful.

Not demanding.

Just offering.

Elena hesitated... then placed her hand in his.

Warm. Strong. Steady.

Their fingers intertwined naturally, as if they had been doing this all their lives.

Together, they walked to the gate.

Two guards stood alert, rigid, their expressions grim. When Adrian approached, one of them immediately stepped forward.

"Sir," the guard said, "he refused to leave. Says he won’t move until he speaks to her."

Adrian’s eyes hardened. "Where is he?"

The guard gestured toward a small waiting area near the outer path.

Elena followed Adrian’s gaze...

And froze.

There, sitting on the edge of a stone bench, was a man she hadn’t seen in almost two years.

Tall.

Lean.

Weather-worn face.

Dark eyes that held too many secrets.

And a thin scar running down his left cheek.

Her breath vanished.

"Marcus..." she whispered.

Adrian’s head snapped toward her, shock cutting across his expression.

"You know him?" Adrian asked sharply.

Elena nodded slowly — too slowly.

Marcus stood the moment he saw her. His eyes widened, relief flooding them.

"Elena," he breathed, stepping forward.

But Adrian moved instantly, positioning himself in front of her, shielding her from Marcus.

"Stop right there," Adrian warned, his voice dangerously calm.

Marcus froze, hands lifting in surrender. "I just want to talk to her."

Adrian’s tone dropped colder. "You don’t come to my gates demanding anything."

Elena stepped forward slightly, her voice trembling. "Adrian... it’s okay. I need to hear him."

Adrian studied her — long, hard, searching for any sign she might be in danger.

He didn’t move from her side, but he allowed Marcus to speak.

Marcus exhaled shakily.

"Elena... I looked for you everywhere," he said. "You disappeared. One day you were gone — no calls, no messages — nothing. And after what happened with—"

"Stop."

Elena’s voice cracked like glass.

"Don’t say that here."

Marcus swallowed, understanding.

His voice softened.

"I had to find you. I had to see if you were alive."

Adrian tensed beside her.

"Elena," he murmured quietly, "who is he?"

Elena’s throat tightened painfully.

She couldn’t speak.

She wasn’t ready.

Not here.

Not with her secrets trembling on the brink of exposure.

Marcus looked between them and clenched his jaw.

"Elena," he said firmly, "you need to come with me. You’re in danger."

Adrian stepped forward, eyes blazing.

"She’s not going anywhere with you."

"It’s not your choice," Marcus snapped.

"It damn well is," Adrian shot back, "she is under my roof, under my security, under my protection."

Marcus let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Protection? You think you can protect her from what’s coming?"

"Marcus!" Elena shouted, her voice trembling. "Stop!"

Both men froze at the crack in her tone.

She closed her eyes, gripping her forehead.

Everything was spiraling too fast.

The secrets she buried...

The plan she crafted...

The revenge she came here for...

Marcus showing up now could destroy all of it.

"Elena," he said more gently, "I didn’t come to fight. I came to warn you."

She lifted her gaze slowly.

"What danger?"

Marcus looked directly at Adrian — as if calculating whether he could speak freely.

"Elena," he said carefully, "it’s about Lydia."

Elena’s blood froze completely.

Adrian stiffened.

"Who the hell is Lydia?" he demanded.

Marcus exhaled deeply.

"Elena’s sister," he said. "The one who died because of your family."

Silence.

Sharp.

Devastating.

Explosive.

Adrian’s face drained of color.

Elena felt her knees weaken.

"No," she whispered. "Not here... not like this..."

Marcus continued anyway, his voice breaking.

"I told you years ago, Elena — the Kanes were involved. And now someone... someone wants to finish what they started."

Adrian turned to Elena slowly, pain and shock twisting across his features.

"Elena," he whispered, voice raw, "is this true?"

Her heart shattered.

This was the moment she feared.

The moment when her past and present exploded into each other.

The moment Adrian Kane — the man she was supposed to destroy — looked at her not with coldness... but with hurt.

"Elena," he whispered again, "did my family... did they hurt your sister?"

Tears filled her eyes.

But before she could answer —

Marcus stepped closer.

"Elena," he said, breath shaking, "you have to choose now. Come with me — or stay here and be dragged into something you can’t escape."

Guards tensed.

Adrian’s fists clenched.

Elena stood trapped between two lives — the one she built on revenge, and the one she was accidentally falling into.

And she knew...

Whatever choice she made next would determine everything.
