Chapter 202: Dead Person_Part 1

"Witch cake?" came Rohan’s dangerously dark, alarmed voice. "You can shove your witch cake down your—"

"Good, I like witch cakes. How much are they? Let me have a taste of one!" Belle said with enthusiasm as she glared at Rohan, who seemed to believe the cakes were literal witch cakes.

For someone who had not stepped out into the world since he was a boy to be around real people and humans, Belle could understand how all this was to him and how he couldn’t see that the man behind the stall needed the money.

The man’s coat was torn and thin, something that did not look good enough to keep him warm in such weather, and his son was not wearing anything better. She had been around people like this in Aragonia to know what their lives were like. She always went to the market and had many acquaintances with people who came from low-class families and tried to make ends meet, just like this man.

But knowing Rohan, he did not care, or perhaps he did not see beyond his dislike for humans, and she did not blame him for it at all.

She leaned to whisper to him as the man and his son opened the transparent leather covering over the snacks to take one out for her.

"Stop scowling like that, my dear. They are just cakes, they are not literal witch cakes. They need the money, and we have enough to help and give. Let’s buy some, it won’t harm anybody."

She told him, and then pulled back to look at the man behind the stall.

"Each one is a silver coin, but you can take them for a cent. Here you go." He handed her one on a newsletter parchment, and she took it with a "Thank you."

Rohan had brought her through this fair because he wanted them to walk the rest of the way to an eatery he had heard was the best in the city, which was why he had not made them have breakfast at home. Now, seeing how she was taking this black cake from the man, he was tempted to stop her. He did not trust any of these people, as there were too many heartbeats around him to focus on one particular person and judge whether they meant good or harm.

However, he prepared himself. If this cake turned out to be something harmful, he would not care about anything and would kill this man along with his son, who had brought them here. He scowled all the way as Belle took the cake into her mouth and, with a hesitant look, began to chew it.

At first, Belle frowned at the unfamiliar taste, until she chewed further and the flavor broke on her tongue. There was something milky in the middle of the cake that brought more sweetness to it.

She chewed and took another bite until she finished the one in her hand and looked at the seller. "Oh my Lord, that is one of the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted. Can I have more?"

The man smiled and nodded his head quickly as he reached to bring out another and handed it to her. This time, however, Belle turned to bring the cake toward Rohan’s mouth.

"Have a bite." She nudged the cake toward his slightly parted lips, which opened reluctantly. He accepted it, still scowling with distrust toward the humans.

Rohan had eaten worse things in his life, and though he didn’t care about the cake being black, he simply didn’t trust it. He was always wary of things he didn’t know, especially when they were made by creatures he fed from. But he let her feed him anyway, if it was something harmful and she had eaten it, it was only right that he had it as well.

He chewed slowly, expecting the worst, but the moment the flavor spread across his tongue, his brow twitched in surprise. He looked down at the black thing in her hand, still chewing, slower now, thoughtful.

"...It’s sweet," he said at last, his voice low.

"We will have more then," Belle announced happily. "How much is everything on the stall?" she asked the man, and he looked at her, stunned.

"Everything?" he asked, unable to believe she had said that. Because if he managed to sell everything, it would mean dinner and tomorrow’s breakfast for his family and children.

"Yes, my husband and I would like to eat some here and also share some with the kids playing down the street there," she said, pointing to where she had noticed Cowen’s friends playing in the snow.

With tears in the man’s eyes, he said almost eagerly, "Everything here is two gold coins, but I will take even one."

"How about we pay you ten gold coins? This is way too good to be sold that cheap, right, my love?" Belle turned to Rohan, who had already started eating the cakes without the slightest hesitation after tasting one.

He was still chewing when he shrugged, as if to say it was up to her and that whatever she wanted, he would give it away. His expression was no longer guarded like it had been, and he reached out for another cake placed on the parchment paper in front of him.

Belle smiled softly, finding him utterly adorable in that moment. He had always been someone who could eat endlessly and never seemed to get full as long as the food was there. And all of yesterday, she had noticed how his appetite had returned with a vengeance, like his body needed more food and blood than it did before.

Belle ate the cakes until she could no longer stomach another bite, and then she handed the rest to her husband, who accepted them and finished it for her when she said she did not want to waste them.

Cowen’s father had given them a bench to sit beside his stall under a roof area to eat the cakes. And apart from the snow on the ground, no more snow had fallen, and she watched her husband all through as Cowen’s father shared the cakes they had bought with his son’s friends.

No matter how dangerous Rohan looked on the outside, Belle had come to see through him: Rohan was not a completely cold-hearted man, in fact she was starting to believe he had the softest heart.

And he proved that to her after they finished eating.

Without a single word, he reached into his coat and pulled out a pouch of gold coins. He handed it to the stunned seller, the weight of it clearly far more than what they had agreed to pay. The man’s eyes widened, his hands trembling as he received it with both reverence and disbelief.

"This... Sir, it’s too much for what you bought," the man said almost tremblingly.

Rohan dusted his palm to get rid of the cake crumbs as he chewed his last bite and then clicked his tongue as he studied the human before him who seemed reluctant in taking the money when it was obvious he needed it.

He wasn’t the kind to give his things out, especially his money, unless that person was his dear bunny. But he was giving now because this little bunny was too compassionate for her own good, and for some absurd reason, that compassion was rubbing off on him and making him see how the human needed the coins.

"Tsk. If you don’t want it, you can give me back my money. That son of yours needs to get his teeth fixed, they look hideous when he smiles, and you also need a new coat, but since you’re reluctant, I will take back my—"

"No, sir. I want it!" the man said quickly as Rohan reached out to take his coins. "I just don’t know how to repay you for it."

"You can repay by..." Rohan trailed off as a thought came to his mind when he noticed how Belle was playing with the kids who had come to take the cakes. She was laughing and smiling at whatever it was they were telling her. Rohan then turned to the man and said, "It’s her birthday. I want to make her happy. Get your kid and tell him..."

Rohan explained to the man what he wanted, and then he went back to his wife, who was still with the kids, just as the seller called his son and the other kids.

They left Belle’s side, and she looked disappointed to lose their company.
