Chapter 60: Call from the dead 2

She fiddled nervously with her fire-sparking fingers, her gaze fixed on the ethereal man standing in front of her, expressionless.

She didn’t know what to say nor had he uttered anything. He was staring at her as she sat on the bed, as if he was searching for her soul, as he always did.

Her mind was a jumbled mess. The night was going well until she fell asleep, only to have a strange dream.

...

Sage had fallen asleep and awoke in complete darkness.

Of course, the first thing she said in panic was, "Cyrus! Cyrus, where are you?"

She was frustrated as she couldn’t see anything. She tried using her powers to provide light, but not even a spark appeared. She kept trying and began to walk around in confusion, hoping to find a way out of the darkness.

She arrived in a much darker place, grunting and snapping her fingers in the hope of seeing a fire, but there was none.

"What.." She felt her bare feet in something liquid, and it felt disgusting.

It felt familiar, and she took hurried steps away, gasping in terror.

Was she back in the sea of blood?

"How come this is happening?" She grunted in frustration and clenched her fists, but nothing happened.

She kept testing her abilities, which was why in reality, her fingertips were faintly sparking with fire.

"Come to me, Sage..." A familiar feminine voice echoed, sounding very close.

"Come to me, Sage..." The voice seemed to fade away gradually.

Sage recognised the voice and realised it had to be a dream. The owner of the voice she was hearing was the person who had given birth to her and had only been with her for four years. Her mother had passed away.

"Mother.." Sage lowered her head as her voice trailed off. "It is not possible."

"He is dangerous... not to be trusted... do whatever you can to kill him... Do not let your emotions blind you from the truth..." She heard a mother say, the voice getting closer.

Sage sighed deeply and raised her head, her gaze fixed on the dark direction of the voice. Could it be her mother?

"You are talking about Cyrus." Sage took a breath.

"The ice dragon is and will always be a threat that must be eliminated." She could hear rage in the voice.

"He is not going to kill me," Sage said slowly.

"And this is how you will be used until you are killed. Do not let your emotions cloud your judgement of the truth..."

"What is the truth?" Sage screamed angrily. She’d had enough of it. "What truth? Truth that Fa.. Julius was not my father? The eternal winter did not kill you, but aunt Lia? I am sure there is a lot more I do not know about." Sage’s voice twitched, and her heart was heavy. "Because I have been deceived since birth, a pawn... It may be that you.. you weren’t also my mother!" She yelled.

"Nonsense!" In rage, the voice shrieked.

Sage was enraged. It couldn’t possibly be her mother.

"Sage!" Was it her mother’s voice she heard scream behind her?

"Mother?" Sage exclaimed and turned to face the direction. She sounded as if she was drowning.

"Find it! The lost portal of Statkus! The lost secrets and information of the mages are kept there!" The voice screamed and gasped for breath.

"Silence!" Screamed the voice in front of her.

"Go now!" The drowning voice behind her screamed, and she recognised it as her mother, who was drowning.

"Are you my mother?" Sage shivered.

She could feel the being in front of her was charging towards her.

"Sage! Go now!" Her mother, who was allegedly drowning, screamed.

"M..mother? No, mother!" Sage screamed hysterically, wanting to follow the direction of her drowning mother’s voice, but just as one of her feet stepped into the disgusting liquid, she opened her eyes to meet fear-filled ice blue eyes.

...

"Are you sure you are not going to tell me anything?" Cyrus inquired, his face expressionless.

"I am sorry, but I cannot." Sage remained firm in her words.

Cyrus nodded and chewed his lower lip, his gaze shifting to the balcony where his panthers were sleeping.

Sage felt bad, but she had made the decision not to fall for any more tricks or act stupid in order to be easily controlled as a pawn.

Even though her and Cyrus’ relationship had improved slightly, and probably even more so after their bath earlier... Sage couldn’t help but smile as the memories flashed through her mind.

She took a deep breath. ’Focus,’ she said to herself.

She could not trust him fully. He was the ice dragon, and he was unmistakably ruthless. Things must have settled between them, but that didn’t mean she could fully trust him; after all, he was a threat to her life.

There was a being that sounded exactly like her mother who told her not to let emotions blind her from the truth, and Cyrus seemed to know so much about her, so much about her that she didn’t know herself.

What kind of creature was that?

She was certain she had been summoned back to the land of the sea of blood. Was it her mother who had summoned her? Was her mother a lost soul? Why did she sound like she was drowning? Why was it so dark?

"Do you know why there was no sign of mages in your kingdom when we arrived?"

Sage turned her gaze to Cyrus, who was caressing Snowflake in his arms.

"W..why?" Sage was curious, but couldn’t help but wonder why he was suddenly bringing up that subject.

Cyrus’ lips twitched. "Katherine, your dear friend, fled a few days before you decided to flee. She most likely discovered Esteban’s visit to Credia, as well as some additional Julius and Dexter secrets." He revealed, his tone flat.

Sage’s eyes widened in surprise. "She told them all to leave Credia; I am sure they are all together." Sage sounded excited and smiled faintly.

Cyrus didn’t look at her, and the tension in the room was unusual.

"Esteban’s dogs were Julius and Dexter. They were only there to get to you." Cyrus said with a chuckle.

Sage smirked. "I am not surprised anymore and I do not see what is so amusing in it." She grumbled angrily.

Her eyes widened in surprise as she remembered Dexter.

"Dexter!" She exclaimed and rose to her feet.

"I do not see him here," Cyrus chuckled deeply and fixed his gaze on her.

"Did you kill him?"
