Chapter 41: Destroyed spirit, destroyed kingdom

Only the roars of dragons flying above and the whistle of the wind could be heard. The cold wind blew hard, extinguishing all the lit fires in the kingdom.

Sage’s fiery eyes narrowed at Esteban, who appeared stunned at seeing her.

"Why hasn’t he killed you yet?" Sage scoffed when he asked.

Raging fire whips appeared on her hands, and she gripped them tightly, breathing in and out before directing the whip to one of the stunned-looking men, whipping off his upper body from his lower body.

The woman on the ground screamed in terror.

Esteban laughed. "Furious?" He inquired, mockingly.

"Serious." Sage hissed and fired her whip at him, only for him to catch it.

Esteban didn’t think he’d be able to catch her whip. His brows furrowed in surprise. "You are weak, fire mage."

He was right; she was exhausted.

The whip he had caught vanished, and the men at his sides laughed before transforming into massive brown scaled dragons.

"You said if I married him, you wouldn’t attack my kingdom." Sage didn’t want to cry in front of him because it would show how weak she was. Controlling her tears was difficult, especially since she was in the midst of her home’s ruins.

Esteban erupted in laughter. "And you believed stupidly, but not because of me... no, no, dear fire mage, but he also wrote to you to persuade you." Esteban’s revelation caused her to narrow her eyes in confusion.

"What?"

Esteban laughed even harder. "You think you’re capable of killing him? To end the never-ending winter? So stupid!" He laughed to his heart’s content.

"What?" Sage asked again, this time in hushed tone as she tried to process what she was hearing. "I thought you two were enemies?" She inquired, the fire around her slowly dissipating.

Esteban laughed at the naive girl in front of him. "We are enemies. I believe you should inquire with your husband as to what is going on."

Sage swallowed hard.

She had to understand what he was saying. She needed her father! He’d answer her questions, of course.

She turned away, wanting to run back to the castle, but she came to a halt when both fire dragons roared loudly.

"Where do you think you’re going?" Esteban asked, sighing. "Since Cyrus Dragos didn’t kill you, I might as well do the honours." He smiled.

Sage let out a long, frustrated sigh. She was too weak to fight him, and she had more important things to do.

She took another step away when she was hit by a powerful blast of hotness that pushed her out of her stance and into a half-burned house.

It was fire, which hurt her because she was weak.

She whimpered and sat down on the black coal ground. Her arm had been burned.

Her eyes welled up with tears as her heart was filled with frustration, confusion, pain, and anger.

She was curious about what was going on... Finding her father was her top priority at the time.

She grunted and stood up.

"Why are you so weak, fire mage?" She overheard Esteban ask.

Sage walked out of the half-burned house, a pained smile on her face.

"Leave me alone for the time being; you can kill me later." She told him calmly, and he burst out laughing.

"What happened to your threat to kill me, dear fire mage? You know nothing because you are worthless, poor child." He spat and laughed.

Sage inhaled and turned away, not wanting to respond to him.

Esteban frowned deeply, his hands engulfed in flames, ready to blast her when he noticed a familiar black furry creature staring at him murderously with full black eyes that held something lethal.

"The nine-tailed fox?" Esteban exclaimed, and the fire on his hands vanished.

He didn’t want to start a fight with Cyrus, who was most likely in his dark state. He had already destroyed what he needed to, and it was relaxing for him.

Laughing, he transformed into his dragon form, picked up the woman, and flew away, followed by the other dragons.

"Help me!" Sage’s attention was drawn to her scream.

Sage sighed as Esteban and the dragons vanished into the dark clouds.

"I am sorry," she muttered as she began running back to the castle.

When she got close, she heard raging dragon roars and gasped in surprise as she saw a black dragon above the castle crashing in it and breathing fire at Cyrus, who was in his dark state and swiftly dodging the dragon’s attack.

"Who is that?" She asked, her voice raspy.

Victor and the other guards were behind Cyrus, dodging the attacks as well.

Sage’s spirit, like the castle, was destroyed.

"Father! Where are you?" She yelled, capturing everyone’s attention.

Cyrus’ face was grave.

"Sage!" He called out.

Sage looked in Cyrus’s direction and was about to yell out but something interrupted that. She felt something sharp pierce through her back and make its way out of her stomach. The pain she felt as that happened was so excruciating that she could neither scream nor whimper. Her hands were trembling as she brought it to her stomach to touch her already blood-stained clothes. Her eyes lowered slowly out of fear of finding out what had impaled her but she had to look anyway.

It was a sword.

"NO!" Cyrus yelled out in shock.

For the first time, she noticed an emotion in those blue slit eyes of his.

She fell on her knees, trembling.

"Farewell, my dear Sage," a familiar voice said.

She turned her head and saw him, the person she had never imagined.

Tears streamed down her cheeks, her lips trembled, and her heart shattered into a thousand pieces.

"Why, Father?"

She couldn’t believe that the man she grew up with, who cared for her, loved her, and adored her, could be so cruel.

Julius drew the sword harshly without replying, causing Sage to scream in pain.

Cyrus appeared beside Julius at that precise moment, grasping the sword by its steel and pulling his head out of his body with his other hand.

"Fuck it! He is not your father!" Cyrus yelled at her, allowing the head and body to fall to the ground.
